Art was awesome. No lie, 10 years ago I got to spend some time with Nick Searcy. They were just about to start shooting the last season of Justified, and Nick had done a documentary for the organization I worked for. After the premiere in LA, we spent a couple hours at the bar. (He likes Dos Equis.) He’s an awful lot like Art Mullen. Just a Southern dude. He went to UNC his freshman year & tried out for the freshman basketball team, coached at the time by Roy Williams. He wasn’t quite good enough, but Roy encouraged him to try to walk on the next year. Nick said, “I think I want to go to NY & study acting.” So he did. Just a very cool, down to earth guy.
That’s cool to hear. It’s not surprising. He just has the presence/aura about him that feels like he’s not even acting, like Art is actually him in real life. He is my 3rd favorite character in the show behind Raylan and Boyd!
Art was the person who tried very hard to uphold the sanctity of his office…he was painfully aware of the shortcomings of his deputies; Rachel wanting validation, Tim’s military baggage… …and Raylan’s recklessness. Art was Raylan’s reminder of when he KNEW he was crossing the line between marshal and vigilante…but Raylan was also Art’s reminder that criminals don’t adhere to common decency; and that Raylan’s way of doing things was sometimes effective. The fact that Art was more of a father-figure to Raylan than Arlo was also suggested. What was that quote from Art again…? “Raylan, you’re a lousy marshal; but a great lawman.”
Searcy's acting here is excellent. He gets more and more angry as he spells out the criminal's activity and its ramifications. His voice keys up and even gets a bit of a tremor in it. He doesn't like what he's doing.... but there's a reason for it. This show was on a level above and beyond.
This was why I loved Art. He did everything in his power to follow the book whenever it was feasible to do so, and encouraged Raylan and the others to do so as well. But when it came down to it and innocent lives were at stake, Art could be absolutely ruthless.
I just finished re-watching the whole series, and concluded that Art is the older version of Deputy Tim Gutterson. It’s the understated sarcasm, I think.
Not really. Art was nearing retirement already. And Primeval takes place over a decade later. It would have made even less sense for him to still be active in the marshal's service.
This side of Art makes you realize he was similar to Raylan in his younger years, before he became chief and all. I can see him being very machiavellian about the job. The end justifies the means sort of way. However, he probably didn’t have the same level of personal drama as Raylan. Also, he knew when to turn it on and off. Lastly, it probably helps that he met his wife and they stuck together to help calm him down. Now art just wants to be the dad Raylan never had because Arlo was a giant POS 😂
While this scene highlights the similarities between Raylan and Art, it also highlights the differences between them. Far too often, Raylan resorts to violence and intimidation for personal reasons--often to avenge a grudge or a wrongdoing towards someone close to him. Art is kind of doing that here, given his personal connection to the cop that this thug tortured and murdered. But Art is also enraged at the harm that would be done to people under his protection. It doesn't necessarily make him "better" than Raylan, but it shows that his line is different, and further out, than Raylan's, who finds himself at the mercy of his own impulses a lot more than Art does.

Meeting next thursday, I envy you,Sir. He is definitely an underrated actor, and he needs more credit for his work.

That show was full of heros, but Art was one of the best.

Absolutely. Justified is one of them shows I can watch over and over again just for the love and appreciation of the characters!
God damn, Art, didn't realize you were such a badass.
You even made Bill Guarnere piss himself.
Yeah, too bad after whacking Phil, and Tony getting shot at Holstens, Walden decided to join Witness Protection.
@@matthewriley7826Walden! What kind of name is that for an Italian?

No matter who you are, everybody has their limits.
I loved this version of Art.
Yep, just a reminder why he’s earned his stripes in the first place.
"We were using the new book....now we're using the old one" I already knew where art was headed after that
You think in his younger years Art was a version 1 of Raylan?
Not quite as angry, maybe.
Probably why he gets so exasperated with his antics.
Art was cooler, maybe a little less deadly.
I just finished re-watching the whole series, and concluded that Art is the older version of Deputy Tim Gutterson. It’s the understated sarcasm, I think.
Art does say something along the lines that Raylan was his punishment for the stuff he pulled when his Chief was around
I liked Justifed so much I bought the whole set . Awesome cast and story , had of course Raglan’s shoot outs .
He is a really good actor.
The fact that Art Mullen was not written in the new Primeval series was the first sign that it sucked.

Maybe he’ll show up now that Boyd has been confirmed.
Yeah I was pretty annoyed that they didn't bring back anyone. I was really hoping Tim would make an appearance.
"I dont know, marshall. I seem to be a bit foggy, right now. Maybe you could help me jog my memor-ACK!"
Second to Raylin, my most favorite character, Art. Art is the MAN!

I missed that in the show...

Bill. Guarnere turned bad
Could have ran the clip for another minute or two!🤔😑
Beating up a wounded war hero. Not very nice Art. 😂

Start talking or bye bye
