Philippa is a treasure - erudite, passionate, extremely knowledgeable about Tolkien and storytelling and general, and also frankly inspiring for looking after oneself too, definitely #goals! Can barely recognise her from the making of the LOTR films bonus features. Getting so many good vibes from Rohirrim and everything coming up from WB LOTR. Let’s go!

I hope they make "The Silmarillion" (cross fingers) before I die. I'd love to see that piece of LOTR lore come to life!❤❤❤😊

I watched war of the Rohirrum and I enjoyed it but I feel like it wasn't fully fleshed out. She made a comment that they made it in 3 years rather than 5 and maybe that's why. I did feel like it was rushed a bit. I also want to mention that if Lord of the rings gets a reboot or remade I will riot. The LOTR trilogy is perfect and will stand the test of time. Do not mess with it!

Tolkien did not appoint Any movie screenwriters to continue his legacy. He opposed all of this exploitation. He did not want the gaps in lore filled. He wanted the gaps to remain, so that they lent the works he Did publish a sense of timeless mythic depth. Boyens Jackson etc are all opportunists seeking to advance their own careers and line their own pockets. If they truly cared about Tolkien and his legacy they would respect his wishes and leave his works alone.

Does this woman seriously believe people asked for hint of gollum? This is gonna be one of the most bizarre decisions ever made in film histories. WB learned nothing from box office bombs like matrix 4 and blue beetles as both of those films were asked by absolutely no one.

What I find bizarre about people criticizing female lead films, is that the vast majority of the time those critics say, “Female lead trope….*insert whining*”. So if a movie has a female lead, then it is inherently pandering, forced, and only pro-woman? The gall that people have, to critic well-made movies, which just so happen to have female leads, is beyond hypocritical to me because almost all films for so long where only male lead roles. Why don’t we ever hear male lead trope critics? Why are people so uncomfortable and critical of woman in roles of power? Why are people so quick to cast judgement on a film they have not even seen yet? I sadly believe it is a reflection of the masses of insecure men.

exactly! It's also a tactic for grifters online to generate rage bait for clicks and views whilst also swinging the political pendulum

Those that complain purely cause it's a woman are indeed sexist. But I, along with many others, don't have an issue at all with female leads if they're done well (Sarah Connor, LoTR ladies, Katniss Everdeen, Cartoon Mulan, Snow White, and other Disney classics, Hermione Granger, etc.) Too many nowadays are Mary Sues with no semblance of being human. They're unstoppable, hardened, stoic, have little to no humor, at times they'll make a jab remark at the expense of men to "balance the playing field", and they have no story arc because there are no stakes for them. We know from the start they can withstand anything in their way effortlessly.
I want a great character to be realized at the same time as the audience. We're in this journey together and are seeing their story unfold alongside them. There's gotta be stakes and a reason to root for them, but also be relatable in some ways. Have confidence, but have humility and respect, make mistakes and learn from them like we all do. We all have weaknesses, even super heroes have weaknesses from their origin stories.

@@imadubsfan1EXACTLY. Or always inserting a female lead in beloved material where one did not exist. I am saying this as a woman. The travesty of Galadriel in ROP has soured us all on "female leads" in Tolkien material, as they either ruin the magnificent female characters Tolkien created, or they were largely created and poorly written. I hope this movie can prove the overwhelming modern trend wrong, but I'm not hopeful.

@@imadubsfan1 You nailed it. Arcane is also a great recent example, as well as cyberpunk edgerunners and of course, Eyowyn. Its crazy how much more easily female characters could pass a bechdel test if their entire conception in conflict didn't have anything to do with overcoming the pressures of patriarchy or victimisation by male characters. It absolutely tanked the second season of House of the dragon for me, and is the most pervasive issue with Rings of Power's take on Galadriel. People in the more left leaning inclusivity camp keep using the bitter manosphere on the right as an excuse to not improve upon what has become a trope in modern franchise cinema of the 'girlboss." Normal people have started noticing it and since this character archetype actively repels a male audience and doesn't really speak to the reality of a female audience, these films continue to fail. Tired of comments like op's entirely missing the point. Everyone deserves better characters in these properties. I hope this film is good, but it looks rather dull to me.

    • @alanbyrne9972

It's nothing to do with 'girlboss'. We've had decades of whiny orphan boys whisked away by wizards to become the hero who saves the world.
