  • This episode is all about typography. Or maybe its all about learning typography and graphic design. MVA Studio co-founder Joshua Hardisty shares his rules for typography which are really about how to get good at typography, he takes an Instagram question about the pros and cons of copying as a learning strategy and then there's a long stretch pulled from an actual Typography Studio critique at Minneapolis College of Art & Design
Chapter 1: The 10 Commandments of Type Studio
Chapter 2: Is It Bad to Learn Design by Copying? 20:00
Chapter 3: An Actual Type Studio critique 25:42
These posters were produced during a somewhat experimental process. The final crit would have been 2 weeks after this video was shot. This is a very realistic view of how I give feedback.
(My apologies for the terrible framing on this. I was super self-conscious about recording during class so the angles really suck.)

Wooow. Your approach gets me so excited to create. I found your RUclips and IG at a great time in my graphic design/typography journey. I was starting to get brainwashed about how design and type should be. It’s not that I don’t love some of the ideas, but I was starting to believe there is a box I should be trying to fit in. What’s funny is that’s not at all how I actually am, so I eventually would love had to break out of that. Glad it’s happening now. Thanks again and again

What you're saying is exactly what I'm hoping for. The point isn't to teach rules and sameness but to create an environment that allows you to be intentional (or exploratory) about where you want to be so that end up somewhere that's right for. So if after a period you end up doing very “safe” work at least you've discovered that it’s truly what you want to do. Or vice versa: you thought you should be doing work in a standard way and then you discover that you’re most inspired when the work is more obtuse or more playful then you can make career decisions to support that discovery. Glad that I can help make that happen.
