THANK YOU!!! I have just started reading in church and wanted to put a bit of umph into it as most of our readers are bland but I didn’t want to stand out as the odd one. This has given me the confidence to do it. I’ll try it tomorrow in church.

This is so true! I'm afraid the public reading of scripture is a lost art. I RARELY hear someone who, by reading, brings the bible to LIFE! We need to get into the 'spirit' of the bible. No more just droning on and on. I HAVE heard the bible read well in public. It's amazing in that reading the bible well--there's hardly a reason to say anything BEYOND that. As a preacher I believe there should be great expository preaching. But the proper reading of God's word goes along way in and of itself. Be blessed my brothers and sisters in Christ.

The problem is, is that most people do not understand what they are reading. They are just words on a page. Some people can even recite them from memory but with still no idea what they are reading.

Thank you for this video. I am reading scripture for my church and the pastor told me to read it as the beautiful story that it is. Read with reverence and feeling.

Thank you Dan. I found this very helpful (though this is almost 2 years after you posted the video). I think the bible should be read the way it is written - that is the reading should convey all the nuances, emotions and expressions that the authors intended.

Totally agree with you, Dan. When a reading is mumbled in a monotone fashion it becomes - frankly - boring and irrelevant. Giving inflection adds power to the words and makes people sit up.

    Hello my friends.
The Qur'an does not reject reading the Bible. Instead, it gives many positive references concerning the Bible and the importance for Muslims to read it:
"Lo! We did reveal the Torah, wherein is guidance and a light" (Sura 5:44).
"And We caused Jesus, son of Mary, to follow in their footsteps, confirming that which was (revealed) before him in the Torah, and We bestowed on him the Gospel wherein is guidance and a light, confirming that which was (revealed) before it in the Torah - a guidance and an admonition unto those who ward off (evil)" (Sura 5:46).
"It is He Who sent down to thee (step by step), in truth, the Book, confirming what went before it; and He sent down the Law (of Moses) and the Gospel (of Jesus) before this, as a guide to mankind, and He sent down the criterion (of judgment between right and wrong)" (Sura 3:3).
"And be not thou of those who deny the revelations of Allah, for then wert thou of the losers" (Sura 10:95).
In addition, the Qur'an calls the Bible the Word of God (kalam Allah) in Sura 2:75, the Book of God (kitab Allah) in Sura 2:101; 3:23; 5:44; 28:49, and the enlightening book in Sura 3:184. Further, the Qur'an teaches that Allah Himself sent the Law (of Moses) and the Gospels: "It is He Who sent down to thee (step by step), in truth, the Book, confirming what went before it; and He sent down the Law (of Moses) and the Gospel (of Jesus) before this, as a guide to mankind, and He sent down the criterion (of judgment between right and wrong)" (Sura 3:3).
The Qur'an calls the Bible, or parts of the Bible, a light (Sura 5:44, 46), an example (Sura 11:17), and a warning (Sura 17:4). It also states that the authors of the Bible were inspired (Sura 4:163; 5:111).
In many places and a variety of ways, the Qur'an's teachings overwhelming support the importance of the Bible and permit Muslims to read and learn from it.
    Quran 29:46
And argue not with the people of the Scripture (Jews and Christians), unless it be in (a way) that is better (with good words and in good manner, inviting them to Islamic Monotheism with His Verses),
May GOD guide you all to the right path.

We are in danger of it becoming stodgy if we just read it flat from the Lectern. Reading with passion brings it alive for others and keeps it fresh. I am more likely to listen intently if the reader thinks about what they are reading. After all there are some wonderful dramatic readings of the Gospels that don't make it any less Holy.

I think the Bible should be revered because it's the Holy word of God.
We need to read it with all the emotions and passion that come with it.

I do not understand the logic of casually saying that your own readings are "off the top of my head" in a video about considered, prepared and effective Bible reading matters. Are you setting an example: that Scripture reading should be full of care, to affirm it's eternal importance, and not mumbled or "off the top of your head." What you are arguing for is right, proper and very important. Please practice the care you advocate for.
