I have watched a few of these videos before attempting my own repair, but this one had the best close ups and complete verbal explanations of each step of the process. You’ve saved me time and money. Thank you
Just use common sense "we aren't working on the Space Shuttle". Love it. Thanks for all you have done in the small engine community. I mean in Don. You are a Pioneer
You are correct that anyone can do this repair. Your experience and knowledge (you must've seen thousands of outdoor power equipment engines!) give us great advice. Thanks!!!
Thanks mate. Spot on. Exactly the problem with my B&S mower. Used your tips to pull it apart. Flywheel key was completely sheared off and the shaft and flywheel were 35 degrees out of alignment. No wonder it wouldn't start! Just need to pop in a new alignment key and put it back together now. You're a legend!
Hey Don, I don't know if you read comments on old videos, but a big thanks from me on this one. When I saw that the key on my B&S mower engine was sheared, I remembered your tip of threading the holes in the flywheel so you could use a puller to get it off. Luckily the flywheel on my motor only had two holes, so it was easy to jury-rig a puller from a steel bar.
Always appreciate your very well presented instructional videos. Clear, to the point, and correct. Thank you for the time and money you have saved me over the years. Thank you for taking your time to share your knowledge with all of us. My absolute first choice when faced with a task of which I have no shame to admit, I haven't a clue where to begin. Awesome! Hope you never get tired of doing what you do. Be well.
Perfect diagnostic Donny! We need to check the basics before spend 2 or 3 hrs to find out is another issue. When working with planes I have seen people removing the entire electrical system just to find out is only a switch problem! Keep posting more videos like that ....
Great video. Back to basics. Good advice on the little brake pad and closing the bail. I broke one on my first Tecumseh flywheel key years and years ago.
Hi Don, were having a longer mowing season this year in Oklahoma , here we are in the middle of September and all is still green. In our normal weather we are usually browned out by the end of July . But even now all in thick rich green. Thumbs up my friend . Bob / Okie.
Smashing tutorial :-D. I have used a large screw driver to apply a little bit of leverage under the flywheel, and in my case i used a copper hammer, it came loose on the second impact. No damage was done to the flywheel/magnets as i was carefull :-D
What does the flywheel brake do? Does it stall the mower when released or take drive away from the blade? Love the video. I learn something new each time
Great video. That's one thing I haven't checked so will tomorrow. Your very thorough so thank you. I hope I don't have to do that but I'm not sure what else I can do. It's a toro recycler of let with auto choke and the mower is not even trying to start yet after cleaning the carb and checking for spark. It all seems okay. The mower doesn't look very old and is self propelled. It would be nice to get it going.
Great vid as always. I just want to mention valves. I bought a used mower with a Kawi fj180v. That thing tore a tendon in my hand from kick back. The flywheel key was fine. The valves were way off. I adjusted them and had no more kickback.
I bet the diagnosis of the key needing to be replaced didn't come from the key itself but rather your experience with the mower kicking back when you tried to start it and that led to the diagnosis of the key having a visually minor bend to it. I think if you were a backyard mechanic trying to fix that mower you wouldn't be able to connect the look of the key to the running condition of the engine. great video leading the viewers form the kickback and then finding the reason for it. You are a great small engine "teacher" You would have been great in "shop class". :-)
Yok teach just like my Dad BLESS his soul and my shop teacher MR HANEY 40 some years ago ! VERY KNOWELEDGEABLE( I hope I spelled that right ) GOD Bless you Dony hope the wife feeling Good in these times . 666 OUT
Excellent Video Don, I, have a weed wacker with a similar problem where am getting kickback and hard to start can you highlight this problem for me Thanks.
Yes, that's exactly right. If the timing is severely off, the spark plug might fire and force the cylinder slightly backwards, but with a great amount of force. This is what causes the starter cord to be jerked out of your hand. Be careful! This could throw out your shoulder, elbow, or back if you don't let go of the handle.
I have a maruyama bc4250h bush cutter that kicks back when the magnet and coil meets. I've adjusted the air gap, cleaned the muffler internal but no luck. This doesn't happen when i remove the spark plug to test if it pulls back when cranked. Any ideas?
Take note, I thought I had the same problem then discovered the flywheel nut was torqued so lightly it could be almost loosen by fingers. Initial flywheel key didn't seem out of place or damaged so I tightened the flywheel nut to around 50 pounds. That did the trick.
I never realized how important pulling the plug wire was until a CR500 fired on a slight stroke of the kickstart. I was turning the engine over by hand.
Great video, but. In my case it wasn't the key, but rather loose valves. Adjusting that valves fixed the problem. And it was an arm breaker not just a little kickback. Thank for that video though.
Can the pull back from the cord be something other than a damaged key? I’ve never hit anything with my blade and after changing the front clip on a cub cadet I now have this pullback issue.
many times because of the steel key , the aluminum flywheel will crack at the key way,, B&S has an aluminum key so the flywheels are seldom if ever damaged, and yes, the crankshaft might be bent if someone hit something.
A steel key on an aluminum flywheel. What brain surgeon engineer thought that one out? That key looked good. The tolerances must be infinitely incredible for that to actually make a difference.
I have a toro recycler that acts like it's hydrolocked, but I've taken the oil out, removed the spark plug, and that allows me to pull the recoil through. After putting the spark plug back in I can't pull the recoil out. Any thoughts, thanks.
Hey Dony, Love your channel. I broke my Craftsman riding mower. I ran over a garden hose and stopped the motor dead. Now the starter just buzzes. The motor pulley turns fine by hand. What happened?
Exactly! People in general do not know what the cause is. My neighbor threw a perfectly good mower to the curb because she hit something and bent the blade. Well, a half hour in my garage and I was able to fix it and give it back to her. She was most grateful!
The biggest part of this job is removing the top part of the motor and the easiest part is inserting the pin. That is a job which I would enjoy doing myself.
Had it pull the cord back out of my hand and whip me across the chest! I literally thought the hand of God came down from the heavens and punched me in the chest. Lol but seriously it hurt like hell.
I would use a aluminum key when replacing one. Like was said it saves the flywheel and might save the crank. I have had internal governor come apart from hitting a stake as well.
I recently sold a Evinrude 6 hp outboard on craigslist and I told the guy that bought it you might want to get a couple extra shear pins for the prop, he said "oh" I just use old drill bit's for that and I replied you are defeating the purpose if you hit a stump or whatever that oem shear pin is designed to break instead of tearing up your lower unit gears.
Someone had an argument that there was no such thing as common sense as not everyone thinks the same. I use a torque wrench on critical components particularly on a car, such as once I lost a brake caliper mounting bolt & a transmission rear crossmember mounting bolt so I now make sure the threads are clean, use Loctite if applicable then torque to specifications. Things such as cylinder head bolts on any engine definitely yes, spark plugs not necessarily. Definitely conrod & main bearing cap nuts or bolts & make sure they are oiled up because they are almost constantly bathed in oil. When I did a small automotive course my teacher told us that,he was servicing his wifes car & took to the subframe with a torque wrench.
Not recommended though if it happens again that they hit something that steel pin will damage the shaft I think 🤔 won't it? Idk I'll just try to get original parts hopefully there is still regular pins softer metal let me know if I'm right or wrong 👍
hey guy that steel key isnt the correct way to repair a mower...you should use an aluminum key just like the one that you took out....that steel key will destroy the keyway in that flywheel if the blade ever contacts another hard object... please post a video in which you use the correct key ...
I have watched a few of these videos before attempting my own repair, but this one had the best close ups and complete verbal explanations of each step of the process. You’ve saved me time and money. Thank you
I try yesterday but I use a 2 jaw puller and broke the flywheel.
I agree great video and thorough without kids running around lots of distractions and he talks slow enough so my brain can absorb it just fine.
Just use common sense "we aren't working on the Space Shuttle". Love it. Thanks for all you have done in the small engine community. I mean in Don. You are a Pioneer
thanks Bruce!
wow king of small engine repair
You are correct that anyone can do this repair. Your experience and knowledge (you must've seen thousands of outdoor power equipment engines!) give us great advice. Thanks!!!
Thanks, Dony! Simple, quick fix to a pretty common problem. I bet more mowers get put out as junk for this one reason.
Thanks for the information. Did not know that a slightly bent key would cause a serious problem.
A great video for those of us not really mechanically inclined . Thank You.
Another professional video by Donyboy73.
Absolute best small engine mechanic on RUclips.

Thanks!
Thank you for your support!
Great video. Back to basics. Good advice on the little brake pad and closing the bail. I broke one on my first Tecumseh flywheel key years and years ago.
Always good videos keep them coming an thank you for sharing what you do has helped me in many ways thanks again🙏🏿👍🏿

Love the super fast rachet action
Great vid and I love the sound of the air impact gun
Excellent post. Thank you very much.
Well done video!!! Good explanation and details to be mindful of. Nice pace also!!! Thank you!!! 😁
I learned something new today
Fantastic video...as always!
Thanks a lot 👍
Great video! Quote of the day “use comment sense we are not working on the space shuttle”
We're not working on the space shuttle. Funny stuff. As always a great video.
lol Taryl
Dony's shout out too Taryl Dactayl 666 OUT
Canada has a space shuttle?
What does the flywheel brake do? Does it stall the mower when released or take drive away from the blade? Love the video. I learn something new each time
Nice, very informative!
Great tutorial, thank you for posting this

Michael Boykin hi my is doing that too same engine same problem key is good, so how you adjust the valves?
right on Donyboy

Excellent Video Don, I, have a weed wacker with a similar problem where am getting kickback and hard to start can you highlight this problem for me Thanks.
Thanks for the video.
I got a push mower that when you pull to started it it jerks the handle out of your hand is that the same thing some times you can't even pull it??
Yes, that's exactly right. If the timing is severely off, the spark plug might fire and force the cylinder slightly backwards, but with a great amount of force. This is what causes the starter cord to be jerked out of your hand. Be careful! This could throw out your shoulder, elbow, or back if you don't let go of the handle.

always good, Dony ...
loved the video
Do these small walk behind mower engines have any adjustable valves?
I have a maruyama bc4250h bush cutter that kicks back when the magnet and coil meets. I've adjusted the air gap, cleaned the muffler internal but no luck. This doesn't happen when i remove the spark plug to test if it pulls back when cranked. Any ideas?
What if the key is not sheared yet it kicks back and occasionally backfires on pull starting?
getting kickback with a Coleman mini-bike - just bought used. Great cosmetic condition, but wondering if it's a flywheel issue too??
Take note, I thought I had the same problem then discovered the flywheel nut was torqued so lightly it could be almost loosen by fingers. Initial flywheel key didn't seem out of place or damaged so I tightened the flywheel nut to around 50 pounds. That did the trick.
I never realized how important pulling the plug wire was until a CR500 fired on a slight stroke of the kickstart. I was turning the engine over by hand.
Awesome video
Donyboy, Is there a better zero turn mower for the money than the Arien IKON for around $3000? Looking at a 50" deck.
Great video, but. In my case it wasn't the key, but rather loose valves. Adjusting that valves fixed the problem. And it was an arm breaker not just a little kickback. Thank for that video though.
Where can I purchase that flywheel puller
Can the pull back from the cord be something other than a damaged key? I’ve never hit anything with my blade and after changing the front clip on a cub cadet I now have this pullback issue.

Exellent video
Don I don't see any valve adjustments available on these small engines lawnmowers. So, I assume there isn't any valve adjustments correct?
there is but you have to remove the valve to grind the end or replace it
Hey Dony, Love your channel. I broke my Craftsman riding mower.
I ran over a garden hose and
stopped the motor dead. Now the starter just buzzes.
The motor pulley turns fine by hand. What happened?
does the starter actually turn?
No, just makes a buzzing sound.
Are Tecumseh parts still available? I have lost a needle valve that allows fuel to feed gas into my float bowl.
Yes, you need kit 631021b
HI Donny ,my lawn mover new but when I stop engines about 20 seconds blake kickbac Please tell me how fix this reason Thaks
Damn yard machine
Nice job Don,
Is there a reason you do not clean up equipment as you work on it or adjust valves while you're in the engine?
customer did not want to pay
this is for all motors that get a sudden stop
Not always the flywheel key. I have 2 mowers with new keys and still run bad and kickback. It could have jumped time on the camshaft
So many lawnmowers are thrown on the scrap heap because of this problem!
Exactly! People in general do not know what the cause is. My neighbor threw a perfectly good mower to the curb because she hit something and bent the blade. Well, a half hour in my garage and I was able to fix it and give it back to her. She was most grateful!

your in the latest canadian tire flyer
What about in a walk behind trimmer? ARIENS ST622 is kicking back and the key is in one piece? And theres no blade to hit!
Not only can it hurt your elbow, the pull cord can whip your hand with the plastic handle hard enough to bust it open. Not fun.
Had it pull the cord back out of my hand and whip me across the chest! I literally thought the hand of God came down from the heavens and punched me in the chest. Lol but seriously it hurt like hell.
@@kspec6131 been there done it. Very very painful.
There's your problem right there, Donnie, "Tecumseh" lol
What's the problem if after this is done and the valves are adjusted and it still wants to jerk the rope really hard
Why does a B&S engine use aluminum sheer keys when Tecumseh uses steel?
I have been finding that 7 out of ten that have a sheared flywheel key has a bent crankshaft.
80 % of my repairs are fuel related.
if steel keys are common then I'm not surprised. Seems like making the key out of a more forgiving metal would be a better method.
My thinking is along the same line as you 95thousandroses , seems like it defeats the purpose altogether if it's steel, but I'm not a engineer lol.
I would use a aluminum key when replacing one. Like was said it saves the flywheel and might save the crank. I have had internal governor come apart from hitting a stake as well.

You make good films... Than you.
"I don't have the torque specs, just use common sense, we are not working on the space shuttle" you need to put that on a Tshirt
🙏🏼❤️🌸🌹🌺🌻🌼🌷❤️🙏🏼
My neighbor had that same mower but the old series with other carb set up I hate tecumseh mowers, they only made good Snowblower's
Checked the flywheel key. Not the problem. What next?
a half degree shear? nah, it the blade you replaced fixed it
hey guy that steel key isnt the correct way to repair a mower...you should use an aluminum key just like the one that you took out....that steel key will destroy the keyway in that flywheel if the blade ever contacts another hard object... please post a video in which you use the correct key ...
that is the correct key for that mower, spend some time and do research before commenting innacurately
Working on the space shuttle, throw common sense out the window.
no mouse today
Good job
