      @@jimhalpert2463 I get what you mean, but once CE reaped its rewards, Bungie wanted to dive deeper into the lore of the world they made, and they did a great job in Halo 2. The religious context and mass manipulation of the covenant via the prophets, namely Truth, is executed so well in the franchise's second installation. Yes, we did lose the aspect of mystery that was so inherent to the first game, but in its place, we gained a fantastic story with new characters to care about.

      In the og the activation denail explosion of the halo is larger and more fitting for an energy pulse that was seconds away from wiping out a quarter of a galaxy. Also, the slipspace exit of the carrier above new mombasa is more accurate ( altough the halo 3 odst version is the best ). Miranda was actually prettier in the original 2004 graphics, even with the lack of realism. The new cutscenes are a mixed bag. Blur improved some scenes but also downgraded the small memorable parts. Where the anniversary graphics shine is in the gameplay.

The Brute is surrounded by backup but he knows it won't stop Thel from tying him in a knot if he's touched.

    @Poet482 4 года назад +18

    Goddamn do I love Keith David's voice, and his performance here really is a standout role.
    In what is canonically a short period of time, the Arbiter goes from a supreme general zealot, to an outcast, to what's effectively a suicidal position as an agent for the highest rank in his galaxy-spanning religion, to a somber, sorrowful man/alien seeking retribution for all the atrocities he had committed under his former religions orders.
    This all happens very quickly in-universe, within a rushed game with very short cutscenes, and I buy the emotional arc Thel 'Vadam (Arbitor) goes through every step of the way due to David's performance, tied with the excellent soundtrack (and how that soundtrack is put to effective use due to great direction).
    Even from when I was quite young and didn't quite understand the story (being around 10 or 11), I remember how I felt when I first heard his line at 45:18. It holds up very, very well even upon taking a more critical eye to it as an adult due to how well that line read is. You feel Thel's entire quest summed up in a single line. I just realized this, but he's expressing the exact qualities the "prophets" claim to represent! Truth, Regret, and Mercy (towards his reluctant, misled enemy at the moment, the brutes led by Tartarus). You can feel all these and also a hearty amount of sorrow in his words. Like hearing the monitor blantanty say its mission statement aloud really solidified in his heart how wrong this all was, and that he was saying that all the covenant were betrayed as a means of making it seem more real to himself, as well as an attempt to convince Tartarus.
    Too bad Tartarus is too blind to see the truth.

    • @hans953
      @hans953 7 месяцев назад +2

      Completely agree apart from the point that Tartarus was too blind to see. At 45:25, he understands very well the truth about the nature of the rings but like many zealots, he can't bring himself to deal with the implication that he believed in a lie and that all he ever accomplished in his life (joining the Convenant, leading the Brutes and usurping the Elites' place by the Prophets' side) means nothing and so he doubles down. Instead of stopping what he's doing he performs a last-ditch effort to activate the rings and commence the Great Journey. It's an emotional, not a logical reaction and in this, Tartarus shows very much human-like characteristics. History's replete of people who killed and died in the name of lies and myths and the Convenant is no different. Even the Prophet of Truth, who knows more about the Forerunners and mankind than most, and should have at least an inkling as to the rings' true purpose, persists against better judgment in his belief in the salvation of the rings, as evidenced right before his death in Halo 3 ('Can you see Arbiter, the moment of salvation is at hand.' 'It will not last.' 'Your kind never believed in the promise of the sacred ring.') It really is a testament to how good the dialogue and writing was in the original trilogy.

In this case, Halo 2 benefited from being a game that filled the rising action of the trilogy, so everything given in these cutscenes were something to sit at the tip of your seat for, because anything could happen at any moment. In Halo 4, the cutscenes were movie-like similar to here, but we were basically told much before the game came out, and we expected many things.

But the way they used Halo CE's story and universe and expanded on it is what made this game so great. This is what sparked the lore explosion, you see a clip of the fall of Reach, then you see the covenant hierarchy, the power struggle between the Eiltes and the Brutes, there's a side by side comparison of Master Chief and the Arbiter, and to top it off the dialouge made this game feel like a freaking movie! the cinematography here is better than what has been shown in both tec demo and the e3 trailer of halo infinite. I don't mean graphics or textures or artstyle, I simply mean how it is scripted, how scenes are set, how the camera is positioned and how calm the animations look.

    Wow, i forgot how good the original looked for a 2004 game, and the voice acting and microphone quality is still amazing.

    Notice the panic room that the Heretic Leader hid in leads to an airlock and ledge outside, where a ship could come evacuate them, so they (the builders in event of Flood outbreak in the lab) weren't trapped in there. If you didn't know what their intent was and what was housed there, you may have missed the detail in how that station was designed.

    Blur studios did amazing work and made the best custscenes in Halo history. It's good to catalogue the original though, as it was still amazing enough for Steven Spielberg to want to make a movie out of it. I do think some scenes are better in original too, specifically with the facial expressions of the Covenant.

    Man looking back, the sounds were just all over the place. Things that should be metal sound like plastic and Chief moving sounds like rubber and leather. My friend the other day also mentioned how the original SMG firing sounds like someone rapidly tapping their fingers on a table. But ya gotta respect the classics.
