- Where it all started...well the third time it all started! I hope you enjoy this...as you may know, I have the rights to this classic show, so let's get those views and show the suits that this classic game is still fun! Tell your friends....WHEW!
Tom Kennedy could host ANY game show well!
R.I.P. Tom Kennedy and Jay Wolpert!
Whew! As in, I'm sure relieved they changed the music! Glad to get a look at the pilot regardless. Thanks Wink!
@@brimer735uu8 Not soon enough!
I love Maggie Brown! Such a great pilot contestant.
Yet another appearance by everyone's favorite game show pilot fixture: Maggie Brown.
RIP Jay Wolpert, you mad genius of the game show. 💜
I went to see "WHEW" in person at CBS TV CITY and it was fun to be there. Did you know they taped in the Price is Right studio. Wink also taped Gambit as well in the same studio. A very versatile studio.
indeed with so many studios CBS 33 has been used for so many shows throughout the years but that's so cool you got to see a show there
Matt Hartley Jr Do you remember the players to the best of your knowledge? I’d love to see if that episode is in existence.
Every episode exists!
Wink Martindale So they do. Maybe there’ll be a few more uploaded in due time. Also, in the days of Tic Tac Dough, you were the best in those days.
@@WinkMartindaleGames Wink I went to see in the same studio the pilots for Barry Enright's "Double Cross" and in the same studio a game show pilot for "Initial Reaction".
Sorry both didn't sell. Double Cross was like Joker's Wild.
I’d love to see this and $ale of the Century return as a daily half-hour show on NBC.
Not gonna happen.
@@LeoVargas94Oficial Yes, and by the way...Their was a revival in the late 2000's under the name Temptation. The version down under was much better in the Temptation incarnation.
If they recreate this game, they should keep the villains at they are.
NBC getting back into the business of airing morning games shows? I'm sure Al Roker and Hoda Kotb would love that.
It's interesting how the pilot had different music and the main game board has a different color scheme, but other than that, the game appears to be very much like it ended up in regular play. I was so fascinated and obsessed with this particular show back in 1979, and I was honored to be on a replica of it at TCONA in 2016 and 2017, and that was a lifelong fantasy of mine.
With today’s technology, you could make this game even better. Just have the blocker punch up the blocks on a touchscreen. Then you don’t have to switch out question boards since it would all be computerized.
Hey, Maggie Brown hey. She has been “champion” more times than I can count
I love You Tube so much!!!! For some reason I have always remembered this show. It was one of my favorites. I was a teenager when it was on, and would watch it during whatever school vacation it would have been. I never thought I'd run into it again! WOW. I'm so happy. This was back when parents would actually let kids be at home alone LOL. I loved watching game shows all morning during school vacations. I was an addict.
This game show has an awesome concept with the "blooper" aspect of it. :D
Thank you, Wink Martindale for convincing the copyright holder to allow Buzzr to show 'Whew!'!!
I remember watching this show as a kid and really enjoyed it. Thanks for posting this ultra-rare pilot, Wink!
You can see that Tom was playing with that Sony ECM-51 ("Bob Barker") microphone. It was at "Jim Perry" (medium) length at the first round and "Gene Rayburn" (full) length for the second round.
The changes made for the sold version is dramatically better.
Wink, I didn't know you had the rights. It IS time for a revival, just don't let the suits mess with the game.
ABC Summer Fun and Games, meet your new candidate.
I think Wink and Fremantle should talk...
This show would actually do better today with all the technology. The 80s would have ushered in cheaper television screens a la Tic Tac Dough's ability to handle computer screens and fonts/easier to have images and clues.
Maggie Brown sure was all over game shows in this time period.
Yeah with pilots they would use actors and audience applause tracks. They wouldn't be aired which is what makes seeing these a treat! How they differ between pilot test and actual series
I've never seen many editions of this amazing show as it was never broadcast here in the UK. I'm SO looking forward to seeing this pilot!
I'm surprised he used the Sony ECM-51 microphone in this pilot. I thought when he did the nighttime Price is Right was the only instance he uses it.
Cool video!
Maggie Brown, the Queen of pilot game shows. What’s interesting is she was better on pilot shows than playing the actually game shows
Ugh. So many interesting gameshows that got lost to the ages with little to no hope of modernization... I would love to see a modern take on Whew!...
Interesting to see the set tweaks (some good some eh) and the music tweaks (DEFINITELY good) between the pilot and actual show. And I swear, Maggie Brown never met a pilot she didn’t like. 😀
@@zachhoran I believe she was on the Second Chance pilot ;)
lobstertexas Very much was. I saw that pilot several times, even well before I saw it in full here on RUclips.
@@lobstertexas and the First PYL pilot.
@@lobstertexas & 80s the Press Your Luck pilot
I thought I've seen her elsewhere! She looks a little like Debralee Scott but can't be!
Same, you got the rights to this now, eh? Good to know.
So much to unpack here. First, always nice to see the Unsinkable Maggie Brown. Second, REALLY glad they remixed the theme for the series, this pilot version was a tough listen. Third, as far as I revival goes, I'm torn. I can never decide on any given day whether this show is too simple or too complicated. There's a lot to keep track of as you play, but yet it still flows well.
Either way, I'll still watch it. So what the hey, yeah, let's do it!
Gorgeous
Wink rules the world !! 😄
Thank you so much for posting the pilot episode of this witty and intriguing game show classic! "Whew!" reminds me a little of Tom Kennedy's other gem "Split Second" and I loved the former when I was a kid. And the opening/closing theme for the pilot reminds me, too, of "Dan August".
Oh Maggie... she's been in several pilots, including Press Your Luck
And "Second Chances", the precursor to PYL.
@@trekadam30 (A) It was Second Chance and (B) It seems every pilot she's done got sold. Wonder what she's doing these days?
She’s still in the metal making business. There’s a recent interview on RUclips
This show is now on buzzr weekdays at 4 pm est
The theme song sound like they getting away with a crime! 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
More like a 70s cop show lol
My word! Maggie certainly was intense
Maggie's a hoot. I picture her having gotten into a few bar brawls in her life.
The NCAA used this theme music during its highlight package for the 1978 men's lacrosse national championship game (Johns Hopkins vs. Cornell).
My favorite game of all time! So happy they changed the music and the set for the broadcast episodes. Now I have to watch a broadcast episode to see the great changes.
Thanks for posting this, Wink. Whew! was the game show that got me hooked to game shows. I remember a 5 year old me watching this for the first time, and from then on I was hooked. Interesting to see the changes from the pilot to the version that went to air, glad they jazzed up the theme song in between.
Awesome. I hadn't thought of this show for years. Glad to see it again. Bring it back!
My goodness, was Rod Roddy subdued as an announcer here!
If you think he's subdued here, you should hear him on "Soap."
@@VectraQS In contrast, Tom was VERY enthusiastic as host! Too much so IMO, shouting out literally every question in the whole show was overdoing it to say the least. That by itself made getting through it kinda tough, and I say that as someone who respects Tom and his work a lot.
@@VectraQS That was Rod? I never knew that.
@@VectraQS That is true in the earlier episodes of "Soap." In later episodes, Rod's actually closer to his game show announcing persona. It's no coincidence that the change began when he was announcing for "Whew!" There are a couple of episodes of "Soap" from 1979 where one of the characters watched a game show. Rod announces in his "Soap" voice "You can win..." then switches to his game show voice "...A NEW CARRRR!"
Yeah he was so subdued that I thought it Bob Hilton for a minute.
Besides the set differences (including lights on the Charger's podium which counted down the block), the champion chose first as opposed to the challenger and the bloopers weren't underlined. Also, Tom used a microphone during the front game.
Stay Tuned for The Price is Right following the News on most of these CBS Stations.
Wink if you can combine the main game from "Whew" with the bonus game from "Pitfall", you'll have an awesome show on your hands!
Wink thanks for posting
Maggie Brown: Queen of Game Show Pilots.
Wink, This pilot wasn't just aired on your 45th Birthday, but it was also Rod Roddy's 1st role as an announcer on game shows.
What? Maggie Brown is in this pilot?
Maggie Brown, the Queen of Game Show Pilots
Maggie Brown was a game show contestant legend. Split Second, then Whew! pilot, and Press Your Luck pilot that I know of.
This needs a revival!
They kept calling it “our show” because no one could pronounce “Whew!” LOL!
"Whew!" is the only game show in which the title is an interjection.
Interesting that there was no commercial break between round 2 and the tie-breaker. They probably just did a stop-down to allow the backstage crew to load the board, and edited.
The director would do Press Your Luck a few years later.
Maggie faced the Gauntlet of Villains AND the whammies.
Whew!...I think it was an outrageously crazy game...#ILovedThat! #ABCBringItBack!!!
Maggie looks like a gal who knows how to have a good time-good for her!
Best thing about this show was Tom Kennedy and Rod Roddy. Alan Thicke's awesome theme added to the excitement when the program made it to CBS. However I can't think of any other host that could make this work. At least not out of all the hosts available for such a job today. This is like the Gilligan's Island of game shows. It was great for a short amount of time with the original people in it's original form, but not many people would be clamoring over a new version today. Just let it be and make it possible for people to see the original. Any other version would fail in comparison. Holding onto the ownership of this show for bragging rights isn't going to put a single dime in anyone's pocket. SELL SELL SELL. Maybe in 10 years when nothing happens with this, you'll realize that I am right.
Glad you're not a network executive we're pitching! :D
@@jrjgames LOL. Well I love game shows and I wouldn't even buy this show. I just don't believe the numbers would be there. Hopefully you deal with nicer people at the the networks than me.
Hanna Barbera doing the animation in the beginning is actually pretty impressive for a game show back in 1978!
Looks like there weren’t many major changes from the pilot: Some color changes, the “Longshot” option was added, podium changes, underlining the “wrong” word(s), dark background, etc. but the rules and such seem to be almost identical to what ended up produced.
I actually found out in your “WHAT?!?” video that Maggie Brown from both the Second Chance and Press Your Luck pilot made an appearance on this show.
Maggie Brown vs. Jack Campion would have been perfect
I was wondering why she looked familiar.
All 3 of those directed by..... Bill Carruthers....
Ok, so let’s see: her record now is 4-2 (Maggie was the returning champion)
I actually like this! If it had a few tweaks (the name for one, and some minor modifications to game play) I'd totally watch this!
It's a good thing they added the long shot
Do you know if this pilot was taped at CBS Television City or at CBS Studio Center/Old Republic Studios? It seemed to me the studio looked a lot bigger than it did when it went to series at the 33/Barker studio? I also noticed they used a cardboard cue card for the slate instead of a chalk slate they would normally use at TV City.
The pilot is going to air on Buzzr starting next month.
I had no idea Maggie Brown was in it, too. But... will there be a reboot of Classic Concentration in the future? 36 numbered squares, 4 contestants in a tournament bracket, where one player will try to win a jackpot of no less than $250,000?
With the intelligence I see in the streets these days, I'd be shocked if the layman could even solve a board with 20 numbers.
I remember this.
Never understood why the bonus game was for $25,000, considering that was the limit for CBS shows at the time
I'm guessing CBS wanted a big money game show for their daytime lineup. Also, by this point, while players still retired at $25,000, they were allowed to keep up to $35,000.
One question to Wink now, was Maggie used for a lot of game show pilot episodes? She did the pilot episode to Press Your Luck.
I wish they would've left the swirl lights on the floor!
I like theme that made it to air instead of the pilot
I hope a pilot of Sale of the Century (80’s) will resurface. I’m kinda curious to know if Rod Roddy announced that one.
If you have the rights to the show, you need to bring it back. This could sell in 2020!
Am I the only one who wishes that the charging theme should be resynced for “Lazer Pulse II”?
Thanks, Wink! It would be incredible to see you remount Whew! Keep the set, villains and music the same as what aired. Maybe come up with a new name, though.
One idea for a change: Make it a solo game. Blocks would be placed randomly offstage, saving time each show. Charging one board wins you a prize, which can then be risked to clear more boards and reach a grand prize, as on Seven Keys and Sale of the Century.
@6:12 I guess you REALLY HAVE TOO CALL...LONGSHOT!
No longshot used in this pilot. Did the other two have any?
I have a feeling they were supposed to do that in game 1, but the contestant forgot to call for it, so they had to go with what they had.
Is there footage of the first and the second pilot? Also, were the first and second pilot's shown on BUZZR or just this pilot?
I like to know that too!
So got to 10 with like 20 weds left so she could of just sat there and got the win anyway
Maggie Brown? How many game shows was this woman on? LOL! Talk about a game show contestant celebrity.
Makes me wonder how the pilots changed from v1, v2, v3???
May we pilot 2 of whammy
Wonder what Pilots 1 & 2 looked like???
I could see this show working in today's age, especially with the amount of commercial time that networks request. However, would you keep the straddle format, or like the celebrity version, try to self contain it with a bonus charging round if a contestant sweeps? Somehow I think the suits would find a way to guarantee three rounds, even if it meant play for high dollar amount (in which some champs would end up losing)...
They should have used this music for the original. I like this pilot better than the original.
@8:57 having a meltdown
Wink , in a pilot episode as this ,how do they determine who is champion and who is challenger. Thanks for this post
Although I'm not Wink, in a pilot episode, the contestants are paid actors/actresses, so the production staff simply assigns them the role. It's an acting salary to act as the contestant; they don't get any of the announced prizes. This is so the networks can see the show in action when choosing to buy it and place it on their lineup.
@@wschmrdr thanks for the info ,I have often wondered about that
How many pilots did they do?
Maggie reminds me of Janis Joplin as a house wife
Wink. Do yourself a favor and sell the rights to Fremantle. That way you get paid and Fremantle can share this quirky series with America on their game show channel Buzzr. Otherwise this is just going to be one of those series that collects dust in a vault and nobody will ever see it again. It's already been off the air for 41 years. It wasn't even popular when it was originally on CBS. It has a small cult following, but not nearly enough for them to think about making new episodes. Use this show as a cash grab. Fremantle will give you something for it I'm sure. Then at least you can feel good that people will enjoy it.
FM doesn't need to own everything! ;)
@@WinkMartindaleGames Well at least they have a channel where people could enjoy the show. Otherwise it's just going to collect a bunch of dust like Jack Clark's Crosswits and a hundred other game shows that will never be seen again. Networks barely want to revive a successful show like Tic Tac Dough. Slim to no chance of reviving a show that was on life support for a year.
@@WinkMartindaleGames Absolutely right Wink! Don't sell it outright, but hopefully you can lease or contract it out in some venue. Please just let us see it! I'm THRILLED that you confirmed that every episode exists. So many game shows from the 70's were wiped simply because videotape was reusable. Thank goodness this show was not. This show broke ground by being the first network game show to break the fourth wall by showing all the cameras and lights on the wide bumper shots. I love that. Now of course every show does it. I was 17 when this show aired; my teacher in 11th grade was so cool she let us watch it in the classroom for our media studies class. She obviously knew a great production when she saw one!
Was going to say... Wink's quite the good producer in and of himself. He can probably do a better job than that flashy Fremantle stuff.
@@WinkMartindaleGames I don't mind you keeping these things from being sold off to someone bigger, sometimes we need a little competition.
Anyone know what was in pilots 1 and 2?
Rules are a little too complicated and take too long to understand and explain. Flow of show is also a bit too strained at times. Also not enough to the show here really besides just answer a twisted question properly. Just needs more for me I guess. Good to see an episode of "Whew" again as it has been awhile but I never liked the show for these and other reasons.
It's not hard at all. The challenger decides to block or charge in Round 1, in Round 2 they switch and if Round 3 is necessary, the champion chooses whether to block or charge.
The blocker places 6 blocks with no more than 3 on any level except level 6 which s/he can only place one block.
The charger has to call a level and amount, if they get the blooper there's one word that's wrong and s/he has to fix it, if a block comes up, the charger is stopped for 5 seconds.
A correct answer or if there's nowhere else to go advances a level, an incorrect answer keeps the charger on that level. If the charger climbs the 6 levels in time, the charger wins. If the time runs out, the blocker wins.
If the charger is about to lose, s/he can call "Longshot" which must be said before the clock hits zero. The longshot can't be said if you're already on level 6 or during the time the charger serves for a block, but can be said any other time. The blocker puts an extra block on level 6 and the charger has to pick one of the three amounts. If a block comes up, the blocker wins, if the blooper comes up and the question is answered correctly, the charger wins. If the blooper is answered wrong, the blocker wins, hence the name "Longshot".
The winner gets all the money from either correct answers or the blocks they placed, and two out of three rounds wins the game, and goes to the bonus game.
The bonus game is a simple "Answer 10 questions in 60 seconds" round with 1 second added for every $100 won in the main game.
Easy. This game show aired when i was 7 and I understood the rules.
what year is this?
This pilot was taped in December 1978; the series premiered, though, in April 1979.
When a game show requires 4 minutes to explain the (rather asinine) rules, I say “Whew” I’m glad this wasn’t a thing. But it was super cool to see this episode.
This sort of reminds me of Press Your Luck but at least Whew does not suck as Press Your Luck. I mean, Press Your Luck really sucks.
