"you cant drift a train. it follows tracks so it turns specifically. Furthermore if it WAS slippery it wont turn enough!" enginer: hold my beer, play my eurobeat.
I mean... add to the fact that when they speed up and pull brakes, they steer with the actual weight of the wagons that are flailing behind, as brakes affect the locomotive but not the wagons. When they press brake, the wagons keep going the same force the certain direction, therefore the locomotive starts to turn the other way, just the same as the very first time they pulled the brakes and did the spin before backing away from the cracking ice. The fact they managed to pull off this steering, keep steady speed so they wont drown it, and manage to time the angling perfectly to land on the rails and not a single frame aside that would crash it means those guys either do this often, or they already knew how to drift before taking this job. I wonder how the interview went... "What are your skills?" "I know how to drift a car." "YOURE HIRED!"
I remember this movie being kinda forgettable for the most part, but when this scene popped up, I don't think ive seen a movie jump to a 10/10 this quickly.
It's really the 32 minutes in between the arrival at the north pole and the first gift being inaugurated that feels like it was just added to extend screen time
They made the engineer look so stupid in this movie. But then they show he is capable of drifting a 60 ton steam powered locomotive like an absolute legend.
If something goes deep into thick ice it will crack, but if something heavy rests on it it won't as that ice has a larger mass than smaller ice. Physics couldn't be simpler.
I feel sorry for the maintenance crew when that locomotive pulls up to the round house... that locomotive most likely will fall apart from all the abuse to its drive train and pistons..

When it goes down the big drop it reminds me of those arcade rides where you lay down and then the ride makes affects which make you feel like your falling

Not to mention that a pin cracked the ice, but a 100 ton locomotive didnt.

Holy hell, never seen this movie before but this scene has to be one of the greatest things I've ever seen.
