some players said they did the mission with Javier before confronting Thomas Downes (the man Arthur got the disease from) and their Arthur still coughed unless Arthur was exposed before beating up Downes? (he breaks up a fight between you and Tommy early in chapter 2)
I remember in chapter 2 when waking up from sleeping at camp Arthur coughed. When that happened I thought it was really detailed for them to make him randomly cough, little did I know that was the beginning of the end...
i feel like all coughs in games movies or tv shows are intentional and meant for concern, he coughs a bit after the house robberyof the weird talking with javier in chapter 2. definitely the first concerning cough of the game
There’s actually an earlier time Arthur coughs. It’s shortly after he recovers from his time with the O’Driscolls, when he goes to speak to Dutch, Dutch asks if he’s ok and Arthur gives a slight cough before answering.
Arthur definitely knew at this point. When Strauss asks him why he's flinching, Arthur's answer struck me as a man who knew something was wrong. He just wasn't entirely sure what. That or he knew, but didn't want to believe it
This was the first concerning Cough that I realized on my first playtrough. On the second playthrough I cought Arthur coughing right at the first mission when u arrive at Clemens point, when arthur is talking with Dutch. And now on my third playthrough, still on chapter 2, I went on a homestead robbery with Javier and there Arthur also has some concerning cough… This games gives us a lot of hints about Arthur TB
Chapter 4 is also when Arthur appearance starts changing. He develops dark circles around his eyes, and the creases on his face start becoming more pronounced
I fucking hated Strauss from the first moment I met him on here. He aggravates Arthur to death over those damn debts and it’s always the poorest people he takes advantage of. Like the first dude he sends you to is a rancher that doesn’t even speak good English and a blind man would’ve known not to lend money to Downes. He was in horrible shape when he stops you from fighting anymore in valentine, it was pretty obvious the gang wasn’t gonna make any money from him.
He has a bad coughing fit after the Javier mission. I know it’s there whether you meet downes or not. But I believe that homestead mission shows his first TB cough and they just let you play the mission before the downes mission
Thats just because of all the dust or whatever from that barn im pretty sure, he gets TB because Mr Downes directly spits on Arthur when he's infected/sick and thats one of the ways you can contract TB
I think the first time I noticed a concerning cough was the home robbery that’s up in the mountains with the hillbilly family. Arthur has a coughing fit in the barn while getting the stash and also after.
i feel like Arthur’s 1st concerning cough was during the mission where Arthur and John rescue Jack. When they’re walking to Bronte’s and Arthur is talking to Dutch, he coughs mid sentence
I noticed a cough before he met Mr Downes and got sick. The side mission where you go with Javier to Chez Porter, with the family that speaks their own language. Once you clear them out and find the stash in the barn. As they are uncovering the chest of money, Arthur starts coughing uncontrollably.
If you hold off on doing the plague mission as long as possible a couple missions before hand Arthur has a bit of a cough. Probably because Rockstar assumed players would do all of the loan shark missions before other ones.
You also start to notice when shopping for clothes or changing outfits that he has labored breathing, its only noticeable in my game immediately after beating up Thomas downes, before that it is entirely normal breathing.

I had already gotten hardcore spoiled when going into this game. Every time I heard a little cough my heart dropped. I don’t know if I’ll make it through the ending
I personally thought the first really bad cough was when you rob that homestead with Javier up in Cumberland forest. Just as you find the stash, you walk outside and he has a coughing fit. It might just be from the dust of the barn, however knowing the fate of Arthur Morgan, I believed quite differently.
Technically, I think the first concerning cough is during the optional mission with Javier, when you rob the inbred family’s farm up north in Chapter 2. After finding the money stash in the barn, Arthur starts coughing; pretty sure that’s the first sign.
i noticed his face started to look sicker in chapter 3, sunken around the eyes and slightly discoloured. i also noticed way more deer in cut scenes…this game is brilliant at foreshadowing and giving clues!

I like to do a lot of side missions before the main story since I played it so many times. When I played the mission where you chase magnifico the magic midget, Arthur runs through the smoke and coughs worse then any normal person would. Though it was interesting.
When you come back from Guarma, and you look at Arthur’s face, you can tell there is something wrong with him.
Rockstar did us dirty by not making a secret ending where you can put your mask up or intimidate Downs without coming close to him
I had already gotten hardcore spoiled when going into this game.
After the fishing trip with dutch and hosea arthur coughs as they finish the song
I swear i noticed the first time he coughed while talking to dutch n i knew it'd be a problem
I’m replaying the game rn and I just got this scene yesterday and it changed my whole mood
The coughing starts as early as chapter 2..as soon as you do the Thomas Downes mission Arthur will begin coughing... Very annoying..I want to enjoy the wonderful game with a healthy Arthur 😢
Strauss was an OG tho. Got picked up by the Pinkertons and was literally tortured for so long until he died from it. They tortured him for names and locations of the gang after they broke up. Didn’t say shit.
