I haven't drawn in 6 years and last week I started drawing again. It's been sooooo rough. Everything you said is exactly true. That pressure to be where you once were can be debilitating. I'm trying to give myself permission to be shit in the hopes of one day not being shit. 😄 I'm so immensely impressed with all the emotion and information your seemingly simple illustrations convey, its really something to strive towards. Spring Montes I’m in the same boat. I used to be so passionate about my art, but after I got out of high school, I slowly lost my creative spark.
It’s been eight years now and I just bought a sketchbook. I’m trying to “re-learn” the basics of art, and just get used to doing a sketch and knowing it doesn’t HAVE to turn into a masterpiece. It is hard, but finding videos like these reminds me that I’m not the only one going through this. You should never give up on something that once brought you so much happiness.

I feel emotional right now. Your video came at such an opportune time. I suddenly started to struggle with drawing and painting these past months. I couldn't get myself to draw and enjoy it at ALL. Even with the usual things that I liked to paint. Worst art block I've had ever. I've even started to think maybe this is the end of my trying to make my art as my source of income.

What do you recommend when someone has been in a rut for years? I used to be a prolific artist but depression and circumstances really dragged me down. I just got an Apple pencil and feel ready to start again but I'd be lying if I said I wasn't terrified of how bad it's going to look after literal YEARS of zero practice.
I know my skills have faded badly and I am nowhere near where I was but I have to start back up. Any recommendations?

The Mad Lolita i noticed no one gave you a response so i hope you don't mind me answering? I've been going through a serious rut myself. 2010-now I've come from filling a sketchbook a month to maybe 4 drawings a year. Depression and anxiety definitely made me feel like less of a person because it felt like art was all i was as a person. It was discouraging to "lose my worth" when i just couldn't connect to my creativity anymore. It physically made me cry if i pushed myself too hard to draw. That bad (still is somewhat). What I've done is get a simple cheap sketchbook outside of my norm, as I'm super picky over my paper weight. Literally something you won't care about messing up, no nice paper or whichever. The book is small enough to fit in my purse, around 5x6 i think. And i just doodle as i go. Pen, pencil, anything. I make an effort not to worry about what it'll look like, or WHO I'm drawing of any of my characters. I don't worry about if I'm doing the same pose over and over. Just, all those things they ask you to be aware of to "push your art" i just tossed out the window instead of not feeling good enough as an artist because i couldn't work towards being a better artist. So just. Draw. Get a random sketchbook and just Draw. Just literally draw, doodle, anything. Play with cheap kids markers. Play with cheap gel pens. If you only get an outline of a head or torso or flower, it's ok. Like they said in this video "take it easy." Art should be something fun. Don't worry about your skills just yet, just try to put pen/pencil to paper. Good luck!

I believe in this quote where, "An artist's drawing about someone they like is their biggest confession." It was the reason why I started drawing people I like again before switching it up and being serious. It's important to feel happy and draw for fun again like you used to before you get technical!

Omg, I really thought, I was the only one going through this!! I used to be an artist with a goal, a perspective and hard skills. I was drawing pretty much from the cradle to the end of high school. I was even making portraits for money back then. Then I fell into something nothing short of a black hole. I came out on the other side, 12 years later, having to gather the shards of my artist identity. I couldn't even touch a pen for over a decade. Unthinkable. Had someone told me at the age of sixteen, that I wouldn't be drawing anything for a period longer than a day, I would have laughed them off and called them crazy. But sadly it's reality. But I'm now I'm. It's been long enough.

Man I used to draw so much as a kid, coming from a lower end family it was really all I had. Once I made it to like 6th grade and started feeling depressed and annoyed with everything I just gave up on it. I did a few things once in a while, but nothing big, like I used to. Just recently I felt an urge to draw, and made it to this video. It made me feel less alone.

Watching you always inspires me to pick up the pencil and draw. Lately I haven't had much time to do what I want, I've had many school assignments, and when I get free time, I make assignments for my sister's uni classmates, like a huge calendar for the classroom and stands for presentations, they pay me, and I need the money for art supplies, but I'm craving a moment to work on my own projects. When I'm finally free, I watch RUclips or stress over how will I be able to go to art school instead of working on my things. Thank you for this video, right now I'm in a moment of relax because I didn't go to school (my bff hurt my eye yesterday and it's aching), and you just made me want to pick up the pencil, without pressure. I haven’t seriously drawn in a year, mostly because I reached a block in my progress and just lost all inspiration and drive to draw and be creative in general. It’s been a struggle because art is such a huge part of my identity and I feel like I’m not a person without it. I’ve tried getting back into it a few times but really I was forcing myself to do it and it never stuck to me as it did before. But recently I’ve been much more inspired to get back into it so hopefully things will turn out good.

I have been avoiding it like the plague and feeling frustrated with myself because I'm afraid my passion is gone. There are times when I feel a small spark, but then I push it away because I don't want to expose myself.
But this video is helping me see that I'm afraid of failure. I'm afraid of feeling the rust and drawing something that isn't as good as it use to be. But also, if I don't start, I'll always stay rusty. Thank you for this video. Time to take it slow and regain my passion. I know it's still in me.

I believe in you! C: And just remember that the most important thing about art is having fun and to relax. 😊 Best wishes!

I love everything you do. Your style is so adorable. I haven’t drawn in probably 2 years now. I just recently hauled and hoarded a lotttttt of art supplies and I’m telling myself I need to draw again. Hopefully every day even if it’s just doodles.

So reassuring to hear your struggles with getting back into drawing and your wonderful advice on how to overcome them. As an occasional doodler, I often find getting back into drawing to be something so difficult when it should be pleasurable! To be comfortable with mistakes is the goal! Thank you for the video and would love more of you drawing please. Also your cat is the cutest ❤️

Thank you so much for this video. For some reason it feels like sometimes as an artist you look at all the amazing artists and illustrators out there and there amazing work and not be disheartened and feel like they never struggle. And it's good to know that other artists struggle with this as I struggle a lot with perfectionism in my work and I love 'embrace the awkwardness!' ❤️ love this vid and all your vids.

I really needed a video like this. Thank you for creating this because I haven't drawn in so long and my abilities as an artist has deteriorated over time. I recently got into sports, video games, trying to change myself to make new friends, and started studying more that I haven't taken much time to think about my art. Now here I am. My sports season is over, I beaten all my video games, I'm alone, and schools out, now I'm just here with an endless spacious amount of time and this is when I saw my pencil and paper again. And when I drew again, I remember why i love it but my skill is not what it used to be and it hurts to see that.I wish that I could just talk about art with someone, I miss those times of my life.

Gracias por compartir estos procesos. Yo he estado casi tres años sin dibujar.

Hi! Thank you so much. I actually sat down and drew something moderately cute while listening to your video. Thank you again :)

I just wanted to say that I relate... SO much (!) to what you said! I'm a horribly strict perfectionalist with terrible self-esteem and unrealistically high expectations for myself. Its tiring and frustrating. I keep trying to perfect my sketchbook drawings, so if I draw something I don't like, I always go back later to change or correct it. I'm trying to stop doing it but self correction is like an addiction, apparently. Hard to get rid of. And acceptance of own mistakes is like a ghost... heard stories of its existence but I've never seen it myself so for all I know it might just not exist.
