The weirdest thing about the Penix pick is that if you want to take a developmental guy who won’t start for 3 or so years, 21 year old JJ McCarthy was right there.
If the falcons took McCarthy at 8, it wouldn't be that weird because he's young, high upside, and could use 2 years to sit. But Michael Penix is 24, at earliest he'll be 26-27 when he gets on the field unless they think Kirk is going to be injury prone.
So they draft the most injury prone QB we've seen in a decade lol. Falcons masterclass
& if they thought that, why the hell did they pay him?

Absolutely insane draft. Everyone drafting QBs handed over great defense players to teams that the league surely did not want to allow and then the Chiefs surely got their guy. It really is chalked. I imagine that this will go down as an awful class purely because of how many top 15 guys there were
I like your take on Bowers as I feel the same. Bowers, imo, is an elite prospect and as long as the Raiders have a plan for him, he can be ultra-productive

Seems like they are taking a similar approach to the Packers with the Rodgers and Love picks... but it's very different when you're grabbing a developmental QB prospect in the mid 20s as opposed to the top 10. I guess, if Penix becomes an elite QB in 3 years, they'll be happy. Strange decision

The worst part of the Falcons pick is that he’s just not that great of a prospect. Even if they never signed Kirk, taking Penix at 8 is wild, you could’ve had an elite prospect to fill a hole on your win now roster, but you take a low ceiling old injury prone Quarterback?
Penix at 13 to the raiders would have been a fine pick. To the falcons made absolutely no sense

I think the falcons might be thinking that Kirk Cousins is someone who can take them to the playoffs, but not make them a true contender. They prolly think that Penix can develop for 2 years and take them from a playoff team to a true super bowl contender.

I get the initial reaction of shock for the Penix pick, but looking at it now it feels fine to me. Kirk is a large contract, but if the Broncos taught us anything, QB contracts are moveable. And with how many games Kirk wins, they will not be drafting high for a QB until he is gone. So this is a chance to focus on the now with Kirk and the long term future with a QB talent many teams reportedly tried to move into the top 10 to draft. This will be a draft pick that will age well like the Jordan Love pick from a few years ago.

I actually like Penix and rate him highly (mid-late first round talent). The thing that make the pick weird is they already have Cousins.
The Falcons grand plan was probably to take a QB next year, however because of tampering they're convinced that they're going to forfeit next year's 1st (which means they know they're super guilty). So they just went ahead and took the highest QB on their board now. It's like bad on top of bad decision making.

At first I was a little disappointed in the Bowers pick, but ya know the longer I've had to think about it I'm pretty happy with it. For once we took a player that was a consensus top 10 pick, and I'll take that.
As a Saints fan, I couldn't be happier with this round. We got an amazing tackle, and the Falcons got a QB to sit on their bench for the next four years😂. FTF!
As a Washington fan, I’ve watched Michael Penix for the last two years and he’s been great and I’m not surprised he’s a top ten pick but the Falcons picking him is truly baffling

My take. Gutekunst really is going out on a limb. Gute took the #7 OL picked in the 1st Round when he had the options of the Top RB, #2 DT, #2 LB, or #3 Corner (all positions the Packers are looking to pick in this draft). Arguably passed on two better ranked OL in Guyton and Barton. So, he drafted the 9th ranked OL with an injury history on his knee.
I don't know about anyone else but if Morgan isn't a perennial All-Pro then that 25th pick was a massive opportunity missed to get a special player at a position of need.
Odunze was right there. All the best defensive players too.
A first round pick imo should always be on a guy you're planning on starting day 1. 2nd and 3rd round guys are guys who you think would have a legitimate chance to earn a starting position. And 4-7 are the guys who you think you can develop, or you picked them to have a decent backup. There is no reason anyone in their right mind would have picked Penix at 8 after paying Kirk what the Falcons are paying him.

I was shocked at the Pennix pick, at first. But if you consider the real world reasons, it makes plenty of sense. Arthur Smith just got fired because he didn't get a QB. Raheem Morris is an AA Coach who has been fired before. He's not going to get a 3rd chance, and he knows it. Hes making sure he can stack wins now and in the future and in case of injury to t QB.
If that’s the case why would you get the most injury prone qb in the class who is also 24, no long term upside causes he’s old and no standard for consistent play cause he’s injury prone. Absolutely horrific pick when Byron Murphy is on the board and their best dtackle is 37

I think Vikings picking Turner at 17 should be shocking. Not so much that they need him. Rather that he was still there. He was supposed to go to the Falcons at 8 (part of the Penix effect).

Falcons should’ve traded back got value and take a qb in the second round, they messed up my colts board we could’ve trade up with them and got rome or bowers would’ve fell if they took another position like pass rusher, the raiders took bowers cause he was best available and didn’t know what else to do when even they could’ve moved back and got a corner or something
I’m old enough to remember when people cared that their QB was coming off a torn Achilles. One wrong step and this move is genius.

As a Vikings fan, if the falcons took JJ McCarthy at 8 id understand that way more. Very young qb to sit behind cousins. Taking a page out of the packers book. And me personally I really like penix as a prospect and would've been fine with having him over JJ. So if I'm being honest. What if falcons and Vikings end up doing a trade of QB? (Maybe even Vikings getting picks since falcons would most likely be the ones initiating it.) Something like what happened with brees and rivers

Best player available. Also they can coexist on the field at the same time. Bowers is a slot TE like Kittle or Kelce and Mayer is an inline guy like gronk. This is going to create all the mismatches and help the no qb situation
