Hello I am French I love your videos I have been following you for a little over a year and I wanted to congratulate you on your new boat and new equipment you have really worked hard and that is
Awesome work there Gents. I'm impressed with how you have both adapted to the new boat and it shows in your "time & motion" actions. You have your system working and are clearly thinking about how to increase your efficiencies going forward. That was a great haul for a new spot and I hope that you get many more going forward. Yes, surprisingly, very few improvements to make. I guess we had a good idea on what was needed from the Fish Tale setup. Happy that it's all working great!
@@EISAlaska You referenced in the vid that you were thinking of putting something there to stop the fish hauled aboard going all the way to the port side. 1 vertical board mounted on U brackets that could slip over & between the existing floor boards(perhaps with an L shape on the starboard side -to grip and assist it in not falling over as the fish hit it) easy to make, put in place and also store when not in use. Anyways just a random thought.... I always enjoy your content (and you have probably already got this sorted) All the best.
Yeah I think at least a bin board would be beneficial up forward. It's a good idea, though! That'll be a next season project, I think. We sure appreciate you commenting!

Wow you guys really got on the halibut 😊 I wouldn't call it a jag but a nice haul. Is this the new hot spot😊. Great work guys and they are all nice sized as well.
Hey Guys, I love your content. I noticed since you have been on the new boat you have been using "The Ole' Headache" to put the halibut into a more manageable state. Is this a new technique or did you just not show it on previous videos. I'm not judging, I'm just Curious. Regards, Don in Voorhees, NJ
Thanks Don. Yeah, new technique. Just trying to dispatch the halibut quicker and prevent so much thrashing about, but not really happy with the results as it feels a little barbaric. Already swiched to a brain spike.
Great video guys. Good to see you catching Hali’s. I am loving the EI and I know you are as well. Matt where is your new hat. Hopefully it did not go overboard like the other ones.
The chickens are the best eating,45lbs are tasty, grew up on Kodiak as my dad opened the airport in 1967,I fished halibut, all kinds of salmon and crab, even bering sea on M/V Patria Lee 1 king crab season.Got stationed 2 times in USCG as I joined at 23.
Ahh, great way to wake up to another awesome episode of fishing! And what a grand day it is! Keep safe out there on the waters our friends ! What a great future we have and pray your business is blessed beyond measure! Small business is the backbone of America 🇺🇸
When I was young enough to scuba dive, we would dive around Monterey California and certain times of the year we would come across halibut laying in the sandy areas of the bay. They had really big teeth, do these halibut that you are catching have the same? We were allowed to spear 3 fish per day and Fish and Game was always on the beach waiting for us.
Oh just a idea i used to have just the head of a spoon on a elastip band atached to my hand so after i cut the blood line all i had to do was scrape it out it saved me a step and made it just a little faster lol
Good trick! We usually like to slap 4 or 5 on the table if they are mellowed down. You can kind of assembly line them that way, not needing to set your knife down and pick the spoon up in between fish.
Well its kind of a trial thing, we never have in the past, space limitations on the Fish Tale is a big reason. But also I was nervous about them being in a bin next to the rail now. Turns out they are probably fine just to bleed out normally. Honestly it kinda just feels brutal, so we have a couple trips using the halibat (I laughed at that name by the way 😂), and then we might try a brain spike. Reason for it is to reduce the thrashing around. But we’ll just see as we go on.
@EISAlaska You guys already do enough work to wear out any worker. I can understand how swinging the halibat could increase the workload. Keep the videos coming.
Really enjoy going along with you guys while you work in crazy conditions, doing what you do, but, one request, could you aim the camera up a bit, so we can see the landscape and watch you work? Be safe.
Absolutely! Love to get feedback. This is kind of the learning process again, pretty much going through the different positions for the camera and seeing how they look in edit later on.
Would it be possible to do Long Line Halibut fishing like Trotline Crabbing having the line come up, unhook, rebait and drop for more or is the fishing such that once an area is fished the Halibut are no longer plentiful in that area and you need to fish other grounds?
It's easier just to haul it back, and reset it. If fishing is poor on a portion of the set we don't worry about it. Halibut can get fished out of a spot, with a set like this one it could be beneficial to set back, but we'd only get a fraction of the previous time, probably half to a quarter.
Great video, quick question… why do you (when shooting the line out) alternate the crimps on the line between a forward and then a backward grip? Is it just habit or is there a reason as to why?
Nice observation! Its actually completely random. I put the hook into the tube and pull the gangion through my hand until the snap ends up in my grasp, then whichever way it’s oriented is the way I snap it to the line.
Nah, its a valid question! You could use them for bait, but we prefer not to. Lots of work to process them and they are a pain to deal with. They dull our bait knives and also the skin is almost TOO thick... its hard to bait and hard to remove old bait.
@@EISAlaska Thanks guy's for the answer. I'm a love of Cod (I believe it's delicious) and would rather eat it than use it for bait. By the way the Emerald isle is awesome great job! And now she's bloody! LOL

Seems to be the general consensus, lol. It was a trial for a couple sets this day and we decided shortly after to change over to a different method of dispatching the halibut.

Does whacking them on the head stop the heart any sooner if it does, there’s no point in bleeding them.
The processing area will be pretty easy to keep clean, that's the most important part. As for the rest of the decking, it stays pretty clean and we plan to pressure wash it regularly. The heart will keep pumping the blood out after bleeding, even after the fish is knocked out. We decided to not continue with that method though, its a bit much and also kind of exhausting. We do want to keep incapacitating them though, that'll keep the halibut from thrashing and breaking stuff, and us, so we'll try the Ike Jime (brain spike) method.

Question, When you cut bait, can you use the arms from starfish as bait, seeing that they seem dominate at times in those waters?
Nah, the only things that eat starfish are king crab and unfortunately we don't have many of those here.

Trying to dispatch our halibut quicker, but not happy with the results. We already swiched to a brainspike and that works great.
Have you considered mounting some magnets to hold/store knifes etc ?
Good morning. This the first time I seen you club the fish. Doesn't that affect the bleeding out of the fish? Just wondering.
It doesn’t effect the bleed, but it does incapacitate them, stopping from thrashing about.

Thanks gary! Always appreciate the feedback.
It’s not practical for the amount of gear you put out but we’ve had success putting a float at the hook to the bait off the bottom . Some times a rattling float. It might be interesting to see what a few floating baits would do
I have been thinking about the same thing for awhile now. Going to make up some test prototypes and see how they work in the shallows.
@ it’s actually a catfish rig but I used them successfully on cobia . It can be as simple a a clip on float or what’s called a demon dragon. A simple cheap solution for you might be a pool noodle or plumbing pipe insulation
How often do you sharpen your hooks
Only when we find a damaged or broken tip. They stay sharp for a long time with good care.
You gotta have a stove on the new boat when you just cut some delicious cod fillets!
For sure! We plan to do some fish dinners out on the water.
Are you going to add trawlers?
Why not reset in the same good spot?

Does herring is better than cod, or opposite
It's about even I suppose. Herring puts out a stronger scent I think, cod stays on the hook a lot longer. So I guess there is a trade off.
Is there any par of skate edible
The wings are apparently similar to scallops.
Isn’t it more convenient to use an electrical zapper to stun the fish than the bat?
I tried the bat method for a couple trips, its a bit exerting so I might discontinue it. It was more of a trial thing.
If the market demands it, do you guys ever retain skates?
We did years ago when bycatch allowance was higher, used to be 20% long nose and big skate, now is only 5% of both so its no longer worth it to bother with.
Why the club?
Stuns them so they are easier to handle.
