  • It was built nearly a century ago as one of the most innovative mega projects of its time.
    The 32-kilometre Enclosure Dam in the Netherlands has served to protect the nation from the sea.
    But now, rising water levels and increasing storms mean the government is having to enhance the structure.
    Al Jazeera’s Step Vaessen reports from the Affslow dyke Afsluitdijk (af-slow-dyke) in the Netherlands.

    The change in the sea mannerism should also initiate change of structure of the dam incorporating furure change in the ocean.

    The Dutch plan to wall off the north sea and English channel would be amazing. It probably take a hundred years for all that salt water to turn into fresh water.

      Not 'the Dutch' some engineers proposing a possible solution to a worst case scenario if sea levels keep rising. Closing the North Sea /channel would be a economic disaster but not as bad as letting countries get flooded.

      @@MargaritaMagdalena Because fresh water constantly flows in the ocean from the continent, so if you cut the North Sea from the rest of the ocean, then it will become fresh water (after a very long time)

      That idea would be absurd. It would affect the ocean currents that flows through the artic down the north sea to the baltics. The consequences of it would be unpredictable

      Well, some Dutch engineers once brought up the plan to dam the entire north and Baltic sea off. Basically creating a dam from Scotland to Norway and from England to France. But those kind of projects would have too high of a risk

      Yes, you are right. The sea will rise up to 60 meters and stay at that level for about 300-350 years before receding again. No problemo, marine life goes on.

      Both are happening now. The sea is rising 1. because the oceans are warming and expanding as a result, 2. the ice is melting rapidly in Greenland, Antarctica and the Hymalaja. This melting process will cause land under Greenland and Antarctica to rise due to the loss of the weight of the land ice.
