I was delighted to hear Mr Bryson voice his bafflement at the use of the term ‘Commencement’ used in the American sense of a Graduation ceremony. I had come to the conclusion, over many years of watching on RUclips a succession of wonderful speakers at such occasions, that it reflects a delightful, and perhaps naïve American lens of ‘looking forward’, as opposed to a more British (&Australian, in my case) view of, ‘well, thank god THAT’S finished, and this graduation ceremony that I have to sit through, is my final punishment’. I would watch Bill Bryson read a telephone book (if they still existed). He has am amazing capacity to make one feel both contentedly happy, while simultaneously enthusiastically excited about what may come round the corner of life next. A long life to you, Mr Bryson.
