    Congratulation! And YES I should warn also to avoid overtone singing during driving a vehicle because of generating altered states of conciousness AND there is the possibility to become addicted to Overtones because of several reasons

      There is nowhere else secluded enough. Besides, if I made it home after long nights of REAL altered states of consciousness I think I can handle a little breathing exercise during my commute.

      5 minutes too late XDDD I just came home from driving and tried to practice on the way due to the idea of having background noise helping to hear overtones better. I had to stop that attempt midway because I noticed that with all the singing and breathing it did something to me that normal singing does not. I guess I will resort to shower... Came here for the exact reason to find an amplification technique and I got exactly what I was searching for. You are a great help, thank you

    5. repeat what you have done to get the feeling of control and knowing
    6. try to meditate into the sound itself to know its nature
    7. feel the quality of every overtone and try to make a relationship with them
    8. Make long tones (one or two overtones per breath) so that the body can optimize the resonance chambers and sace the muscle positions
    9. Practise every day few minutes at least to built a new habit
    10. Ask yourself why do you like to sing overtones and find answers to motivate yourself

      Same. :d How do we get louder, haha?

  • @StimmlaborDe
    @StimmlaborDe  11 лет назад +28

    1. increase the loudness of your fundamental note and choose that one, which you can sing relaxed and strong in the same time.
    2. improve your perception through clear focussing your mind on listening
    3. Slow down your speed to change the sound. Try to stop the time
    4. Trust and enjoy what you already perceive. The rest will come soon.

    I don't wish to be flippant but some years ago I tried this when drunk (beer) and absolutely nailed it "accidentally". I mean, the harmonics were so strong that I kinda "scared" myself thinking I was summoning up some kind of spirits! Anyway, I'm back to try it sober and I ain't having so much luck this time lol .

    • @Blueswailer
      @Blueswailer 10 лет назад +7

      This literally happened to me when I was stoned one time and practicing overtone singing. I completely nailed producing a 'sygyt'-overtone for some seconds and startled myself like "Holy shit!", then I couldn't do it afterwards when specifically trying.

    • @giovannibortoluzzi1384
      @giovannibortoluzzi1384 10 лет назад +5

      does it still works even if your goal is mastering the entire overtone scale, with exercises and melody practicing?

    • @petesmith9472
      @petesmith9472 10 лет назад +4

      I think that after a few beers, it's late, you're relaxed....you're not trying too hard...breathing rate is lowered; I can give no other explanation. Before it seemed simple but now I find I am running out of breath. I might go back to the didgeridoo!

    • @tameretonpere2098

      Same with ketamina ^^ But I can still do it without now!
      But yes it is all about relaxing your muscles, and focus on what is happening deep inside your mouth, where the air splits between the noise and the nose, try to get the air out more through the nose :)

    I just stumbled upon this from having heard Avi in the a cappella group Pentatonix perform overtone singing. Miroslav, thank you so much for your clear, easy tutorial. I've been practicing for a few days and finally found a few "sweet spots" where the second and third harmonics shine through. Of course, my jaw is sore from basically singing all day, but I got it! You're awesome. :D
    EDIT: Nevermind, I've been starting at the fourth harmonic, it seems--I just found the third (octave + fifth up) and can't quite get down to the second...yet :)

    2. Hum a steady base note and allow the vibration to spread out through your whole body
    3. Choose a vowel and sing it loud and strong, but relaxed
    4. Practise to change one vowel into another in a gliding manner (try different vowels)
    5. Go back and forth between u and e so slow as you can and listen carefully to the stepwise change of the sound

    6. Try to reduce the speed more and more to hear the
    subtle jumps of the harmonics better and better
    7. Stop the flow of time like a film and sing a steady base note AND a steady overtone in the same time
    8. Try to reproduce the changing of harmonics in small steps to learn the natural scale of harmonics
    9. Start to sing little melodies with the overtones
    10. Try to change the base note during singing overtones

    Hi Miroslav,
    I am getting good resonance on all the notes you sang except the one at 4:13 (the highest one). I have tried every E vowel mouth shape and tongue positions but I just can not get a good sustained resonance. Sometimes it even sounds like my fundamental will go out of pitch when trying to resonate that note. It seems even when I try hard to put strain on the E vowel mouth shape, I end up getting a slightly higher note instead. What would you suggest I try?

    Before I practice more, I have a question, once this becomes a natural and easy way to sing, is it still easy to sing in a "normal " way or will overtone singing become the default of one's vocal chords?

    • @StimmlaborDe
      @StimmlaborDe  8 лет назад +1

      you can easily switch between all the different singing styles, no worry ;-)
      AND singing overtones helps and supports the voice in general so that there will be a benefit for EVERY other singing technique because of the better listening on sound details as a basis for controlling and optimizing the vocal sound.Also the finest muscles are trained well through overtone singing. Additionally singing harmonics will calm your mind and reduce any stress in body, mind and voice. So you also can use it directly before a performance as a tool to prepare for your best singing ever...

    Also how come it is easy to get overtones a third apart, but difficult to get one a second apart? i.e (if i sing a C overtone the next higher one i can do is an E, and G and so on, but many notes are missing.)

    Does the tounge stay on the roof in the 'ihl' the entire exercise from U to E. Does it.change at all? Thank you for your help!

    • @StimmlaborDe
      @StimmlaborDe  8 лет назад +2

      yes, for this specific exercise the tounge stays to amplify the overtones, but for filtering overtones this position is not necessary. you can do it also without the special position of the tip of the tongue on the roof. The reason for using the tongue that way is to create an extra resonance chamber under the tongue to build a so called double resonator to extra amplify a specific overtone frequency. Good Luck and have fun!

    Do you keep your tongue relaxed when doing these exercises??? I have just discovered this type of singing and am already producing beautiful sounds. I just need to learn control :) These videos are wonderful and very helpful.

      Yes, the tongue should stay relaxed, even if it is touching the roof of the mouth

    that's fantastic! I've just come across Huun Huur Tu on here and I'm amazed, intrigued and lots of other words....I've noticed, though, that there are not many examples - on youtube - of females using this vocal technique. Is it easier etc. for men or just less usual for women? I've always been a singer 'of sorts' but I'm getting older and, to be honest, a little bored and would like a new challenge. Basically, what I am asking is: will it be harder to master because of my gender?

    Brilliant - I've tried for months to throat sing and failed. 2 minutes listening to your videos and I can now do it !

    I can do the overtones, & they're quite faint, but when I place my tongue in the L position I lose all overtone sound. I've tried placing my tongue in many different ways on the roof of the mouth. I've been practicing for 2 weeks, & I can't seem to get anywhere with it. I won't give up, but I can't shake the feeling I'm doing something wrong.

      Munchchewy0 so much passion should bring more success and fun for you, so I recommend to go back to the basic technique and improve the quality means clarity and volume of the overtones first. in my experience not every style fits to every person. Perhaps you will find another one which works better. I showed one here in my Channel called Gong-Technik but only in german. Try this one also. Or you book an individual session with a teacher in your region. Or a skype session with me which costs 1Euro per minute. You will find my name miroslavgrosser (Berlin) on skype. Wish you good luck with your singing

      Thank you for the feedback, I will definitely heed your advice! I wanted to learn the khoomei way of overtone, but I can't seem to find any good tutorials on that. When my next paycheck comes around I'll video you on skype. Cheers! :)

    so when you go from the oo to the ee vowl you go through all the overtones? using the tongue cupped to the roof of your mouth you can amplify the overtones. do you need to start with a bigger chamber (created by the tongue cup) when your in the oo vowel and bring the tongue back making the chamber smaller as you go to ee. or do you keep your tongue in the same place throughout and just adjust the vowel shape? thanks for any help :)

      we have to distinguish here 1. the filtering technique through the vowels AND 2. the amplifying technique with the tongue. We can filter the harmonics without the help from the tip of the tongue (try to hold it with the teeth and then sing the vowels so good as possible, you will hear overtones!) The visible part of the tongue for amplifying the filterted overtone changes the position with the change of an overtone, because it is a new frequency with another geometry needed for the perfect amplification. But the lower part of the tongue deep in your throat is responsible for the perfect filter. So you can practise both...

      MiroslavGrosser ah i see! i thought that the vowel sounds were created by lip movement rather than the bass of the tongue. thanks for clearing that up!

    in my experience the highest overtones are coming, if we are open ourselves on a very deep energetic and personal level, but not through trying harder. Please figure out for yourself how to relax more and more, enjoy and appreciate every single overtone you reach and then let the intent go to reach more. Often I had really quantum leaps in the quality AND quantity of my overtones during meditation or holiday or without any explaination like a gift of grace... In this sense: Surrender! M.G.

    can´t say it exactly, it is a question of trial and error. Just experiment with several positions and search for the best resonance experience. Hold the tongue not to fix, but flexible with the upper part on the roof of the mouth
