Thank you so much. I began listening around the Bay of Pigs time. Chassis from a 1946 8 tube Philco AM/SW/78 rpm record player console (No FM in those days...) Found at a St. Pet auction, late 1950s Was eaten by Termites, so my Dad gave the insides to me We burned the rest. I ran 65 ft of telephone open wire up our pine tree! Used a Model A spark plug as an arrestor Opened a world of BBC Radio Nederlands D-W VOA RFE Etc. First of a string of SW radios An S-40a T-O 7001 Grundig And DX 390s Now nearly new Sangean ATS-818 and 818CS From on eBay... $36 and $42... Plus SDR radio online! STAY INFORMED! Live Free or DIE! @@UCLAfilm01 Yes and now the Taliban has banned VOA in Afghanistan... They need shortwave more than ever. But no...the voice of reason knows better. While our enemies the Chinese dominate the bands with RCI spinning lies and stirring up trouble.
Looks like an RCA control desk. Willis Conover and 'Music USA' always stays in my mind from my teenage short wave listening days. He introduced me to some fine musical artists. I'm sad that we are loosing touch with the analogue world. There is everything you want on the Internet, but it's not the same as listening on good old short wave and AM radio via you're own stand alone radio set.
My Dad worked at the station featured in some of the visuals and I remember hearing some of those broadcasts when I would visit him at work. Thank you for the nostalgia!
RUclips's algorithm showed this in my feed, so I'll comment. I lived in Selebi-Pikwe, Botswana from the late 1980s to the first half of the 90s and listened to the VOA both on SW, and MW (on 621 kHz). I used to listen to the Jazz Hour...It's time for Jazz (good ol' Willis Conover)...Communications World was another favourite. I used Yankee Doodle to get me up every morning at 05h00 and listen to the news over a cup of coffee. Good times! God bless all of those who worked there and I hope (if they're still around) they're all well.
When I hear this interval signal...I missed years 1980s - 1990s, times when I was a teenager, busy with my father's shortwave receiver, trying to get free information about language and culture of other countries. It was a happy and peaceful moment although there was no Internet at that time
God bless the Voice of America! I appreciate you being with us in the communist times. I was secretly listening the Voice of America as a child in Czechoslovakia. Listening this melody makes me cry. Thank you America. Wish you all the best!
