Interestingly, it's the exact thing Caesar, another member of the Nine Worthies, did when the people of Rome tried to crown him king: "Jupiter is the only king of Rome." Cynical historians attribute these episodes to political motives, or populist sentiments, but thing every great ruler of every pre-modern civilization had that it's impossible to find in modern rulers is: piety and zeal for his religion.
Kinda Sad that Barbarossa is only remembered for his demise. And no he didnt drown 🤣, sources say that he suddenly fell, as he was trying to take a bath in the river, was fished out of the water and lived for hours until he died, probably a combination of his old heart, the heat and the ice cold water.

Raynauld de Chatillion is, perhaps, the most historically correct character in the Kingdom of Heaven movie. The dude just loved raiding. In times of war or peace - doesn't matter. See a muslim caravan - raid it. And if there are no more caravans on land - go to the Red sea and raid there.
Raynauld of Chatillion is not portrayed historically accurate at all in Kingdom of Heaven really, this idea that he was some bandit or rogue is sort of misleading. Some like to allude to his raiding of a Egyptian caravan going through his lands as the reason for Saladin's invasion, despite the caravan being armed which was a highly provocative thing to do. Or for example the red sea raids which were strategic and political operations aimed at discrediting Saladin as the protector of Islam through threatening their holy places. He is certainly an interesting figure, not any less sincere in his faith and actions than someone like Richard of Lionheart.
The guy who betrayed and sabotaged the first crusade? Nope. Also, Crusading was a thing only in Catholicism, as it required submission to the Pope/Roman Church, something the Byzantines were not.

Frederick II's "Crusade" for sure, we can only guess how pious his original intentions were but ultimately all his actions were only to spite the pope and legitimise himself as Emperor. He got loaned Jerusalem, Bethlehem, Nazareth for a a little more than a decade, without any of the vital fortresses or surrounding lands which would have been vital to defend it, the Knights Templar and Hospitallers were furious about this. Understandable, as the lack of those strongholds would make it very hard to protect Jerusalem and the Christian pilgrims who after hearing of the supposed "success" of Frederick II's "Crusade" and the recovery of the Holy Sepulchre flocked to the Holy land in droves only to be slaughtered or enslaved by marauding bandits as the countryside was filled with them and the journey from the protected coastal cities like Acre to the hinterland was very dangerous. The Knightly orders concerns were to be proven true when in 1244 Jerusalem was sacked the Holy Sepulchre partly desecrated, a fate which it was spared from when Saladin took it in 1187 and most of the cities inhabitants were killed, enslaved and the remaining Christians exiled.
