- Hey everyone! In today’s video I’ll be highlighting a 1979 Jeep Wrangler CJ5 with Golden Eagle Stickers. This review has been created to help a customer I’m working with so he can make a well informed decision before stopping by our dealership. The last year of the CJ5 was a rollover Year from 82 to 83 The information I've heard they only made 2,800 . If I'm wrong please correct me! I own one of these 83s

You know nothing of jeeps!!! CJ 5 was not the first civilian jeep, the indent on the side is for the fuel filler when the gas tank was under the seat. I stoped watching at that point.

@@danhunter9866 Early CJ 5's had the fuel tank under the seat and therefore that's where the fill spout would be.
The golden eagle package was not limited to the cj7. It was available on the cj5 also. I have a 1978 cj5 golden eagle. It is original and has everything the package is supposed to. "The golden eagle package was available from 76-83 on cherokee, j10, and cj models" .
CJ 2A was the first mass produced Jeep after WWII. The Agricultural Jeep was a prototype which was made after the MB. The shovel area you're referring to is where the original gas cap was on the 1955 model up to when the gas tank was moved to the back under the rear seat. The military version was the M38A1. The Wrangler name wasn't added until the YJ series that came put in 1987 after Chrysler took over Eagle and American Motors. The CJ5 started by Willys Motors and was produced after Kaoser bought them in the 50's or 60's. AMC took them over in 1970 to 1987. The engines for CJ were L and F head 1.4 4 cylinders, 225 Dauntless V-6 Buick engine, 232,258 inline 6 and 72 and up they stretched the front end for the V-8 models.

no,not a shovel,thats where the filler neck was on the older Jeeps.I had a 76' CJ5 with a built 304 and 6 inches of total lift,I was 5'11" and 175 lbs and had no problem getting in my Jeep,but it was a climb.I had manual brakes and steering and it drove just fine going down the road.
There is no such thing as a "cj5 wrangler" the wrangler was a continuation of the cj7 by chrysler. Also, horrible audio, hard to listen to...
Just found this video on my you tube suggestions page . From the start , he called it a WRANGLER . We know it’s not a wrangler . He said the indent on the side panel was for a shovel . Obviously he is confusing the tool slots of the MB and GPW and early CJ2a /body tubs with later jeep models such as the CJ5 . He shouldn’t state he’s done his research while making so many errors . The indention he spoke of on the drivers side was where the fuel filler neck was on earlier Jeep’s with fuel tanks under the drivers seat . Won’t judge though , I’m no expert . It’s obvious as well the hood decal was added on by a previous owner as it looks like a vinyl sticker like the wrap paint jobs they do now . The Golden Eagle decals look correct however . Only a VIN search will verify if it was an original Golden Eagle .
What caught me is that this Jeep , I believe he said was a 1979 , did not come factory with a T5 five speed on an in line 258 . That trans came on the 1982 - 1983 CJ5 with the 2.5 liter four cylinder and 82 - 86 CJ7 4.2 six cylinder . This Jeep is custom . I built the same combination , a 258 from a 1985 CJ7 with its T5 and Dana 300 on my 1980 CJ5 , which was a Canadian built 2.5 and SR4 four speed . Had to have the rear driveshaft made custom ( 12 5/8” center to center ) and a CJ7 front driveshaft . The engine in this Jeep appears original as it has the cast iron intake ( my 1985 258 has the aluminum intake started in ‘81 or ‘82 ) . It looks like a nice package and I hope whomever bought it still has good luck with it . Someone did a nice job of installing the trans and Dana 300 ( a 1979 would have a Dana 20 ) in this Jeep ( the t - case stick is d300 ) with the proper trans tunnel ( CJ5 or CJ7 ) installed nicely . I appreciate when folks make the effort to do the job right . Hope it’s still a good runner .

I'm 5'10" 300lbs and drive a 1963 Willys CJ5 with no issues.

I agree but I’d say Jeep sticks to its roots more than a lot of other manufacturers they still have 2 doors and Manuel’s with removable doors hard tops and even a folding windshield

The golden eagle package was offered for AMC Jeep cj5,cj7, Cherokee chief, and Jeep Hancho pickup truck. I have a 76 cj 5 and 6'1", although not the same as sliding into a conventional door of an automobile, I have no problems getting in or out.
Golden Eagles and other trim jeeps have a clock and ac. My 1978 cj7 is a levi edition it has radio, clock, and factory ac.

Yes , the Golden Eagle and Laredo trim had the clock , tach , air conditioning and tilt column in the CJ7 models . Don’t know what trim the CJ5 were optioned with those accessories . I don’t think the CJ5 ever came with a/c , tilt , clock , tach but not up on Cj5 options or trim past the stock trim . The tilt column I installed on my ‘80 CJ5 was out of a CJ7 . The LEVI edition was sweet but Levi Strauss cut AMC off after ‘79 I believe ? What a shame . Survivors are priceless today .
You might want to do a little more Jeep history before you start saying CJ5 is the first civilian Jeep
I have to agree. Calling it a "Wrangler" was our first clue. He might be a Jeep sales guy but not really a "Jeep guy". As long as we are all loving our Jeeps and open to learning, the rest will sort itself out.

@Kristen McCoslin Wow! Floor pans aint nothing in these old jeeps. My YJ has rotted almost all the floor pans, mostly cause of the carpet
The golden eagle package was not limited to the cj7. It was available on the cj5 also. I have a 1978 cj5 golden eagle. The tell tale sign that this is not a legit GE is that it has the 4.2l engine. The golden eagle only came with the 304 v8.

CJ5's were not called wranglers. I had a 75 CJ5, with a 3 speed manual and 304 v8 , it was NOT a Wrangler. It was a REAL truck.

Nope my dad bought a 78 cj5 golden eagle limited edition .1978. And the early jeeps had the gas tank under the driver's seat . Not for folding shovels.

Correct . The Kaiser Jeep’s were the last to have the gas tank under the drivers seat . I’m almost certain the ‘71 CJ5 started new changes . That was the last 81 inch wheelbase but I believe the first rear mounted gas tank and suspended brake and clutch pedals . No more floor board clutch/brake pedals . IMO , the ‘72 - ‘ 75 years were the last old school Jeep . 1976 took the Jeep out of the woods and onto the street starting the mall crawler thing . I love my 1980 CJ5 but will be happiest when my 1973 is road ready . Folding shovels , weren’t they issued with field packs ? Shovels and axes issued on Jeep MB and GPW did not fold , they strapped to the tool slot bodies .

I just inherited a 1981 cj5 from my father who passed away. I know nothing about it but is it possible to find hard tops for these? Sorry I didn’t watch the whole video so I didn’t catch it if you said that.

There is a company called Rally Tops that their on line advertisement states is a fiberglass hardtop and doors .

No, 1 Jeep Mad Golden Renegade and Golden Eagle had 304 cui v8 Eagle in cj5. No, 2 Renegade and Gloden Eagle had tilt steering wheel. No, 3 Golden Eagle CJ5 had power steering and power brakes. No, 4 CJ5
Your shovel hole is where the gas filler was on the earlier cj5 models (the gas tank was under the drivers seat)

The 4.0 has more power than the 4.2 did. Jeep was worried about people thinking it was a downgrade which is why the early 4.0 Jeeps said “4.0 High Output”.

It’s NOT a Wrangler. That model didn’t exist until Chrysler bought out AMC’s ownership of Jeep Corp. My first 4wd was a ‘79 CJ5 👍

Why the hell do people call cj’s a wrangler
To let us know how intelligent they are or are not. It saves us the hassle of figuring out whether they have any Jeep knowledge or not. Once they say a CJ is a Wrangler, we know they don't have a clue. Then we can stop listening but keep nodding and smiling. Just don't tell them we know they don't know. :-)
If ever you know someone personally who claims their correct that an ‘86 and older Jeep is a “ wrangler “ , just ask them to go to the auto parts store for you for something unimportant , just to teach them . No wait , I’ll bet it was the millennials in the auto parts stores that started calling a CJ a “ wrangler “ .

I think I had an aftermarket seat. It had a little bit of adjustment, but not much. I miss the old Jeeps. I plan on getting a CJ8 when I sell my JK.

@@CarolinaCarVideos The fact that you refer to the '79 CJ5 as a Wrangler is what made me scrutinize the video more closely. Look at the Jeep M2 vs CJ5's predecessor, the M38a1. The M2 had an axe and a shovel mounted on the drivers side but not in the orientation that would put a shovel where you are referring. The indentation in the area you are suggesting was from the M38a1 fuel intake. It was there on the original CJ5's but AMC relocated the fuel tank from underneath the driver's seat to under the vehicle entirely.
You made a video, but you don't know what you are talking about. If it's a CJ5, it's not a wrangler. Among other mistakes. Wow, the ignorance is strong with this one.

lol a sticker on the hood doesn't make it a golden eagle. If I remember the golden eagles came with the v9.. He is full of shit for the rest he is wrong with that spot that was where the gas spot was as the gas tank was under the seat in the old versions. I owned a CJ7 I did enjoy owning it though I got tired of working on it upgrading it so I sold it as it was my only ride. Like to own one again but they are becoming stupidly expensive. Seeing all these people not restoring them but putting in big axles low gears 350's and wanting $10,000-20000 or more. Trouble is you cant smog them if you do all that in this state. My jeep got about 12 mpg and it was a stock vehicle no way I want to have one with low gears.

I have an '81 CJ5 with 5" of lift, Mercedes Diesel, setting on 37'5. I'm 5'10" and it's an acrobatics act getting in n out but... I love it!
