I'm 100% for disallowing patting. It isn't intrinsically rewarding but a scratch is. The difference is people don't get the chance to see you doing a quiet scratch. Well not disallowing but discouraging I guess.
Yes more please! About patting horses... in observing horses in social settings it appears to me that the only time they "pat" each other is when they're kicking the snot out of each other. However, rubbing and scratching is a very common behavior indicating affection. So I'm in the "let's not pat horses" camp. While we're at it let's try to agree that patting is not in canine language at all. So yeah, let's rub and scratch the dogs too. 😀 The go pro was a bit unnerving lol. I prefer a helmet cam.😊😍 Love your vlogs and omg Ember is a different horse these days. 😊
The sweetest horse on earth is the TB-they are psychic-they read your mind they want to please- they just need to be settled down and gain strength and learn to believe in themselves through you-they are rushed and overworked as babes-we all know this but it must be reiterated-there is no horse like a well bred TB-hopefully never raced and started at 4.congrts -Ember is amazing-he is so proud of himself Debra

Wow Ember has really improved with Justine riding him in the last few months. Sometimes another rider can just make that difference so when you get back on it feels like another horse! You rode him with more confidence in this video, as he isn't easy to ride so well done Lucy... especially the water elements, going back to walk and trot is the answer as you can build on that... he is a super red pony....❤❤

I thought he did brilliantly. No stopping or swerving away, kept in a rhythm the whole time. The Go Pro footage was not awful, though mostly would see his neck and head, but it was great to experience going over the jumps etc. I felt quite out of breath by the time you got back!😆😆😆 You are so lucky to have Justine in your life who genuinely cares about you and your horses.
Wow. So wonderful to see you and Ember jumping and having a ball. It's funny because I've always thought if he could just move forward and not be worried about anything but what he is doing. That's what happened here. He was focused on what he was doing and you were confident that he could do it. You were also confident about yourself. Such a game changer. I've always loved Ember (his spookiness and silliness never bothered me but I'm all about OTTBs) but it's great to see him jumping cross country and having fun doing it.

By quite a few horses reaction to patting(flinching), they don't seem to understand you are pleased with them. In fact some look like they think they're being punished.Suppose it's what they're used to.

When you switch up 2 pieces of gear, how do you know which was most effective, bit or martingale? Can’t pat your pony? What’s next, banning the Pat the Bunny book? Will they ban carrying a crop or whip in competition? It would seem hypocritical to ban patting your pony but still allow crops/whips. Bit of mixed messages to the kids. Anyways, good riding all around! I hope he maintains his cool in competition. It’s really good to see you out riding again.
I quite liked the go-pro footage bc it felt a bit like we were in the saddle seeing Ember’s mane bouncing up and down. Also, loved that you were counting into the jumps - trying hard to make that a habit myself!
