Is what Jim, talks about regarding order and chaos, also you could put the access at order and freedom or order and creativity, what happens with governments as they mature, some government structures when you are created out of chaos great benefit happens, but the inevitable direction of the bureaucracy is towards more and more order until it becomes totalitarian and then the system throws a fault chaos is introduced and it starts all over again? Is there a way of adding into the system something that would keep it from becoming too ordered and or reverting to a chaotic perturbation? Be well, thanks for a fantastic insightful podcast.
I find that Lex justifies suffering and trauma too much as a positive thing, I also find it a bit arrogant when he has had a relatively privilleged life and is always talking about how much more meaning people have when going through pain. You don't take into consideration how trauma and suffering can drive to you to suicide or to never being able to live a functioning life. I don't know why you always make out suffering is so essential when to me your life is complete luxury and oppurtunity - everything a man could ask for you have. It's not right for you to talk about the necessity of suffering when you are like Schopenhaur sitting in your ivory tower while the masses don't get the same as what you do. It's like your idea of suffering is getting up at 5am and disciplining yourself, try doing that AND having PTSD in an environment that fights you at every chance, to have no parents, no guidence in life, these are not positive things but I always feel like you project your own minor existential sufferings as being the same as people who really deserve better and gain nothing from their circumstances.
Yeah, it is certainly a mixed bag. Just like that famous photo of that skin and bones child, and a vulture close by waiting for it’s due. The child was running out of energy on a walk to a food bank. None of it is justified, but I now have that child’s perspective to understand my suffering was a gift in comparison. Life, right?
It’s about the flow state, in some part. We often want/ thrive in SOME challenge, but not too much challenge. But there are always exceptions to the rule (80/20 rule, let’s say), all the way up & all the way down. History will remember Elon Musk in the same way we remember Einstein, Da Vinci, Newton and Tesla etc. I doubt the same can be said for any other human alive today.
I think eventually all those people will be forgotten. We forget that the last 200 years have been only a tiny sliver of a sliver of time in the scale of human history. People seek immortality through status, fame, prestige, etc. These types of discussions can cause an idolization effect, rather than seeing the humanity behind them.
even people that disagree with him on things will find a hard time disagreeing with that i think. One could argue that maybe in terms of intelligence he is not exactly einstein or newton but if we are talking about his impact on the development of science and technology, elon is definitely up there.
I’m sorry but I don’t think this is true. Ask yourself what Elon’s big accomplishments are, and then compare them to the people on your list. I’m not saying that none of his endeavors have the potential to be successful, but Einstein, da vinci, newton, and Tesla? I don’t think he’s anywhere near these figures by a long shot. He’s also not the engineer behind all of his companies’ projects which really makes me feel like he’s given quite a bit of undue praise.
Think about why Lex talks about Elon. It's more than just being a "fan" that won't shut up about Elon. Lex has been devoted his entire life to AI research, and now see sees a man that has the resources to invest millions if not billions into AI research as a foundation for at least two companies: Neuralink and Tesla. Despite all of his doubters, Elon is an AI pioneer and has been highly disruptive within several industries. How could Lex not love to talk about someone trying to drag this world (sometimes kicking and screaming) into the future?
This captures so many truths about so many endeavors.
