If it is true that the end of Romanticism coincided with the invention of electric light, then we can date this to 1880 - the year in which Thomas Alva Edison patented the light bulb. At around this time, a brilliant student at the Paris Conservatoire, Claude Debussy, decided to embark upon a composing career that would soon ‘illuminate’ the history of music.
Debussy’s output is roughly divided into three periods, each of which is represented by one of the three discs in this set. Focusing solely on his works for piano duo, the collection effectively represents a vantage point from which to analyse his stylistic development, since it touches on both Debussy's piano and orchestral writing simultaneously: as well as original keyboard works (Lindaraja is one example, the composer's first work inspired by Spain), there are piano pieces arranged for orchestra, vice-versa compositions (Prélude a l'après-midi d'un faune, for instance) and music that was clearly intended for the orchestra or for specific ensembles (one example is Le triomphe de Bacchus, for which the orchestration was never completed).
Performing these works are two of Italy's most celebrated pianists, Massimiliano Damerini and Marco Rapetti. Their accomplished readings highlight the unique relationship that exists between piano and orchestra - the former can be seen as a monochromatic version of the latter, with the latter essentially describing the former in polychromatic terms - and, at the same time, draw the listener's attention towards an important area of 19th-century music-making: namely piano transcriptions’ vital role in making operatic and symphonic repertoire available to all.

A
Nice that they arranged the works in chronological order of composition, allowing us to trace Debussy's sonic evolution. Everything until L'Enfant prodigue is clearly working through late Romanticism towards his mature style. A friend of mine with whom I played duets wanted to attempt La Mer, but we never got to it much to my regret. Although it really was beyond our technical capabilities, so perhaps it was for the best. Lovely to hear this great recording. Apparently Debussy also drafted Printemps, Lindaraja, the Danses, and the Faune in duet versions before orchestrating. Wonder why he settled for solo drafts of Jeux and Boite a Joujou. Have to research that.
Might be of interest to some: The version of Printemps performed here is the first of two versions that exist. The second is an arrangement of the (later) version orchestrated and revised (with Debussy's oversight and approval) by Henri Büsser. In the second version the composition was tightened up (in my opinion, of course), with some phrase repetitions and small sections removed (for instance, at 01.47.04 to about 01.47.14). Note: In this collection, "Piano Duo" apparently includes works for both single-piano-4-hands as well as two-piano works. Nice performances, and it's generous of the performers/publishers to have made them available.

Wow, what a treasure! Debussy's never-ending inventiveness is illustrated by these fabulous piano duos which I never even knew existed!
Oh, yes! There were those established two-piano works which were recorded many times.
Yes, there were those two-piano arrangements of so many of Debussy's masterpieces, but there were so many that were never recorded before
that show Debussy's mastery and magnificent musical genius.
As a pianist who studied many Debussy works, I would have liked to hear about some of these undiscovered treasures before I attempted some of his later works which were nail-bitingly hard for a young person.
Thank you for giving us this review of Debussy's magnificence!!

@@vamp7812 Huh???
I love Debussy and was not aware of all of this 4hand music. It is a delightful performance. I feel as if Debussy himself would approve of the artistry in this recording,
Manifique! Debussy.
A brand new list to enjoy again.
very Debussy but slightly different in style.
Beautiful cover also.
Such a gift when winter's coming
Delightful !
Just marvellous, thanks for sharing!!
Another excellent one. I can’t get enough of your content! Time to make some music myself. 🎷💝💔💕🎺
Can we call his work elegant disorder? Must be why l like it so much, now that I'm 66, wow one of them seniors. It's not like all that romantic schlup and oh, the epic classical- no, give me what for me is reality music, to go with me on down the remaining road. Rock on, Claude.
This is wonderful, thank you !
Absolutely excellent!! Thank you!!
Love all of your posts, keep finding myself coming back. Only problem is I should be spending that time working on my own music! I wish you much continued success!
All your songs make me want to keep working on fulfilling my own dream. Music is really everything to me, and by the quality of your compositions, I can tell it is the same for you too! 💞💙❤️💕
Beautiful! Thank you 😊 💓

It isn't possible to wish for any more performance !
It is the best music that shakes person,s soul .
How much influence does this music have on your heart ?
You are literally everywhere... Debussy means everything to me, his music is, for me, my escape to this imperfect reality.

Thankyou
I feel as if my soul is being sucked away in Debussy‘s music.
The comfort of Debussy‘s music is irreplaceable
Hang in there
Left in frustration after two ad interruptions in the middle of a track. Came back to leave a comment as to why I stopped watching this video. Unfortunate.

I just srarted listening to this. Going to shut it off before i see first add.. thanks for 5he warning
It's what i noticed as well. It doesn't sound that debussy.

What ever happened to Debussy L'sle Joyeuse?
That's a work for solo performer.
Interesting to hear "A Mighty Fortress Is Our God" around 3:25:00. Is this hymn well known in France? Was Debussy religious?
Debussy was not religious, but he greatly experimented with what had been done before him. The hymn was originally written by Luther, and is therefore well-known in many languages, usually to the same tune. Many composers (Bach, Handel, Pachbel, Mendelssohn, etc) adapted the melody to their own style, but I must admit Debussy's is so "Debussy" I hadn't even noticed it was in there until you pointed it out! Thanks!

DO YOU ALSO HEAR THAT ? LA MER (part I) = GAMELAN MUSIC !
5:57 Rachmaninoff?
Marco Rapetti and Massimiliano Damerini

Debussy's usually great but man, sometimes he's hitting random keys on the piano or entering an endless transition
Well, Debussy was developing a very personal style that involves a lot of dissonances and polytonal music. As a matter of fact, you can hear in many of his compossitions some early approaches to Jazz music. I think that where all of these new and uncommon techniques are more noticible is in his Études, but I doubt there's any randomness in his music; or, at least I prefer to think he's incomprehended, even today
He had a personal composing style and a reason for every note. Every composer has an odd choice or two somewhere.
