17:40 "I don't know" The scene is Sophia realizing he's doing the EXACT SAME THING her father did to her, and in a quick panic, tries to talk to the girl like she's talking to her younger self: 'they were all bad men and when you get out of here...."
It's the whole theme of Gotham as a city: It's an ouroboros of suffering.

I can't decide if I believe that Oz knew his brothers would die in the tunnels or if he just wanted to keep them away for a while so he could get some alone time with his mom. Like was he being a stupid kid who wasn't thinking about the consequences or was he actively malicious and trying to get rid of his brothers? The way his mom describes him and thinking two steps ahead of everyone would certainly imply the latter, but was that something he already had as a kid? I'm torn like I said

@@restlessoblivion I think the way they keep doing these shots where he looks out the window, the camera shifts to a scene of his brother or a jar full of water with toys floating in them, and then they cut back to Oz and he looks away and goes back to watching TV is really symbolically loaded. I feel like they are implying that Oz is aware of what is probably happening, and choosing to not do anything about it bc now his mom is only paying attention to him.

When I saw the title 'Top Hat' weeks ago, my first thought was that Rex's outfit resembles how the Penguin is depicted in the comics, which could inspire Oz to adopt a similar style, as Rex is his childhood hero. But I love the idea of Fred Astaire influencing Oz's fashion instead. Although the flashback is likely set in 1988, the Monroe has a timeless 1940s vibe, reminiscent of The Great Gatsby. I can picture Oz transforming it into his own iceberg lounge, complete with a top hat and a classic 1940s aesthetic, setting up it's appearance in The Batman 2.

Like you said, everything is on the table now in front of us. Both Oz and Sophia have shed their masks and we know more about who they are at the core. And we also see them assembling their new persona, their new mask (and interesting parallel to Bruce/Batman). I suspect that Oz might try something new as well, break out of the old pattern that Sophia was in as well. I wouldn't be surprised if Oz kills his mother at the end. She did ask him to do that earlier. It would deny Sophis her power over him and complete Oz's transformation into the Penguin.

👩🏾‍💻👩🏾‍💻 I think Oz Mom knows that he offed his Brothers, it may only be subconsciously but she knows!!
The other thing, I think once his Mom comes to grip with them using her against Oz she's going to remind him of his promise to end her and I think Rex was Oz Father. He kinda figured that out while he was young (or at least he knew he and his Brothers didn't have the same Father) and maybe thought that's why his Mother "favored" them more.

This episode was the ULTIMATE penultimate episode! What I gathered from this episode was how the main characters ( Oz , Sophia , Francis ) come face to face for their actions and how each one deals with it...Oz' realization that his actions with his brothers only seemed to resonate after the fact...I think the show WANTED us to ask ourselves..did he kill his brothers by accident or on purpose...Sophia realization of what she is doing to her niece is EXACTLY what her family did to her and she is disgusted by it...Francis is forced to realize that she raised a monster and she in not only okay with it but feels like she is OWED Oz' attention and idolization BECAUSE ...she knowwwwwws Oz had something to do with his brothers disappearance and when she tells Oz this in the finale...it will crush Oz knowing that he hurt her by doing this...Sophia gets what she wants in making Oz suffer!!!...Oz makes good on his promise to kill Francis and I think Vic comes back and helps kill Sophia

Sharp and smart, with ability to see Oz just as what and who he is: a narcissistic psychopath, pathological liar, and a cold blooded evil who will do anything to get what he wants. A pure and total EVIL villain. He may look complicated and layered, but he's just simply an evil, with a sweet tongue that can easily turns words around.

I want Sofia to take him out in the final episode, I think he's trying to manipulate her and basically sees her a a puppet of sorts and he thinks that he's going to use her to take control of Gotham or some shit. The show runner said that when he shut the door, he wasn't trying to kill them, he was just acting impulsively and out of frustration, because he believed they were trying to mess with him by going somewhere he couldn't reach. He really did believe they would still be able to get out. However, Lauren then said that when he's at home with his Mom, and they still haven't come home, he realizes how nice it feels to have her all to himself and intentionally chooses not say anything, knowing they're in danger with the high amounts of rain. So in short, yes he absolutely intended it by the end, the sadistic little fuck

He probably didn’t know that it would kill them, and as an insecure man myself, I completely understand where he’s coming from. But it was fucked up. Sofia remains the star of the show for me. After sleeping on it some, I’ve kind of come to the realization that I *really* dislike this episode, to the point where it might have ruined the whole show for me. And the first six episodes of this show are among the best comic book content I’ve ever seen. But the whole show was balancing on the blade of a knife, keeping us rooting for both Oz and Sofia and hoping there can be a way for them both to win even though we know better…but the cold open in this show made it impossible (for me, at least) to ever root for Penguin in any capacity, for any reason, and I think that was a disastrous decision for this show. It’s also the first overtly “HBO” thing the show has done, where someone (maybe a writer, but I always assume it’s an HBO exec) saying “what’s the most shocking, dramatic thing we can do? Doesn’t have to be good or make sense, just be shocking.” I *hate* hbo shows because they almost *always* do that somewhere. I thought this show was going to avoid it, but they didn’t. And now the crucial knife’s edge balancing of the show that was so important has been ruined, in my opinion. To the point where if Oz comes out on top now, *in his own show* , I’m going to be disappointed. That seems like a terrible decision, to me, on their part.
Also, there was so much head-scratching stuff in this ep. Basically everything Sal Marone did was stupid, the writing felt lazy, the thing they tried to do making his death feel ironically unfulfilling fell flat and only achieved “regular unfulfilling” status despite excellent performances from Clancy and Farrell.
I dunno. I am extremely disappointed with this ep. I hope ep 8 is better.

Definitely on the weaker end of episodes for me as well but I would not say it ruins the show for me. We always knew Oz is a monster and this episode gave us the origin of his evil. I also enjoyed Sals death being ironic cause Oz is the sleezy rat that would get that lucky and not get the glory of winning a fight. It feels very in character for him but I understand it feeling disappointing for Clancy’s character to end like this. Also of course Sal was being stupid when he had Oz (the murderer of his family) in his hands. He was fueled by rage and all he wanted to do was kill Oz every second he had him, no thinking in that vengeful head. All in all I’m excited for the finale, hope they stick the landing in this wildly impressive first season

@@KKarkatVantas Rooting for someone isn’t saying you like them or think they’re good. The most compelling villains have motivations that make sense and are relatable, *even if* they’re obviously bad. This show *had* that with Oz…and then threw it away.
To preserve the balancing act it carefully constructed for six episodes (where *everyone is a villainous person doing monstrous things but you’re still rooting for both sides and are therefore delightfully conflicted* and all that) *alllllll* the show had to do was preserve that balancing act a little longer. Instead, they took a swan dive off the blade into the water below, because “ehrmegherd muh shocks.” It’s piss poor, and the otherwise incredible show/cast/characters deserved better.
