Destruction Derby 2 has one of the most chilling main menu themes ever for the PlayStation. It makes your spine tingle, it makes you feel a sense of fear that might be the last thing you can even feel. You're in a vulnerable, dangerous place, afraid that your life would flash before your eyes. I love it. Also, love how you acknowledged Split/Second
That Destruction Derby 2 menu theme scared the hell out of me as a kid. Made me rush through the menus in pure panic. You know a metal soundtrack is good when it makes kids scared of a menu.
This is without a doubt the best destruction derby retrospective video I’ve seen on RUclips. Top work mate! 10/10 I hope you do the same for WipEout one day.
I just gotta say that I love how you structured this video in a way similar to a video essay yet still are staying true to what makes your content what it is and keeping you personality intact. It's hard to explain really but it's just nice that you're able to find a middle ground of keeping the homey, down-to-earth editing style and presentation while presenting the information in a much more formatted way, it's truly awesome to see. As for Destruction Derby type games, I was never really huge into them. The only one I've played was Flat Out and while it was fun, it's just not a genre of game that I particularly got into. That said, it was fun watching you give a brief history lesson about these kinda games. Nicely done :)
The first one I played in the series was Destruction Derby Raw, which became one of my favourite racing games for PS1 growing up, however back in March when my mum's best friend passed away 2 games were left behind for me that I didn't even know he had in his collection, Destruction Derby 1 Black Label, and a copy of Destruction Derby 2 for PC, another good video as always dude and these full retrospective video's are dope looking forward to more in the future.
Dude, yes. I love this. Two of my best friends growing up had Destruction Derby Arenas and I have so many fond memories of playing that game all day and night with them.
Great Video Jak - DD Arenas was first Ps2 Game I purchased by myself in the Age of 10. We had so much fun in multiplayer and upgrading all of the cars. But well... it didn't age very good. But the nostalgic memories will never fade. Thanks for the Video, greetings from germany.
Wow. I had completely forgot about Test Drive: Eve Of Destruction until now. I played a crazy amount of hours of that game back in the day & remember absolutely loving it. I was about to go buy it on eBay, but it's a bit more expensive then what I want to pay haha. Definitely going to be keeping my eyes peeled for it when I am out game chasing!
Epic Retrospective Jak, I still recall my father renting the first game back in the days and getting absolutely creamed in the arena mode to the point where I wasn't sure what I was supposed to find fun with it. And after all these years, destruction style racing games ended becoming some of my favorites of all time. Especially when they add a twist to it like Split/Second does or even Full Auto.
I'm not really into these type of games, but I still enjoyed watching this and I appreciate all the work you put into it. It definitely shows. Thanks. It's fun seeing and learning about games I'm not too familiar with.
Great video!! I grew up loving the Destruction Derby series. I always rented the second one. Now at the age of 33, I am still enjoying games like Wreckfest or Test Drive Eve of Destruction!
I spent endless hours on Destruction Derby 64 multiplayer with my middle school friends. I unlocked the ambulance and it was OP as hell. I also had DD RAW and loved it, especially the skyscraper stage.
I remember buying Destruction Derby 64 from Game Crazy roughly 20 years ago and playing it religiously. I ended up unlocking every car and track... thanks for bringing back my childhood.
YES! i have been playing through the flatout games recently. Absolutely love this genre. Thanks for the in-depth knowledge and look into a forgotten side of racing games.
Destruction Derby Raw will always be one of my favourite games. I still remember getting it for my 6th Birthday. Got to play it for 30 mins and didn't want to go to school lmao. Excellent video mate, love the format. Can tell you really worked hard!
hell yeah dude, great vid. a topic that's right up your alley and one i see seldom discussed. also loving the new set/back drop/filming location/whatever you would call it. keep up the great work Jak-bro hope all is well!
btw for those who dont know, DD2´s CD also functions as a Music CD as there are all the soundtracks of the Game on it waiting to be played on a audio system ^^
I’m so happy you played Driven to Destruction. I consider myself a racing game enthusiast and its my favorite game of all time. Theres just so much to do. My only complaint is the sound is fairly mediocre like other games from Monster Games (who are responsible for the NASCAR Heat franchise) and maybe poor damage compared to Flatout. Just a super unique single player experience and a blast with friends. One of the only games my non-racing game friends wanted to play often. 4/10 hurts my childhood but that’s the beauty of opinions I guess. :)
Might have been a region difference, but the US version of DD2 DID actually still have system link, though it was sort of weirdly hidden. I played that game soooooo much when I was little.
@@SquareEyedJak Honestly, I'm coming back to say I'm not sure if I trust my own memory at this stage, as I went looking for it again tonight, and just couldn't find it to save my life. I wanna say it was hidden on some weird back end of one of the data/replay management pages, and it was probably just a way of sharing record data or something, but either way, this is the internet, and I'm not gonna ask to be believed until I can find it again and capture it. lol
I decided to watch this and see if you did any reviews on other similar games, was not disappointed at all, you helped me find out the name of a 20+ year old game! That being demolition racer! Thank you, now I can try and find a copy
Driven to Destruction (which I believe was called Test Drive: Eve of Destruction in the US) is easily my favourite Derby game because of how grounded it is in real US DDerby type racing
I just got to the point of the video where you bring it up and you're absolutely spot on about it hahah, it's a ten in my heart for how involved it is vs all the others which are just arcade games
This video is so good, I can totally see myself putting this video on in the background as something to listen or fall asleep to. One of your best videos so far! Hope it wasn't too taxing to make a video this long, because judging by the comments I think a lot of people like this format too! and I better not see a single goddamn person get pissy over a simple "my boyfriend and I" line. Happy for you!
Destruction Derby 64 was one of my favorite games of that console. Destruction Junction was my go to stage for the music and atmosphere. I miss that game. 🤩
OMG this is the first time I've ever seen that road blockage on Chalk Canyon mentioned anywhere else, I used to love it when that happened! As for the first game, I happen to love the soundtrack but that may be because it takes me right back to my teenage years
This video was full of content and I love it. The only game I've played in the Destruction Derby series was the first one, and it was only a demo. If I ever want my vehicular destruction fix I'll just play Burnout 3, Revenge or Paradise. Now when you mentioned FlatOut, I knew it was leading up to Wreckfest. I haven't played Wreckfest but I remember watching Jackspeticeye play it when it was called "Next Car Game". Also I do need to try out the first 2 FlatOut games. Not touching the 3rd FlatOut game cause I've seen how bad that is. It's even one of the worst reviewed games on Steam. I would recommend watching Rerez's video on FlatOut 3 just to see how bad it is. Just want to end this by saying I hope you and your partner will be very happy together for years to come. Glad to see you in such a positive mood.
Driven to destruction was one of my favourite games! Another inspired game I'm surprised wasn't mentioned was Crash 'n' Burn for the PS2/Xbox. The racing felt a bit slow but the various game modes were pretty fun, quite like Driven to destruction.
I played the N64 one several times through. It is just so much fun. And it was the only one I knew about for years. Then saw RUclips videos of the first few and was disappointed with how different it was.
This guy is the Minty Comedic Arts of gaming (coincidentally, both are aussies), can't believe i've been watching this guy since the 2nd edition of TonyHawktober, the channel's now improving and it's great!
Hey SEJ, glad you've got a new place for both a creative and living point of view. Been watching since 2016 I think. Enjoy the videos like this the most. Anyway, gonna go try out Wreckfest now when I renew my PS Plus sub.
At first, it looked as though demolition derby style games were one dimensional and lacked depth, but as the years went on, the genre would have unique twists that make it more engaging. And let's be real, demolition derby games are those kind of games where you just want some good, mindless, old fashioned fun.
I have fond memories of the ps1 Destruction derby games but I have to admit its almost 100% nostalgia from a time I didn't know better. I should really pick up Wreckfest.
Test Drive Eve of Destruction is pretty nostalgic for me. Not sure if I ever actually owned it but I remember renting it a few times. I spent a lot of time on the red rover mode, haha. The soundtrack was pretty good too. Flatout 2 was also a lot of fun with friends
I played FlatOut Head On on the PSP and loved it, bought FlatOut Ultimate Carnage on 360 and loved it, got all of them on PC, did not know Wreckfest was from the same team, I'll play more of it.
Driven to Destruction is the DD4 WE NEEDED. Also Theres one you missed, a very rare USA only ps3 game called: Mayhem 3D. Think Destruction derby but its a comic book.
Ahh, Reflections. When I hear that name the first thing that comes to mind is the _Driver_ series. I loved it so much that when I saw both _Driver 1_ and _Destruction Derby_ were both available for download on the PlayStation Store, I couldn't say no! You plan on reviewing _Driver_ too?

awesome video m8. I put Wreckfest on my wishlist but goddamit i was waiting if motorstorm comes up and ya had to skip it xD. Would really love to see your review about it.
That was nice of you to share some personal information about yourself. Appreciate the time and effort you put into the content.
Agreed
I heard it too!
Yeah a bit too sharing... We get it he's a bottom who pretends to be a top.

DD2's soundtrack was fucking phenomenal
well..... the Jug tracks were. Tuscan left a lot to be desired (AKA their drummer sucked)
I loved the menu theme.
It is the same music that plays when the Grim Reaper himself ascends into our world.
For anyone who hasn't played it yet: if you love these kind of games, play Wreckfest!
I played it on game pass and it's the true modern day destruction derby. Heck alot of fun! Jak will love it!
I absolutely agree. Wreckfest is one of my favorite games. It is so dang fun.
Yesss Wreckfest is great in both the single player & multiplayer modes. They did an absolutely excellent job with it!
Especially with a racing wheel
@@McShizzle The arena mode is pure madness with a wheel

Destruction derby 2 was one of the games I fucking loved as a kid along with vigilante 8, man those arena parts took me back
Great video ! I wish you will make a Flatout retrospective too :)
Never heard of DD4, it's nice to hear about old games that I would love.
I know Motorstorm isnt a Derby game but its destruction is amazing and lets you admire the absolute demolishing of every vehicle every time you crash.
