  • This is becoming an interesting Video! This started out to be one thing. And that was about the Oyen Digital MiniPro RAID V3. This has turned out to be instead a troubleshooting Video! When We started this process We were Answering a Question from Bob, one of You, one of Our Subscribers asking Us to Test the Device! And that's what We've been doing! Suffice to say, this Device has a problem. I like the Design, the Layout, the Documentation but as We've been watching the way the Device behaves, for those of You willing to watch the Video and go through this, I hope this is a learning Process. Bob needs to return this Unit for another one! And We'll go through the Procedures again. Modes of Operation: JBOD - exFAT (Default), RAID 0, RAID 1 and BIG Mode (Concatenation or Sequential Disk 1 to Disk 2). Passive Cooling. Bus or A/C Powered. A/C Adapter included. 10Gbps USB-C and Thunderbolt compatible. Possible to Rackmount 2 Units Side by Side but NOT Connected to each other! One Feature missing, no Kensington Cable Lock Slot!

Hi BuildOrBuy, I stumbled across something today which seems is related to the issues you are observing. As I previously mentioned, I own 4 of these Oyen Digital cases configured as RAID0. I was tidying up the routing of my USB cables today and upon re-connection I ran Speed tests with CrystalDiskMark on each drive. On a couple of the drives, I noticed slower write speeds than expected. Very much on par with what you have shown around the 23min mark of your vid. What I discovered is the when you use the supplied USB-A to USB-C cables, the orientation of the C side of the cable makes a difference. So I ran the speed test, observed slow write speeds. I then flipped the orientation of the C side of the cable 180 degrees and observed write speeds as I would expect. The tests were repeatable of flipping the orientation of the C side of the cable which connects to the case. I now put labels on my cables so I know which side is the top side of the cable. If you still have one of these cases, give that a try.

      Hi rednroll1,
Welcome! Glad You've brought that up! As a User, ok. We could live with it. For a Client, not ok. A bad cable on a product like this is bad quality control. Oyen Digital needs to address that! However, this is not exclusive to Oyen Digital. This is a major design flaw with USB-C that's going to get worse as everything is moving to USB-C! We do not recommend USB-C Cables due to this major design Deficiency. We reference that to a Smartphone cable. Those USB-C Cables don't last through repeated use! And now We're seeing 20Gbps USB-C 2X2 and USB4 40Gbps (Thunderbolt 4) implementations. Problematic! Appreciate Your Comments! Keep Us Posted on Your Experiences with the Device please! Thanks for Sharing!

Agree on your hypothesis initially, bad drive. Yea, you shouldn't have to go through all this just to get it working. I wouldn't trust this with my data. Cheers

      Hi MaK aTTaK,
Crazy, right! Can You imagine the average User getting hold of something like this and not bothering to Test and Verify and wondering what'sgoing on. Nuts on that! A bad controller on the SATA3 SSD, possibly. Definitely a quality control issue. We're going to look at another one of same Brand and Model. And We'll document the whole process! We learned a lot from this experience. 3 days of learning! I was eager to Discuss the Bridge chip but... next one, hopefully! We shall see!

I currently own (4) of these Oyen Digital cases, all configured in RAID0. 3 of them I'm using (2)Seagate 5TB 2.5" 5400 RPM HDDs and the 4th with (2)SanDisk 1TB 2.5" Ultra SSDs. I have not experienced the problems you're observing. Likely you have a bad drive like you speculate, or a one-off bad enclosure. I also own multiple other dual RAID0 cases from Acasis, Vantec, CableMatters, and MediaSonic(3.5in dual). After about a year of using all these devices in RAID0, I have to say Oyen Digital's case has so far been the most reliable of the bunch. The Acasis and Vantec I would not recommend. I own (3) of the Vantec Nexstar GX cases in RAID0 config and one has failed after 3 months of light use, drives tested fine and others have often disconnects. Acasis has config bugs. CableMatters case, I only own 1 but has been reliable with dual Samsung QVO SSDs. MediaSonic has worked well also but has a loud fan but great for the price.

      Hi rednroll1,
Welcome! Interesting. This was Our 2nd Device of same but with better Results. Something is off kilter with the Enclosure. Passing SMART and TRIM on 1 Drive but not both is odd. Plus in RAID, neither Drive could be seen from Samsung Magician Control Panel. Great design! And to add to that, the Chipset is ASMedia who happens to have helped AMD develop the X670E Family of Chipsets for the new AM5 7000 CPUs! Curios. Thanks for Sharing!

I’ll add, I noticed you are connecting to a USB 3.2 Gen 2 port. My laptop I’m connecting to has USB-C 3.1 Gen1 so I’m unable to get the full potential speeds of interfacing with a Gen 2 port with my SSDs. Maybe that’s the difference? If you have any slower Gen 1 ports would be interesting to learn if you get different results. One of reasons I went with this case was in hopes I would get the speed increase benefits when I eventually upgrade my laptop with one with a Gen2 or faster usb port.

@@BuildOrBuy Some potential config differences. My laptop’s port is USB-C gen1 compared to yours is USB 3.2 Gen2 and all my drives are NTFS formatted. Hope I don’t see bad results when upgrading my laptop with faster USB port.

      Hi@@rednroll1,
Very good question. The results We've achieved on this 2nd Unit are vastly better than the 1st Unit. However, still not a good performance measure according to the Spec for BOTH Drives in RAID 1. Too slow! Appears there's a problem with the 2nd Drive through the ASMedia chipset for whatever reason. We're also not able to see both Drives with Samsung Magician Control Panel through either RAID configuration. Only in JBOD.
Aside note about the USB Ports, USB-C can be 5Gbps, 10Gbps, 20Gbps or 40Gbps. And with USB4 up to 80Gbps on PCIe 4.0 instead of the previous or current 40Gbps which is based on PCIe 3.0. As always, no matter what We think, We always need to Test and Verify. Results can vary. And as You have pointed out, a lot depends upon those USB-C Ports.
Looking back We had connection issues with USB 3.0. Originally, USB 3.0 could only handle Burst mode Bandwidth and NOT actual Streaming Throughput Bandwidth. What would happen? Devices would disconnect. Those USB 3.0 Ports would go offline. Solution? We'd have to reboot to get them back. That was the short term Solution. Two Options. Use USB 2.0 if possible or... The better long term Solution for a Desktop was an add in card with Renesis Chipset which could handle Sustained Streaming Throughput Bandwidth. Hassle! Now here We are with USB-C Bandwidth issues. Test and Verify! Hope those clarifications help!

      Hi@@rednroll1,
Are We talking a new Laptop? You'll know to double check everything and Test and Verify before signing off on everything as accepted to be acceptable! There are Pros and Cons to NTFS vs exFAT. One issue We use to spend a lot of time talking about during Our Live Meetings was Taking Ownership of NTFS Drives moved from one Computer to another. We had a Reg file We'd import to enable that feature with a right click menu for quick and easy access. Microsoft recommends exFAT for Removable Media. Hope that helps!

These issues occurred for me when using the DC power adapter while accidentally leaving the unit's power selection on USB (instead of DC). When connecting only using the USB cable (for both data and power), RAID0 was fine. Looks like you had it set to DC, so maybe there's a deeper issue with the power adapter. Might be worth trying USB only.

Hi, thanks for both videos I was curious about this device.
About the smart issues and the benchmarks I'd like to point out a couple of things.
    1. The chipset in these units are not always able to rely smart data reliably in all configurations.
    2. The version of CrystalDiskMark used by the manufacturer is 5.1.0. Between version 5.x and version 8.x the developer changed the block sizes and default benchmark settings, so to compare apples to apples one would need to run the tests using at least the same major releases.
Said that, I just subscribed. 🙂

Glad You've brought that up! We've been asked before why not upgrade the program. So We did and here We are. Apples and Oranges! As You have Pointed out, Chipsets Rule! And We're seeing more ASMedia Chipset usage now than ever before with AMD working in conjunction with ASMedia on their new Dual Chipset Chips and USB4! Let's hope ASMedia gets better at this! Not like a Broadcom Chipset! Appreciate Your Comments!

      Hi Mike Quinton,
Or an IC on the PCB. Can You imagine the average User not testing before implementing a Device like this. If the Vendor had sent the Device, We'd be more inclined to open the Device and visually inspect. Based now on last 5 or 6 Devices, if We going to have to start inspecting PCBs, We're going to need a Microscope. And that was my other concern. Since this was a Client Device, send it back and We'll try another one! And hopefully from a different batch! If We have to open the next one, We'll be looking for any identifying marking for a batch number. We had to share this! Great concept!

Just finished watching your video a few times. Interesting! What is the power draw? Just asking because some external devices like the blacx dual thermaltake disk docking station has power drops when you put two hhd in and accessing at same time. This would cause the drives to intermittently drop connection corrupting drives at random. So the hypothesis here would be removing one drive to see if it would fix the other drive issues. Probably not a problem because they are ssd not hhd and the power requirement is way way lower. Another thing is TRIM

    • @BuildOrBuy
      @BuildOrBuy  Год назад +2

      Hi MaK aTTaK,
Very good point about Power! You're right! However, We were using the wall wart and not USB-C Power for which was of great concern for that fact!
TRIM, Another great point We did not get to address. The Bridge chip passes that capability through however, the File Format is the next choice. With NTFS We get TRIM. I'm not certain with exFAT that's possible. And Yes We Defaulted to NTFS for expediency but the request was for exFAT. Pros and Cons both ways Choices and Decisions We need to mention on the next round! I've never encountered a Device to give so much grief! Definitely faulty. Eager to try another one!
Client picked this up today and returned! He asked if We should try another one or something else. My suggestion let's try one more and see. If the next one behaves the same, We'll remove the SSDs and Test separately and individually. I'm curious and fascinated! Results! Appreciate Your Comments! Thanks for Watching!

I couldn't find a first video on this that you referred to. Link?
I wouldn't expect 2 drives to show in HWMonitor with a RAID 1(Mirror). It's abstracted to only report as 1 drive. HWM usually doesn't report SMART at all with RAID. I'm surprised Samsung magician even saw the drives at all. It doesn't on Intel or AMD RAID on any of my systems.
I wonder if the exFAT files system had anything to do with the failures in RAID 0?

    • @BuildOrBuy
      @BuildOrBuy  Год назад +2

      Hi £ordÇhariot,
Sorry about that! After going through the Data, We decided to just show this part and make the other part an Unboxing Video on a 2nd Device which the Client will Order. Better use of everyone's time! Something is definitely off. Same here! Never seen such a mess that's why We had to share this Video! This was Day 2 of 3 days of Filming of about 6 hours or so. Crazy Results for a High Performance Device! Intel RST on RAID 0 only according to Intel will pass through SMART but not on any other configurations. And You're right, not at all on AMD RAID of any kind as of yet!
We, like You, had more Questions than Answers. Never seen anything like this one before! If the next Device goes the same way, then We'll remove these SSDs and Test them individually and also Swap them in their Housing to check the Bridge Chip. We learned a lot with this one! And no Trouble Shooting FAQ from Oyen Digital either. Most curious!
This was suppose to be a simple Unboxing instead of a Troubleshooting Video! And timely to cover a High Performance 10Gbps USB-C Device before We get into 20Gbps USB-C! And We did not even get to try the Oyen Digital MiniPro RAID V3 on the Thunderbolt Ports! Hope to do just that on the next one if possible! Thanks for Your Feedback!
