Perfect video for showing how quick a tornado can wedge out. Shows exactly why people need to give the tornado a chance to grow before drawing in so close. You can have a tornado pass safely in front of you, but if it grows into a monster wedge, it can have you for lunch even though it's going away from you. This is where you will hear accounts of tornadoes that turned a 180 and came back and hit someone. Most cases the tornado didn't do a 180, It just grew so fast that it appears to do a 180.
This is some of the best footage out there! I just have one pet peeve though. Storm chasers are always saying, "I'm a hundred yards from it." They're close, but not that close. An athlete can run a hundred yards in about 11 seconds. It's 30 parking spaces. If it doesn't look like you could run into it in about 15 seconds, it's more than 100 yards. It's great footage, no less. Very risky!
To get as close as you did was Amazing! I could not even think about getting that close. With all the technology and Science around nothing beats a chaser getting right up in the action like you. Excellent work!
wow! Im from SW Missouri and was around when a tornado hit Pierce City in May of '03. We watched one funnel turn into three, then join together and thats all she wrote. We chased it long enough to realize that we were right in it's path. We finally got turned around in time for it to cross our path about a 1/4 mile away. I will always remeber how I felt during all that so I just cant' imagine being there for this one ... BREATH TAKING! Thanks for posting, you should get an award for this one.
Both! He was following the rotation ahead of him, and ignoring the rotation on the left, (which was clearly visible in this footage) and he nearly made a grievous error!
Could that have been a satellite of the main wedge tornado? I mean that was scary. One moment you have the twister ahead of you, next thing it’s gone and you have a huge developing wedge behind you, quickly obscured by the RFD.
Ermehferkingerd. Love me some storms but the fact that the wedge sent that stovepipe out as bait to sneak up on you was just foul play then tried to lasso you wth the power lines.. Well played wedge.. Well played lol ;) glad you got close enough for footage and are still ok. Video bookmarked :D
Why are people replying to this comment from 5 years ago is the real question 😂😂 a couple of bad tornadoes this year and now everyone is interested in them. My original comment was obviously a joke and me being dramatic.
kcirred nosrednad rear flow draft its the air that fuels the tornado, typically really strong winds blowing into it from behind but it can really be anywhere.
First, you weren't "hit" by that tornado. Second, unless you knew the road ahead was about to end, it seems your best course of action would've been to drive straight ahead to daylight, in the earlier portion of this video.
He was most definitely hit, even if it was only by the outer circulation of the tornado. This tornado appeared to be traveling to the northeast, which would have cut off any opportunities for him to traverse forwards to escape it.
The roads got really crappy just north of this location. I rolled past the power station you see in this video maybe five minutes later (and having to go around the downed power lines and people getting stuck in the ditch trying to go around the power lines) and the road network turned into a mud pit and ninety-degree turns and down a huge hill into a steep valley. There would have been no way to drive north and escape this thing on muddy roads even in his Jeep. Give me concrete and I'd give it a shot, but I never like being in front of even small tornadoes. Ya can't stop and film. Oh, and he was hit right at the beginning of the wedge coming into view, but was blasted with RFD winds as he rolled to the south of it. I don't like being that close as I like my windows. There were people losing windows back at the power station.
That's a really bad idea. Tornadoes can change their trajectory and their travel speed. If he gunned it and the Tornado suddenly started moving the other direction, it would literally be suicide. It's exactly what happened to Tim Samaras' crew (one of the best and well known storm chasers to date) in the El Reno Tornado. It's a lot safer to turn around when it starts getting too close for comfort then to try and speed forward and out speed it.
+finalfanta15. Not exactly. Tim and his crew CHOSE to OFTEN drive in front of tornadoes to place pods. Sooner, or later, you're gonna pay the price for those actions. Ya just don't purposely pull those stunts on days with 4000-5000 CAPE (explosive growth and sustainability) and 70s dewpoints (potential HP storm mode) and plenty of bulk shear (tearing vortices). Watch Tim's Bowdle video. It's what he did all of the time.
If I could push the like button twice, I would've... That was close, but you kept a cool head, and saved your bacon. That is a great quality for any great adventurer. Majorly awesome!
I think the title should be changed to "Storm Chaser tries to get to close and ALMOST gets hit by a strong to violent tornado", as he was NOT hit by the tornado, cause the video kept rolling and he was still on all 4 tires instead of crumpled and on his side. BACK UP!!! sigh...
Great video. I am confused though. There was a stovepipe tornado in front of you in the white/bright clouds area, it expands and wraps with rain and kind of disappears. Then suddenly way behind you is a giant dark wedge. What happened? Was it 2 different tornadoes or did it go into the rain and then run up behind you and change directions again?
That was super cool. So there was a sneaky wedge behind it? Reminds me of surfing - you catch a good wave, then realize on the paddle back out that the big sister is right behind it about to clobber you. Yikes!
Doug Keisling is a very brave storm chaser. To get as close as he has in this video to a tornado is an amazing accomplishment. Just as cooks and chefs use spices for food flavor, Mr. Kiesling uses profanity to "spice up" his video narrations. Doug, you have a great use of curse words, along with a huge library of videos of your storm chase adventures. Wish I could talk to you in person.
This guy is my freakin' hero. I'm hate to speak ill of other chasers, but I'd take this guy's sparse, understated commentary over Reed Timmer's hysterical ravings any day. Sorry, Reed. I admire you for being in the right place at the right time so often, but when you start freaking out and screaming, I just wanna' slap you like everybody lined up to smack that lady in the movie "Airplane!"
at least you did not get hurt because I saw you got too close and then you backed up which was the smart thing to do. Great job on filming this beastly tornado
Why make that comment? There was no way for him to know that wedge was there, he chased the stove pipe tornado & couldnt have known it was a satelite tornado running next to a huge hidden wedge. He clearly started backing uo when he saw that monster wedge coming from the side. He was a very sharp tool in the shed. Maybe someone else isnt the sharpest tool in the shed?
Great wedge tornado video footage! Despite facing a monster of that size with destructive winds and sizable hail (as well as the fact you were alone)... you seemed to keep your cool. Guess that makes you the 'calm in the storm'. Thanks, bnvn1!
Nice vid! Can't get over how quickly that tornado grew. Good think you backed up to. Do you have a wind sensor? If you did what wind speeds did you catch?
Man! the first tornado started out barely touching down and forming to becoming a good size tornado. Then.... the Huge wedge was coming behind it to swallow him up.
This guy did the right thing though, he backed up and didn't get into a screaming panic like I see in some videos. He didn't get at a rediculous speed that could have put him in a ditch on this road. Nice job backing up calmly and staying focused on the escape from this beast of a tornado. I give this vid 5 stars.
The road appeared wide enough for Doug to turn around and leave the tornado behind. Why didn't he? Not knowing what a WEDGE tornado is begging the question: were there actually two tornadoes and he was enclosed between them?
What? Look, great job hunting and filming seemingly by yourself but how was that a chaser being hit by a wedge? How bout you truthfully title the video "Storm chaser gets close to a wedge" or something that isn't a lie for clicks. No storm chaser was hit and if he was the video cut out before it happened. Be safe out there
@bnvn1 Doug, this cell actually dropped a large cone just south of I70 first. Then lifted until north of town & then dropped your elephant trunk & wedge. We saw the cone lift & chose to wait along I70 for another cell to the south. This later storm dropped Quinter 4 & luckily took a left & went between Quinter & Park to the west. My buddy Colt & I filmed this wedge (which I assume everyone names #2 for wedge 2) entirely from I70. I still come back to this vid! Great stuff man.
Nope, he did not get hit by the tornado; he got hit by the peripheral thunderstorm outflow wind generated by falling very cold precipitation. CLICK BAIT, THUMB DOWN.

When the form of a tornado that's close to you becomes amorphous, and things start to seem rather windy, you've got trouble. From the looks of things, he lucked out in being caught near a large but not brutally strong twister. The RFD appeared to be as strong as the tornado's winds from what I could see of the footage.
I was replying to a comment asking if there were a lot of tornadoes in the Quinter area. I was referring to the fact that it was a single, well documented tornado.

Crazy how that first tornado almost lured you into the path of the wedge and then nearly disappeared as soon as you were almost close enough. Creepy
It's amazing how fast that tornado just grew into a wedge right in front of him from nothing at all.

Dude...you have some stones.
Were you driving on a flat? What were all of the sparks that appeared to be coming from the front driver's side?

Nope, he did not get hit by the tornado; he got hit by the peripheral thunderstorm outflow wind generated by falling very cold precipitation. CLICK BAIT, THUMB DOWN.
