As others have said, a sewer grate or another crumbling hole behind his left foot would be great to let light into the base! Also I don’t know if you’ve already thought of this, but having some glowing warp stones in the cavern would be pretty neat and flavorful.
Seeing Jon's obsession with buying all kinds of new paints that spend most of their time on the shelf, and minis that clog his closets with no sign of reprieve, and taking on huge projects that he knows are a bad idea from the outset but does them anyway, really helps me to cope with my own hobby inadequacies by reminding myself that even the pros suffer from the same hobbying vices that I do. But then he goes on to actually paint models and finish projects and enter competitions and win trophies. Never meet your heroes. -_-;;; /s love you Jon
Afew suggestions; 1. Crack the top surface to reveal more of the interior 2. Have a sea of little rats fill the empty space of the mordheim base instead of the cavern. Like the pied piper. Then add full sized skaven below. 3. Along the lines of the pied piper. Have rats running all up and down his cloak in excess, an attempt maybe make your horned rat stand out. 4. Maybe add a huge piece of warpstone in his free hand, suggesting him drawing upon the power to crack the floor etc / osl option later. 5. Add roots to the lip of the earth that has been raised up. I feel it has empty space and will help make that appear more as fresh earth and create some separation 6. The cavern could be lit up with LED or use green LED to map your painting with some camera shots. 7. If you hold any stock in complex basing pushing pieces to winners (since alot of the winners have insane basing) You could complicate it with burst water, more peep holes. The surface could have a dead body or two in parts with rats eating at them. 8. Lastly, you could create a similar hole at the very opposite size of the base so you can look right through it to catch a silhouette of action / drama / movement 9. On the painting side. You could bring in a chaos element with his foot being the site of action / magic in use. Painting a pentagram and having the light of that creeping into the cracks of the mortar and stone work.
Fun fact, the fact that you used red bricks is very well chosen as GWHQ is based in Nottingham, part of the Midlands which is home to the clay that made red bricks thus alot of our older stuctures are red
I've seen a bunch of foam crafting tutorials where they glued the bricks down and then used a thined down plaster or Spackle or actual grout to grout the brickwork in after painting them and then used a wet cloth or sponge to wipe away 99% of the grout haze which gave both a great look to the brick/stone work as well as a good start on the weathering for those elements. It looks good with larger stonework but amazing with smaller red brickwork like your using.
With out a doubt my favourite video of yours. I always look at artists on RUclips and think "they know what their doing. Its so simple for them". This was such a cool insight into your thought process. I really enjoyed it. Thanks dude.
Dear Ninjon, Love your vids! 2 ideas that i have (and probaly has been said by others) is: a round sewer grate on the sides so you can look in the cavern and/or glowing warpstone in the cavern so you can see in there! have fun building and painting!
I absolutely love this project! I'm more of a builder than a painter so I appreciate the work that you've done on the project so far. I have a small suggestion. Use Skaven in the bottom part and rat swarms around and even jumping off the front. I feel that this will show your story better.
Love it! The one thing I'd tweek at this point is the shape of the hole under Vizzik. It's a bit too symmetrical, giving it the appearance of a mouth (which might be cool in a Nurgly kind of way if you lean into it, but I don't think that's the vibe you're going for). Others here have had cool suggestions as well, I especially like the idea of led lights (green, obviously) in the cave, to make your work show more clearly. Anyway, awesome work! Looking forward to seeing your progress on it!
The prophet model got me into the hobby a week ago, I could NOT resist this amazing sculpt. I'll be training and learning on the Skaventide box first before attempting this, but it's such a fun project to work towards. I'm so happy to see you attempting this as it serves for the perfect inspiration and learnings along the way. Thanks for all the great content over the years, it's now time for me to put all that theoretical knowledge into something real i can be proud of.
IMO you're at your absolute best when in your inspiration zone, but also out of your comfort zone. Really looking forward to seeing how this one evolves, I'd love to see some of the Colour Cube influences on the paintjob itself.
Holy Crap!!! It's crazy how the universe works! Just yesterday I was scouring your chanel for a new kitbash video and couln't find one I hadn't watch! And here is one that has arrived infront of me on a delectable platter of creativity and awsomeness!
Please keep doing videos on this project! Would make for a great series. Wish more people did videos on their sculpting, basing, and conversion work - this vid was super inspiring !
Your videos about your process are always inspiring. I competed in the NOVA Capital Palette this year and got a bronze! Thank you for inspiring me to enter. As for yours, I think an open manhole or grate on the road would prove light into the sewer/cave enough to get people to look more into it.
Love this piece so far Jon. Can't wait to see you put more work into it and begin the painting process down the line. This has inspired me to get back to planning out the base for my Golden Demon project. Many thanks.
Loved how this video covered the uncertainty and doubt of the creative process. If you don't feel those things you are most likely not creating something new unique and special.
15:45 thats a pretty big lump youve got there on youre left thumb joint buddy. Hope it doesnt bother you, mine do sadly. Great concept for the base and looks very good, gonna look amazing when painted!
The concept is awesome, and I could visualize it in my head. Look forward to seeing more and more materialized. Definitely need a warpstone green diffused light in the cavern. That with your painting skills would be amazing.
I literally just completed my first ever attempt a custom base using polystyrene and Milliput yesterday and I can *feel* the drive to learn more and improve because of how much fun it was just messing around with clay and texture paint. Seeing amazing stuff like this just pushes me even more to get better at this new part of the hobby that I've discovered I love!
Holy crap men, this is an overthinking exercise. When you drilled into the plinth, I was thinking you would do 2 holes, one in the front, one in the back, and Vizzik would be the one coming out of a hole, only it wasn't really a hole. The sides of the plinth would hold those wooden structures you talked about and it would look as if he is walking through the trenches towards the enemy, towering over the scaffolding built by the ratmen. Maybe with a few rats here and there to represent scale. The way you're doing this is gonna give you a lot of work that is not gonna be seen (like you said). I really hope the project brings you joy, cause it's gonna be a grind! Good luck my man, and hope your effort will be recognized!
This is an exciting project, looking forward to following along. I don't know GD rules, so maybe it wouldn't be allowed, but I think one or two green LED "warpstone" in the cavern for some light would be an amazing effect and maybe stop those details getting lost. EDIT: Guess I should read comments before posting, everyone has had the same idea 😄
@3:59 First, use a manual saw, then you can broke out the slices, and just after that use the rotary tool for detailing... this should have taken up an awful lot of time.
You went from my all time favorite model in the Cavalier Marshal to probably my favorite (and best IMO) sculpt GW has released this year! Great choice in models Jon!
I am so excited for another golden demon project series! Pictures I agree with some other commenters that a grate or an LED in the bottom of it will really help with the effect of the gnawhole.
Awesome, please make this a regular series on your channel. Be great to see the paint process, thought process, how you tackle the inevitable issues/motivation/feedback etc.
Damn Jon, how long did it take to write that intro? That was good, I got good giggles, and really enjoy your channel. Many reasons... I learn things, it is entertaining, you make me laugh (thank you for that), and when you and Vince get together, it is all the better. Just thought I would mention it. Good luck with Golden Demon!
Exceptional foundation, literally and figuratively. Seeing a project like this makes me wonder why I've never attempted my own. That model is nuts btw.
I love the way your brain works. I hope to be able to meet you and talk creative processes. Your in depth explanation and videography really encourages a person not only to create, but to explore and experiment. Another top notch NINJON video!
Considering the last couple Golden Demon have rewarded very complex bases, it's def worth the time investment of that lower level. I wish GD was more about the minis, but it looks like it's all about the spectacle nowadays.
If you don't already have Thanquol and Boneripper, he's got a *ton* of spare rats on the sprue that you could use! I think he has something like.. 25 random, spare rats. Also the Skaventide endless spell has a bunch of rats on rubble. This is already looking fantastic! Cannot wait to see the progress on this!
You should make some warp lightning coming out of his staff and the hole opening up even the raised bit of ground ...and a load more rats...I have a vision of what you described...your gonna need more. All sizes...
The underside of the "ramp" his hoof is on needs something that looks like structural or the brick look, however great it;s looking, won't make visual sense. As bricks would just fall apart and he'd be stepping on air. Wooden supports is all I'm coming up with. Im very fond of the idea already voiced of a defused green light to reflect their use of warp stones. Excited to see what you do with this!
i think i finally have a tip for you. If you ever need a mortar type thing again you can use pre mixed grout. Or even mix it yourself. There is sanded and non sanded depends what texture you want. as well as multiple colors. hope it helps. Other then that great video i think he looks awesome so far
I feel this so hard... I'm trying to get War & Ruin from Darksiders to life. But the hooves won't fit perfectly into the shapes in the base. There was a small moment where I thought "Jesus, this figure takes so much time, is it even worth it?!". But I'm sure, when it's finished, it will be jawdropping awesome. This kind of struggle makes the figure worth much more then every amount of money can pay. And so do yours - it look's awesome already!!♥
Great stuff - thanks for sharing the process and your thoughts. Love your videos. So motivating. You (among other RUclipsrs) brought me back to the hobby.
I look at moderns cars and complex minis in the same light, if you need to reach a certain area your probably going to have to take of the thing apart to get to it easily. its looking like it will be a nice display piece cant wait to see the finished piece.
I’ll be attending my first adapt next year and to him with the idea of jumping in and entering something in to the golden demon. I wanted to ask is it OK to use 3-D printed objects from epic basing. I wasn’t sure if that was against the rules or not.
Should be perfectly fine! Assuming that your entire model isn't 3d printed then your all good, It's simply a basing product it shouldn't effect your pieces entry 👍
This is so awesome! Would recommend if it’s not against the rules to put a green led in that hole. You could feed the wire through the bottom of the whole plinth and connect a button battery and switch at the bottom back of the plinth.
As others have said, a sewer grate or another crumbling hole behind his left foot would be great to let light into the base!
Also I don’t know if you’ve already thought of this, but having some glowing warp stones in the cavern would be pretty neat and flavorful.
I was also thinking this as well because skaven tunnels tend to have a lot of warp stone glow coming from them. I came down to comment this XD
Doing it with green LEDs would be amazing
This!
or mushroom instead of stones ?
Seeing Jon's obsession with buying all kinds of new paints that spend most of their time on the shelf, and minis that clog his closets with no sign of reprieve, and taking on huge projects that he knows are a bad idea from the outset but does them anyway, really helps me to cope with my own hobby inadequacies by reminding myself that even the pros suffer from the same hobbying vices that I do.
But then he goes on to actually paint models and finish projects and enter competitions and win trophies.
Never meet your heroes. -_-;;;
/s love you Jon
yeah dude just jump in. if it sucks, there's probably other gray stuff hiding in that weird corner in your closet.
Absolutely love it. Would adding a sewer grating in the cover of the base allow some light into the cavern below?
The underground screams for a green LED light. Diffused with cotton fluff or maybe resin. Even a low watt glow will bring the underdark to life.
An led light base won't win a golden demon though.
@@DarkAbyssMiniatures agreed. this would look sick for an army centrepiece, but something like that has no place in GD
Yes, definitely. Maybe Boylei Hobbytime can inspire Jon to go the extra mile.
Didn't see this earlier😂
@@Double_Flush is it disqualifying ?
What a humble man you are Ninjon, always enjoy your videos and great attitude.
How he opens with being irresponsible then goes into his opening theme with the goofy look. Priceless.
Afew suggestions;
1. Crack the top surface to reveal more of the interior
I feel it has empty space and will help make that appear more as fresh earth and create some separation

9. On the painting side. You could bring in a chaos element with his foot being the site of action / magic in use. Painting a pentagram and having the light of that creeping into the cracks of the mortar and stone work.
It would be killer to see him 300 a dwarf or something midaction...
RE: 9. >> glowing sign of the horned rat under the his foot
So excited for another Road to Golden Demon series! Don't stress about updating tooo much, but just a lil please!
What a great start, love it! And congratulations on your Golden Demon!

Awesome, maybe you can include some led lighting from inside the hole to allow watch all the tunnel , something like warp lighting or torch.
Make it a nice shaven green glow from underneath!
@@Treppenwitz_ what effect is a "shaven glow" ?
