The movie kinda sucked ass tho. The movie is a completely different story that simply borrows characters and animatronics while throwing in a few nods to the game. It was entertaining but i was disappointed that they didnt put in the effort to adapt the actual lore.

If you remember back in 2014, Critics hated Scott’s last game and most of the criticism came from the stiff animation and horrendous character models that made it “look like a bootleg 90s Chuck E Cheese animatronics”. I think the problem is that the Fnaf movie isn‘t actually horror but it’s thriller. Horror movies are based more on the spookiness rather than the story (which is why Main Characters are stupid). A thriller is based on the story rather than the spookiness and makes you more exiting. Fnaf is based on the story (the lore) first and than the jumpscares.

What people don't get about the different opinions between critics and fans is that, they don't judge movies by the same standards. Critics see movies as art. Fans see it as entertainment. They're both valid, and that's why they get different scores. A movie can be entertaining while not being anything thought provoking or in any way special
Marvel Movies
So by that logic. Cuties is a masterpiece, and the fnaf movie is complete trash?
Interesting take
@@Very_Silly_Individual you realise RT isn't just 20 critics who watch every movie right? I reckon a lot of critics reasonably didn't watch cuties outright which means they can't critique it, leaving only the creeps to. Its the same reason why Matt Walsh's absolute garbage "documentary" is rated so highly, anyone who didn't want to be involved in what would just be a bigot being bigotted gave it a pass.
@@Very_Silly_IndividualAll you're doing right now is showing your ignorance. Cuties has a grand total of 83 reviews from critics on RT. Theres over 3000 critics on RT. 83 critics is irrelevant and doesnt represent 3000 other people. I doubt, the movie is like 5/10, if you're not a fnaf fan, you most likely won't enjoy it as much.
you finally made a good idea or comment
The Closer Look has a great explanation on how critics work and the flaws inherent in their scores. A casual critic who watches multiple movies a week (because it's their job) would only judge a movie based on what they know. The simplest example would be if a movie based on a game assumes the audience knows the intricate and complex relationship between 2 characters and doesn't waste time rehashing what fans already knows. A critic would see that and immediately come to the conclusion that the death of one of those characters felt lacking because no time was spent making us care about them. Also, even critics have preferences. As I said in the beginning, The Closer Look recommends rather than taking the average of all critics, you narrow it down until you follow a handful of critics who share your tastes. That way, when 3/5 of your favourite reviewers givea movie an 8/10 you can almost be certain you are going to enjoy it. I really recommend you go watch his video. It's the one that uses the Mario movie as a reference and in the thumbnail
the problem with that is that when you make a movie that requires you to do homework, that's not a good movie. The thing people need to remember is that while FNAF has a large fanbase, not all of that fanbase is chronically online enough to know all the lore, and that's not a bad thing. This movie was marketed as an adaptation. You shouldn't have to read the Silmarillion to understand Lord of the Rings. Having most of your audience completely confused because they didn't pour through years worth of lore and speculation is utterly insane and is gonna result in most people having a bad time with it.
I saw this movie with my girlfriend, I loved the games growing up and kept up with most of the lore up to about the fourth installment or so, then sort of grew out of it. She had more of a passing interest but on the newer side since she has younger siblings that played the newer installments and she would occasionally play with them. So we're both fans, but not diehard. She was left completely confused, the plot made no sense to her at all and she left really disappointed. I understood but hated how the movie was laid out. It holds the audience’s hand through all the obvious stuff (they tell and show you at least 6 times that the protagonist's brother got kidnapped when he was a kid) when they could've easily have used that wasted time showing the audience all the stuff they didn't bother to explain. I had to tell my girlfriend who the blonde kid was because they never actually show you. He just says "I'm not Freddy" and the audience is left to just figure it out.
I always follow this philosophy: if critics give it a bad rating and people give it a decent rating, it is worth seeing. If critic's rating is high and people's rating is low, it is definitely not worth seeing
If both are high you need to drop everything and watch it
So you're a contrarian then?
I don't know if I agree, the issue with audience rating with movies like these is that they're typically made up of superfans who are pretty much guaranteed to always enjoy whatever is made no matter the quality. But if you're not one of those, the audience rating means basically nothing.
If critic ratings are high in my view it usually means it's an _interesting_ movie, but obviously it's not guaranteed that a movie that's interesting and original will be something you like. In this sense critics and audiences work in a similar way, they rate for two different things that you may or may not like. Personally I'm not interested in fanbase-targeted movies (unless I'm in the fanbase of course, which is almost never the case) so I tend to be more interested in critic ratings.
@@MagcargoMan A contrarian would be looking at an extremely highly rated film like The Godfather, and feel the need to discredit it. This is just having no faith in critics.

Genuinely, FNAF aside (I'm not an avid fan but had grown up with the franchise so it was still great to see Scott got his movie) I thought the movie was pretty decent at standing on its own two feet and not relying on FNAF lore. I went into the movie thinking it was gonna be bad because that's usually how video game adaptations go but I came out of the movie pretty surprised. Not to say it was a fantastic movie but it definitely wasn't bad at all, and when I see people like Cr1tikal giving it a (in my opinion) harsh 45% I just don't really understand what was so bad about it. I think 7/10 is a very suiting score.
Edit: after a couple days tbh I’m more leaning towards giving it a 6/10 if 5/10 means completely neutral feelings with not leaning in the negative or positive direction at all, but that being said I definitely don’t think the film is as bad as a lot of people say it is at all

This is why I trust the audience score more. And critics gave the Super Mario Movie a low score too, so this isn't surprising. Considering the massive amounts of not only confirmed but unexplored lore, that's impressive
“It was made for the fans” is not a good excuse
I think a movie can be pleasing to fans and also good in it's own right to general audiences, look at across the spiderverse as an example
I saw it in theaters last night, it was a really good vibe despite being chaotic, from my angle it looked like a bunch of young adults (late middle school to highschool age) who were at an event where they weren't the "odd one out". People were making friends in the concession line. It was fun
I can vouch for this. My friends and I are “the weird kids” but at the movie everybody was the weird kids and it was really nice to just kinda be with people like us
My cinema was pretty much entirely of teenagers (12-17 year olds). Glad it shows me I'm not alone in this world who had a childhood like that
I watched the movie yesterday and it was good... I'm not super into the lore, but I love the games... I brought my mom, who'd never even seen the games, and she left the theater having enjoyed the film.. Critics look at cinematography, techniques used, the quality of the acting, how the sfx and sets look, characters, and plot. They've also seen a lot of films, often times dozens every year if not into the hundreds. They judge films on technical merit, rather than just the more surface level things the audience is looking for. Additionally with a film critic, something like 5/10 isn't awful though this depends on the critic.
Also for those bringing up "Cuties" almost no critics reviewed it, most refused to. So the only a handful of critics were responsible for that movie having a high score.
I bring up Mulan (2020) because that one was rated by damn near everyone and that movie didn't deserve a rating past 1/10. It completely destroys the point of Mulan and also it throws a whole bunch of other controversy like the filming location. The first wasn't entirely accurate to history or the culture, but it had charisma and tried it's best, plus it actually HAD Mushu, the best fucking part of the movie. 2020 Mulan takes itself way too seriously and Mulan is a fucking superhuman who's a Mary Sue, i.e, the exact opposite of the original Mulan's character. The worst part was the fact that they also had Eugenics undertones since every woman that wasn't born from a specific family were nothing but baby makers. Also Ghostbusters (2016), genderbending and hamfisting a diverse cast =/= good movie.
@@bootlegspinjutsu9966 Mulan 2020 wasn't adapting the cartoon. It was adapting the folk tale the cartoon was based on. It's essentially an unrelated movie about the same character. Also Mary Sue is a meaningless criticism
The way the critics' score is calculated should be reworked. If some many critics refuse to watch it then that score should reflect it in some way.
@@AmericanbadashhNormally I would say Mary Sue is a really stupid word (especially when describing Rey), but in Mulan 2020's case, it actually makes sense because Mulan literally has super powers and doesn't have to work for anything.
I saw a critic review that said that FNAF had too much plot which is a very odd criticism
I've never watched the movie and probably won't, but it's just worth pointing out that the viewers, who have played the games and watched the videos are gonna be a lot more attached to the movie than a movie critic
The simple fact that a critic doesn't know how to factor that into their review goes to show how much of a shit critic they are
Captain obvious over here stroking his dick
Thats a doubled edged sword though because fans of the original media are normally the ones who are the most critical of the adaptation.

I'm 20 and I loved it. It's the same problem as the Mario movie, where these critics didn't come in expecting a Mario movie, they came in expecting a groundbreaking movie Spiderverse style.
Here, they didn't come expecting for a FNAF movie, they expected a horror movie. For both of these movies, I expected a Mario and FNAF movie. That's what I got, and I loved them.
The fact that they added a Matpat cameo in this shows that this movie speaks to the community.
And honestly, I'm not a very invested fan. I don't know all of the lore, and I didn't read the books. I basically only have the basics of the animatronics, the dead children, William Afton... and I understood the movie perfectly.
They even brought Vanessa from Security Breach, and actually did something closer to what Vanessa was originally supposed to be in the games. You know, being a lot nicer and everything. And I liked that they did this.

Just watched it yesterday and i'll be honest they did a great job catering to the fans by mixing all elements of the franchise into one story and using that to support their fans. After years of waiting it was perfect 😂
It would be interesting to see how this movie ages over the years. I imagine a newer generation that isn't as invested into the franchise would rip it apart.
all my friends that grew up with fnaf expected a horror movie, but it didn't turn out to be. it had sooooo much potential for one of the best horror movies out there, and i believe scott knows just how much power his insanely iconic characters have, its literally on the brains of everyone. so the fact that it turned out to be a generic movie with fnaf in it was kinda underwhelming. it has light humor, simple writing, it's literally a kids movie with fnaf on it. i can't say it's bad, because it isn't. it was an awesome experience to dress as an animatronic bunny and see it on the theater, definitely worth it. but the movie itself, even if not bad, is underwhelming, because of just how much potential it had. literally cannot think of a more influential worldwide spread franchise that could have a movie as nostalgic and deep and scary and hit home as much as the one fnaf could have.
tl;dr: it was just fine. that's the problem.
Honestly, high audience scores next to low critic scores is almost like a badge of honor for media now
I mean idk, there are plenty of examples of modern movies that contradict what you said
Not really. Both audiance and critic scores are meaningless nowadays. They used to mean something.

I saw the movie myself, and I can vouch with the audiences. For fans, such as myself, it was a great movie to watch. I can see why critics may not be into it, you might need to be invested more in the FNAF lore to get it, though, and I am not making this up, my brothers GF saw the film and she liked it despite her not knowing too much about FNAF and it's lore, though I could be wrong there. It's possible critics here are not the target demographic but that's okay. What matters for fans is if they are going to enjoy it, and many, myself included, enjoyed it.

I'm telling you, the critics hate fun, Mario got this same treatment because it was focused on being simple and fun, instead of some deep, gritty story, same thing happened with FNaF
Critics don’t hate fun. Paddington 2 and Bottoms are extremely fun and also critically acclaimed. If you found fun in something critics didn’t, that doesn’t mean they hate fun and only love “deep, gritty stories”. They just didn’t find enjoyment or a good time in something. It’s not that deep and they aren’t a monolith
@@xanderfunk492I am going to represent the op here and say that op probably meant hates fanservices. By definition critics are meant to be impartial and be the voice of the mass, not represent just a single group. Fanservices are an antithesis to that impartiality.

The reason Critics hate it is because it's not for them. It's for people who have been following the franchise for a while and have a relatively decent understanding of the lore. Critics went into this movie expecting your typical slasher or monster horror movie, but FNAF fans went in and (for the most part) got exactly what they paid for

If there's one thing I learned from the release of the Super Mario movie, it's that critics and audiences tend to look for very different things in a movie. Critics seem to want deep and complex stories and characters, while audiences are often content with a fun time. That's not to say either side is objectively right or wrong, simply that they have different definitions for what makes a movie "good."
I don't even think critics want deep complex stories most of the time since there have been many simple movies that have gotten good reception, (captain underpants, peanuts movie, the bad guys). I think they mainly look at the execution of the movie more than how deep it is.
Audiences are content with a fun time, while critics seem to want either deep stories or softcore CP.

Critics have a very different perspective on movies. It is not inherrently worse but in the end just another opinion. And getting mad over opinions is a waste of time.
Also, the critic score of RT works a bit differently. A critic score of 25% does not mean that the average rating of the critics is 25%(unlike audience score) but that 25% of the critics had a review that was more positive than negative. These reviews could all been for example in the intervall of 40%-60% and still come to a critic score of 25% because it does not show the average score.
