  • Derby County: Bye Bye Baseball Ground - Take a trip down memory lane with Derby historian Richard Felix
The ground was part of Derby County's history for well over 100 years. The Rams first started playing league matches on a regular basis on the ground in 1895 Derby played its last match at the Baseball Ground on the Saturday 11th of May 1997 in a 1-3 defeat against Arsenal. Baseball ground continued to be used for reserve team games until 2003. Baseball ground was finally demolished and replaced by housing

Such a shame that nearly all these type of grounds have gone to be replaced by horrible soulless identikit stadiums with no atmosphere. I’m a Manchester United fan and I only went there once in 88/89 I think we got a 2-2 draw. I remember mcclair scoring for us. Great atmosphere there.

I'VE been to OT once in the mid to late 90s, as an away fan. It felt really strange, like I was watching a game in a posh hotel. Odd atmosphere...
I saw better games at Gigg Lane Bury, with the United reserves!

Watching this and another video with the demolition footage makes me kinda emotional and the nostalgia is kicking in and I'm not even a Derby fan!
It's just all the stadiums back then had a unique identity, inside the city, in residential areas. Which is in complete contrast to the new ones that all look alike and are on the outskirts.
Always had a soft spot for Derby County. Respect from a Liverpool fan, the reigning Champions of Europe.

Thank you for this video - brilliant to see the Baseball ground, warts and all. I loved the old stadiums, and have fond memories of visiting these lovely characterful old grounds as an away supporter like the Baseball Ground, Maine Road, Burnden Park, The Den, Filbert Street, Highfield Road, and my beloved home ground of Highbury. Sadly I never managed to get to Ayresome Park and Roker Park. Football was great in those days standing on the terraces, happy footie memories - thank you again :-)

I'm really glad I got to see a match at The Baseball Ground, it was such a unique stadium. Some of the fan chants were very humourous too. With the crowd so close to the pitch the atmosphere was electric. Modern stadiums are boring in comparison.

I'll never forget 1996 promotion against crystal palace. I was 11 years old when we beat them 2-1 and made it to the premiership with jim smith. The atmosphere that day was no doubt the best ever I have seen at a game. After the final whistle I ran on to the pitch and took a piece of turf home with me and planted it in my garden. That was the best time of my life to be a derby fan. I feel so fortunate to have been able to watch such a great Derby team. It makes me sad that they knocked the ground down and the only thing we have to remember the baseball ground is a shitty uninspiring sculpture surrounded by a housing development. Parts of the stands should of been saved and turned into a memorial or a museum. It was one of the founding members of the football league and the history this place had was immense.

Thanks for posting this, an abridged version of the original video which began with Richard Felix explaining the origins of DCFC and its move to the BBG in 1895, and ending with a pictorial history of the ground's development and an anecdote from a long-term supporter, aka Flash. Unique and precious despite the shortcomings in picture quality.

Fascinating video. I'm a United fan and this brings back lots of great memories. As a 17 year old, I was at the Baseball Ground in August, '89 to watch United get beat by Derby 2-0. The turnstiles for the away end were so small and tight; the kickoff was delayed because of United fans being in the home sections and the aggro between both sets of supporters before the match was brilliant. Sorry we lost that day, but thoroughly enjoyed my trip down to a truly historic ground.

They used to play baseball on the ground before the Derby cricket team took over the ground, the cricket team then formed their own football team as an offshoot (Derby County) and as the football team became more successful and well supported, the ground was then refitted to become the football ground, however, using the name the ‘Baseball Ground’ to pay homage to its history
