  • The Nevada Northern Railway Museum has acquired two of its old diesel locomotives are they are moving them on the highway by truck home to Ely!
#201 is the first to be moved, arriving home just a few days ago. #201 is an Alco RSD4, the only surviving Alco RSD4. The museum has a great collection of first-generation diesel locomotives. The Nevada Northern bought almost exclusively Alco, buying only one EMD, an SD7. Which is the other locomotive to be moved home SOON!!!
Moving a 100-ton locomotive by truck 850 miles is no mean feat!! It required using a special lifting rig to hold the locomotive while it traveled at 35 miles per hour for days... CHECK IT OUT!

I just don't know what it is about steam locomotives that gives them that undeniably, magnetic charm. All I know is they've got a real hold on me and I cannot break free of their grip! 0:27. They take me away from traction...for a while anyway. 🙄 I'm not much of a diesel guy, but I am glad everything worked out okay transporting #201 back to it's home track. Diesel locomotives deserve TLC, too. And I love Karyn's quip about bubble wrap! It was funny. 😁😆😅😂🤣

Back in the 1980s I covered, as a photographer for Associate Press, he move of he Nickle Plate 587 steam locomotive from Broad Ripple Park in Indianapolis the the rail line several blocks away. The locomotive and tender were separated then moved with the locomotive rolled onto a massive flatbed trailer with more wheels than a centipede then slowly moved to the rails. The truck maneuvered so that the locomotive was lined up over the rails and backed up to a platform made of stacked railroad ties with rails at the top. The locomotive wan then slowly rolled from the trailer to the platform. With that process done, the next step was to slightly raise one end of the platform so some ties could be removed, allowing the locomotive to be lowered slightly at that end, then repeating the process at the other end. This back and forth went on until dark then resumed early the next morning, until the locomotive was back on the line on which it had run. It was then mated to the tender before a scheduled freight train arrived to push the 587 to the Amtrak shops in Indianapolis where it was rebuilt for service. Several years later I covered the first two excursion runs pulled by 587, one from alongside the tracks, the second from inside the train. The 587 later pulled the Indiana State Fair train from Carmel to Indianapolis multiple times each day for the run of the fair, and I was on several of those runs in my capacity of Indiana State Fair photographer.

+ToyMan *American Locomotive didn't get many orders for the RSD-4, a C'-C' packing an in-house-built two-stroke V-12 Diesel.* General Motors got more orders for the SD-7, a tall-hood C'-C' with a Detroit two-stroke V-16 Diesel, than American for the RSD's. The RSD and SD definitely qualify as oversize loads for the highway.

Awesome stuff. I had no idea there was only one survivor of the RSD4s. I know a few eastern railroads were pretty fond of the RSD4/5, specifically the Jersey Central. I thought for sure there would be a handful left, but I'm sure that's been said before...
Edit: The problematic 244 engine these were equipped with had metallurgy issues with the crankshaft and bearings, it caused the main bearings to go out of round and turn egg shaped... It actually caused the crankshafts to snap in two! Apparently the main generator had issues putting out enough current to supply to the traction motors, too. The RSD-5 remedied that issue and superceded the 4's. Only 36 of them were built. Not hard to see why...

    • @iannarita9816

Minority diesel builders like Alco, Baldwin, Lima, Fairbanks Morse, Porter and others were usually the first to go to trade in during the 60's & 70's, as they were the odd balls.

@@iannarita9816 Yes,its a real shame. They built the interesting stuff. Would be interesting to see what they would be building today if they were still in business... but I swear I remember seeing at least one other Alco RS engine with the six axle trucks in preservation somewhere in the Midwest, but it may have been an RSD5 or something similar to the RSD4.

When the Ely Navada RR wanted their locomotive back from the Northwest RR, the Northwest RR made a deal, if they moved a diesel locomotive that they owned for 20 years down in Seattle. Cool fact about that locomotive, it was one of the first things the Great Northern RR bought in a diesel type of class. But back to #201, they would get the diesel. Because the Navada Northern wanted the locomotive so much they made the deal, sending one locomotive from Seattle to there, and one locomotive from there to Ely.
