We are one of the unlucky ones who wiped out on Friday May 17th, 2024. We were NOT speeding and the crew left an oil slick on the paved portion. State trooper said we were the 16th wreck that morning and it was only 12:30! They called the road crew back out to finish the top layer over the oil slick they left. We rode it on Thursday 5/16 while they were working and it was fine. But they apparently left Thursday evening and left it nothing but an oily mess. They should have shut down the road after us as number 16 that day!! Who knows how many were after us. Cop said go play the lottery because we were the lucky ones that survived and walked away.
As a regular on The Dragon, I'm waiting till they're done, we've had a couple of good rains to wash it, and let others put some rubber down and clean it off before I go back. Looking forward to hitting it end of summer and the fall. Till then, there are plenty of other places to ride.
While I understand some people just want to be where everyone else is - there are great motorcycle roads all over TN and NC. I've ridden the TOTD but frankly worry more about the other traffic than I do my own actions. I'm of the age where a ride is fun, and I don't need to test physics much anymore.
Need to shut down
Until its paved it might not be a bad idea. Close it 6 hours at a time.
