Though this does look like an amazing tradition, I must wonder if anyone was seriously harmed in this? Thank you for sharing this with us ♥

+Just Breathe It is an amazing spectacle but also an extremely dangerous one. Serious injuries and deaths do unfortunately occur. Hai

This reminds me of the sand worm riding in "Dune"...

I had the same thought looking at those dudes sitting astride of the log, holding on to the rope reminded of fremen on top of the worm :D
I love old traditions like this deeply rooted into local culture and religion. I hope it endures 1200 years more.

Looks like they're in diff colors/teams--- is there a winner somehow at the end?

+Bangkok Fatty There are different groups but no competition. From what we gathered, the coloured tops were more to differentiate the various roles. For example log riders, log pullers, crowd controllers, flag bearers etc. Hai.

Every 6 years?? Geez. I wasn't expecting that. Japanese festivals are so much fun...this one seems a little dangerous though lol.

+Travel Lushes Japanese festivals are indeed fun, both to see and participate in but we were more than happy to just observe this one ;) Hai.

That was interesting! Looks a bit scary though. For example the log might roll over you when you did fall on the ground. Does it happen, I mean people get hurt or injured? Anyway loved the last part of the video most :) Cheers!

+Riaz Uddin Certainly is one of the more death defying festivals we've ever attended and injuries are a given. In fact, we did see someone stretchered off to the large "Disaster Rescue" bus parked at the base of the hill. The medics didn't look particularly rushed so we guess it wasn't particularly serious. Hai.
