I dont usually play VN's but utawa series are different. There are only minor strategy elements in vastly VN part which i realized a bit late but that didnt diminished my interest. Its still pretty good game with a grand story, voice performances are very good as well. We lost main char voice actor 2 years ago as well which kinda makes me sad every time i hear his good performance :( rip Keiji. (also i would start with prelude to the fallen really).

Criticisms of Xenoblade Chronicles 2 are fair, especially from fans of the original game, but it's still in my top 5 favorite JRPG's. The battle system is far deeper than the first game's, the world is prettier, and the OST is low key one of the greatest of all time and an absolute triumph. Don't sleep on the Torna expansion either. Cheers

As someone who's played all 3 mainline Utawarerumono games. I HIGHLY suggest starting with Prelude to the Fallen instead of Mask of Deception. Prelude to the Fallen is the prequel and you'll get far more enjoyment of the series starting with this one.

    • @TheKisekiNut

That seems to be the prevailing theme here, a lot of people say to start with Prelude instead. So that's probably what I'll do.

@@TheKisekiNut From one Trails nut to another, I'd heavily recommend that too (or at least watch the anime). Mask of Deception / Truth are a lot like FC and SC, at the end of Deception there's an EVENT and you'll want to immediately jump into the next game. But you definitely want to play Prelude before Truth because reasons (you'll see what we mean when you get there). Great story / worldbuilding etc, incredible character development as well, based on your content I think you will LOVE the series

I just spent the last two months of 2021 playing Nier Replicant and then Nier Automata back-to-back for the first time, and I'm really struggling to pick a backlog after those. It feels like no game, JRPG or not, will come close to the experience of immersing myself in the way that both of those games' stories intersect and parallel. I've spent all of 2022 so far without even thinking about starting a new game. Instead, I've just been reading Nier and Drakengard side content and discovering new depths that both Nier games have, and I'm struggling to move on because it feels like any JPRG story is just going to feel less well-written in comparison

    • @Walamonga1313
      @Walamonga1313 2 года назад +3

I couldn't stomach Nier Auto's route B. Replaying everything but with worse gameplay, 9S (who I deeply dislike) and the hacking gimmick (which is pretty much forced on you) killed the game for me. By the time I started route C I was burnt out and barely played that, shame because I loved Route A. I still need to go back to the game now that I think about it, didn't list it on my backlog.

That’s a loaded backlog! I’m glad you were able to get a hold of a switch so you can experience some of its great exclusives. Xenoblade 2 and Fire Emblem 3H are two of my favorite games (spent ~170 & ~240 hrs on each respectively). For XC2, it does have its short comings which I’m sure you’ve heard, but despite those I still love it.
For utawarerumono, I would highly recommend starting with Prelude to the Fallen which came out early 2021. It’s a prequel to Mask of Deception and definitely enhanced my experience with it. Hope you enjoy it when you get around to it!

Three houses is one of those games I loved when I played it but I don't ever plan on going back, which while that's pretty common for me it seems the game kinda wants you to play through it multiple times. I played the Blue Lions route the first time through and loved it so much I refused to play any other routes because I refused to believe they would hold up like that one did. Having multiple storylines in a fire emblem game is nice and all, and the only ones I've played to completion are Fates Birthright and Three Houses Blue Lions Route, I feel like I would prefer a game with a single plotline, so I don't need to play it multiple times to experience the whole plot.

Mahoutsukai no Yoru (if Hollow moon finishes their translation which they should since the progress is almost done but my god it’s taking them so long it’s been like a year and the thing is there was already a translation before them just not all chapters but more than half were so what’s taking them so long)

    7. Fate extella link
    8. Xenosaga ep 1
    9. Dmc 1
    10. Dmc 3SE

Amazing backlog you got there - very much any kind of jrpg you can imagine covered. As I take my step into the JRPG-Genre after 15 years of playing other games, I start more... lets say traditionally. For 2022 - If Lost Ark is letting me play ANY ohter game due to the fact it will be heavily timeconsuming - my focus is on Ys 9, Cold steel 3 and 4 (right now, I am in 3), from the atelier games I will try out The Scion of Arland and if that fits my taste, then I dive into Ryza 1 and 2.
And then at last I want to experience real HISTORY. There are the pixel remasters of the first 6 Final Fantasy Games and I wanna play them all. Just to get a grasp of what Final Fantasy is about and why it became so popular.

My 2022 JRPG plan is (in no particular order!):
    Already completed:
    Ys: the Oath in Felghana
Ys Origin (Hugo and 3rd charafcter playthroughs after finishing it with Yunica last year)
Currently playing through (varying levels of completion!):
    - Dragon Quest 2,
    - Atelier Ryza,
    - Bravely Default 2
    - Secret of Mana
    - Ys V
    - Xenoblade Chronicles Definitive Edition
    Playing:
    - .hack GU Last Recode
    - Shin Megami Tensei V
    - Trials of Mana
    - SaGa Frontier (Remastered)
    - Ys VI: Ark of Napishtim
    - Ys Seven
    - Ys IX: Monstrum Nox
    - Tokyo Xanadu Ex
    - Atelier Escha & Logy
    - Atelier Shallie
    - Atelier Ryza 2
    - Grandia HD remaster
    - Scarlet Nexus
    - Nier Replicant
There's a definite possibility that both last year and this year will be dominated by Falcom releases, but I think I've got enough variety in the pipeline to keep me going for a little while!

Currently playing Trails of Cold Steel 1 (after binging the Sky and Crossbell games last year), so of course all 4 of the Cold Steels are on my backlog. Also still need to play Bravely Default II, Ni No Kuni, 13 Sentinels, Scarlet Nexus, Final Fantasy X and XII, Romancing Saga 3, Xenoblade Definitive Edition, the Cross Code DLC, and the rest of Atelier Ryza. Also need to go back and do some new game plus runs on Xenoblade 2 and Three Houses... sometimes I feel like I've bitten off more than I can chew.

This only my personal take on it since i played all 3 Utawarerumono games in the right order starting with 1 then MoD and then MoT. If u wanna start with MoD thats fine but u might miss out some background story since the cast of the first game will also play a bigger role especially in game 3 MoT. Also because i played everything in order and im a sucker for good drama MoT made me cry like bitch a lot on different events D:
so yeah if u have time and the will i would recommend starting with the first game in the series. Each game takes around 30-40~hour for the story depending how fast ur are but he last game is the longest.

Ar Tonelico 1&2 (game also made by Atelier Team) have good story and character. The Ar Tonelico music is eargasmic ahah. Sadly these games are still PS2 exclusivity, but you can emulate them. Fire Emblem: Three House is still the most played game on my Switch, and by quite a considerable distance. Even me getting lost in Animal Crossing during 2020's UK lockdown wasn't enough to unseat it's behemoth playtime. As a result it's also one of my favourite games on said console. Whoever designed the "Day Off" system on the game, where you run around the school, talk to students and faculty alike, shop and even fish in the school pond definitely played a certain series that is beloved by this channel. Sure, there are people who likes one more than the other but they are both good games of high quality (with their defaults of course). Don't hesitate to look up spoiler free tutorials for Xeno 2's combat though. I've no idea how many people are going to see this given that this video is a few months old, but hey here goes: 'Crystar' on the Switch runs really well and I'm bloody surprised to say the least. The story from what I've played is captivating and the central themes of the game bleeds into the different areas of gameplay which gives a wholeness to the experience. 'Nights of Azure' is an odd one, I love GUST and this game will be added to another one I've enjoyed. Simply put it's a simplified DMC mixed in with Pokémon with a great OST and a strong Yuri story.

TL;DR, my backlog is big for JRPGs that I own and that I plan to buy, and even bigger when you add all the smaller non-JRPG (but mostly RPG) games that I haven't played or finished.
I spend way too much of my time on FF14, so I still need to finish most of my games, and a lot of JRPGs are included. I still have to finish the Trails in the Sky games, Cold Steel 3 & 4 (I have been putting them off until I either play the Crossbell games via fan patch or when they release the Official English versions), Bravely Default 2, SMT5, FE:Three Houses, Ni No Kuni 1 and finish the last part of 2, at least 5 of the Atelier games, I still need to buy the Utawarerumono games and Nier Replicant and several other games I kept putting off buying, I technically didn't fully finish Nier Automata I only did ending A (and some of the optional endings), Night of Azure 1 & 2 since I never finished those, a bunch of games I am 100% forgetting, and as for non-JRPGs (which are still mostly RPGs) my tiny, tiny, tiny backlog of well over 700 or 800 games that I own, most of which are smaller games on Steam, thankfully, sadly some of them are on PS3 and mine no longer works.

From what I remember of an old interview back when Atelier Ayesha released, the aftermath of the earthquake that hit Japan (the same one that made Square release Good king moggle mog before leviathan and titan in FF14) is the main reason as to why the Dusk trilogy is more somber (calling it dark is kind of an overstatement) in tone than all the other Atelier games.

As for the others, I am also working on the Yakuza games right now, and 13 Sentinels looks really good but I am limited to PC only nowadays. Wife & Kid are on the TVs so my gaming is limited to my Office on the PC where I have privacy :P Fortunately Tales are on PC I have also been playing those, I just really wish Persona 5 would come to PC as I hear that is excellent. Xenoblade 2 is far better than it's reputation - it starts off slowly, but towards the end it ignites one firework after the other, I totally loved it (even more than Xenoblade 1). Fire Emblem is also amazing, awesome gameplay, great characters and huge replay value, I sunk many, many hours into this one. If you loved Automata you will definitely love Replica too - it may not be as magnificent as Automata, in my opinion, but it's still a gorgeous game.

    about utawarerumono
NO mask of deception is not the best way to start this series since it's the second game and in term of interconnectivity it's close to cold steel is to the sky games (and mask of truth is litteraly like cold steel 4 in term of merging all plot developpement to one point)
There's a remake to the first game called prelude to the fallen which was release in 2020 in psvita/ps4 and later on pc, that's the one you should start, they are avaiable on english. While mask of deception is not the worse entry to start like cold steel is for the trails series, the game expect you to have played the first game. The first game does more job to introduce to the world while the sequels expanded a lot which gonna be very confusing the more you progress without knowledge given by the first game.

      otherwise for me jrpg backlog
right now i'm on stella glow on my 3ds, awfull chara design for the female witch but the game is fine so far. I'm still at the first half of the game so there's still room left for this game to surprise me (like he already does in term of dialogue, it's better written than what i expect).
otherwise for my others jrpg for this year i have (in no order) :
      -Astral chain (if that's count)
-Ys seven to 9 + the spin off with trails in the sky
      - Gurumin
      - Mary Skelter 2 (which include also a remake of the first game on it)
      - Shin Megami Tensei 4
      - Xanadu Next
      - Pokemon Shield
      - Atelier Sophie
      - The Zwei duology
      - Suikoden 1 and 2
      - Xenogears
      - Radiant Historia
      - Tokyo Xanadu
      - Digital Devil Saga 1 (maybe also the second game)
      - Atelier Ryza
      - Ar Tonelico 1
      - Omori
      - Super Neptunia RPG
      - Fire Emblem Awakening
      - Tales of symphonia
      - Dragon's crown

I was gonna start with Prelude, but I read in quite a few circles that starting with Mask apparently is the better option. In their words (this is the line that ultimately convinced me) 'as you won't have the same sense of mystery if you play Prelude first and know the truth about the world and a certain important character. Mask of Deception was also made with newcomers in mind'. Would be interested to hear your take on that as a lot of other commenters seem to share the same sentiment in starting with Prelude. I imagine it will catch me either way, but always best to have the optimal starting point.

    • @MrRaichu12
      @MrRaichu12 2 года назад

@@TheKisekiNut but the reveal in mask of deception omit a lot of things because he expect you to already know about the first game. And again it expanded what what build in the first game. Sure the game was create with newcommers in mind but that because the sequel was release 12 years after the original game. Bringing again the comparison with the trails series but it's like the Azure/Cold Steel 1/2 in come of how the narrative was create. Like Cold Steel 1/2 spoil azure and not the opposite (zero too but even more azure since they happened at the same time), it's the same thing with utawa. Although the narrative in mask of deception/truth play with your expectations of what you already know of the first game.
In any case yeah Mask of Deception is not the worse way to jump into the series but you gonna lost a lot of enjoyment from this game (and having killer spoilers from the first game) since it's a game who is mainly a expansion of what was etablished before.
I would say the sense of mystery if it's the thing who grab you the most is stronger in prelude since deception/truth the mystery is put across the two game but is more slow to be established because well that was already done masterfully in the first game so they focus on something different at first (and i stop there because it's hard to talk but what is build and executed across the two sequel is absolutely blast)

Yoru nai no kuni(Nights of Azure) is pretty great too, also, people might trash-talk the second game a lot but do give it a try, it's got good soundtrack and its combat can actually be pretty fun, sadly other weapons are locked out behind minions's abilities in second game.

Man, hearing the Xenoblade 2 perception from someone who hasn't played it hurts a bit. Xenoblade X is easily within my top 10 games of all time, while Xenoblade DE might be make it to top 30, but Xenoblade 2 is easily in my top 5 favorite games I've ever played. Part of this might be because the Xeno series very well might be my favorite series (Kiseki is still very new to me and might overtake it in the future), so I've spent a lot of time immersed in all the games in the Xeno series. And what I've found is that pretty much everything about Xenoblade 1 (other than the environments and music) completely falls apart under any major scrutiny. Gameplay and story in particular. Meanwhile I appreciate Xenoblade 2 the more I engage with it, the gameplay and story especially.
It's really unfortunate that the tutorials for Xenoblade 2 are so terrible, because once you learn how the systems actually work, they become some of the fastest, tightest systems in any game I've played (and the Challenge Mode DLC allows you to fully engage with them due to insane difficulty also). It takes a long time to fully learn to exploit the system to your favor, but when you do, the superbosses become beatable with ease (which is why Challenge Mode is so nice, the superbosses are a joke to many challenges). I've kinda made the game sound really easy, but trust me, it isn't (not super difficult either, just kinda a middle ground).
Also as for FE 3H, it's a game I really like, but don't feel like you need to play all the routes. So much of any route is shared among all routes (the first 12 chapters are nearly identical with strong similarities even later). Fortunately the game doesn't beat you up to badly if you skip over a lot of the biggest time sinks though (unless you are a lunatic who plays on maddening mode... ie me, who wants to finish every FE game on the hardest difficulty).

Ok i may be wrong and just seeing things but does that Sakura Wars have the same character designs as Bleach? Designs from Tite Kubo? I could be wrong. And dude your in for a hell of a year hahaha Xenoblade 1 (not 2), Three Houses and SMT V will make your 2022 alone!! Hope you enjoy

You should play Xenoblade Chronicles 2 with japanese voices. Those are great and so is the game itself. And play Torna the golden country as well!

Hopefully you do a playthrough of XB2. I prefer it over XB1. Better cast of characters and more interesting story. I prefer the battle system more as well.

There's a lot of praise for XC2, so that's a good sign. Like I say, I've seen the game first hand, it looks like something I'd enjoy anyway.

I hope to finally finish Persona 5 this year, I got the ball rolling when Strikers came free on plus. There was a time when I didn't want to play anything and it's been 3 years since I wasn't in the game like SMT Nocturne which has a save for years on PS2 but with the PS4 version it was irresistible to get. Mostly hope to get Relayed as I love mecha,Tokyo Xanadu while waiting for Trails from Zero to come out
