Thanks for that. The STOL competitions are super fun to watch and show great skills. I work with a bunch of commercial pilots who can safely push their planes in extreme conditions. Being consistent when the conditions are not. That’s what really impresses me. Thanks for watching.
Great landings Oliver!! A very good power/weight ratio with that 235 engine, what wonderful landscapes there in Alaska, very good your videos!! Greetings from Argentina!!👋🏻👋🏻🛩️
I flew that airplane years ago, right after they put the big wing on. Try the ACME Stinger on the back of her, you will love it. Won't get bucked like you do with a tail spring. Take Care, Greg
Thanks Greg, I stumbled across an old video of bushwhacker 1.0 and 37X bopping around some sand bars a while back. With its history and who built her I figured you had been behind the yoke at least once. I’ll look into the stinger. Usually do wheel landings unless I’m plugged with gear, then a better tail suspension would be helpful for sure. Don’t have a ton of time in her yet, but I’ve enjoyed what she can do. Glad to see Bushwhacker 2.0 make it to Alaska. Good place for it.
Flew an M-6-235 my last 14 years with the Department of Interior. Great airplane, although the interior cabin space is a little crowded compared to a C-185 or a the DeHavilland Beaver. Thanks very much for posting. Much appreciated.
@@olivercoray I’m looking..! There was one in AK that looked really good…but my A&P cousin in Kenai and a buddy looked into it and it was a no go. Nice M6 in the lower 48 that might be the winner. 😊
@@5AcresandaMoose it is unfortunately a tough time to buy an airplane, inventory is low and costs are high, not sure they will go down but at least they have leveled out a little. Sleeper performers like maules, 180 hp 170Bs, and super stinsons used to be 50K for a nice one. Now that's doubled and more... but like most pilots, I'd rather be flying instead of shopping...
For what’s it’s worth, buy a plane, then get a project. They take a lot of time and effort and money to get flying. It’s very rewarding but make sure you have something to have fun in sooner then later. Then you can take your time and enjoy the build. Happy you enjoyed the videos.
@@olivercoray I can second this!!! I bought a lightly wrecked m5 in fall 2012 and barely did much to it till 2018. But I really amped up my efforts and got the fabric on it last year and just spent the last month getting it ready to paint. Just got it painted.. I wish I would've just bought a flyable airplane.. 🤦🤷♂️ I had my ultralight all this time but Id really like to have been traveling.. especially when the fuel prices were lower than they are now.. holy crap! The expenses never end..🤷♂️But I will have a like new M5 with 700 hrs on it when Im done.. hopefully spring 2022. 😁
I bought a “3 month project”. Took a year…. And cost more then a finished plane. Great process, very rewarding, but not as much as actually flying missions. Good luck with the m5!
Why not just get a Maule? Oh, already got one. A 35 year exp. builder pilot, the Maule, in all it's variants, is the ONLY certified aircraft that gives me a woodie.
WOW , if you belief in GOD i would say ur already in PARADISE and with a NICE MAULE like this you can go anywhere in PARADISE !! Have FUN Sir and lots of SAVE FLIGHTS, I love the video !!
We own a couple of remote lodges. Flying support mostly but try and get away for a few fun trips. Flying off airport Is a lot of fun and challenging, but often buying a plane is not the hard part, it’s maintaining. Keep at it: it’s worth it. But flying often provides us with the highest of highs, and the lowest of lows. Good luck with your journey.
Mostly lake Clark national park. Some Katmai stuff and lower Kenai peninsula as well. Really fun places to fly around when the weather is decent. Happy to see more people posted Alaska maule videos. Keep it up.
Thanks for looking out. She does have a pair. Does pretty well with them. Just a couple of flights in the beginning before I got them. She already lost most of her hearing as a pup from infections.. apparently a white dog thing…. Who knows
Tricycle maules are great, and have a lot of advantages. Better visibility, cheaper insurance, safer in crosswinds…. With that said, for tough off airport operations they have limitations as do any nose wheel. Prop clearance and limited nose wheel size (8:50) are the biggest. If grass strips and smooth gravel bars are your mission, then you’d be all set. If you want to fly skis, or roll through Mellon sized rocks, tundra, or soft sand…. Tail wheel is what you need. Many folks here in Alaska run tailwheels with giant tiers, and never utilize their capabilities.. just like the way it looks… Which is fine too. We all love our airplanes….
Not if you keep the tail where it belongs. Maules are not hard to land, I’ve seen Cessna 172’s get groundlooped. I personally feel the maule has plenty of rudder, elevator is the one that runs out.
Depends on the mission. And depends on the maule, a good long wing with big 540 maule is hard to beat. 170’s are great with a 180 hp. not quite the performer with big loads. But each to their own. All planes have their niche.
@@olivercoray I want STOL performance carrying just 1 passenger and light loads. The Maule seems cheaper, but less quality than cessna. I've read bad things about ground handling from respected sources. I flown a 170 2 days ago and it was so easy to fly and good STOL performer, but it had a 180hp engine...
Good to see some real-world STOL with a load instead of just the minimum weight exhibition stuff. Great vid!

Wow, completely different lifestyle than the lower 48. Amazing views and aircraft.
Glad you enjoyed it!
Airplanes and Dire Straights, perfect!
Nice choice of music, finally some culture in a video
Glad you liked it!

Thank you! Love your country. Spent a lot of time down there.
What a workhorse! Great footage and excellent Knopfler song!
Maules have funny reputations but work horses they are!
absolutely beautiful. Place looks so relaxing. That looks like freedom!!
Freedom for sure. Lucky as all get out.

Nicely done! I like the bears too...
Bears are like fun neighbors for us. Keep things dynamic for sure. Glad you enjoyed!
Great video, don’t know if I could be that calm around a Kodak.
Oddly we have so many bears around, each one is well known, we get pretty complacent…. So far so good ;)
@olivercoray I want to come to Alaska, but bears. You know, ones hiding behind every tree to eat me. 🤣
Очень красивая природа! Классное видео! Отличные самолёты, а особенно Ваш мулл👍!!!
Спасибі вам що показали таку красу і свій чудовий літак.
I appreciate that. We are lucky to live here!
Wow, great plane, great footage. Well done!
Thanks for that! Looks like you’ve got some time behind the yoke/stick. Glad you enjoyed it!
Knopfler! Well played my man!
Great info!
Time to buy that maule you want :)

Don't need no runways up here.
Was that radial engine plane a Murphy Moose?
It was a de Havilland DHC-2 Beaver. Pretty common work horse here in Alaska and Canada. I believe that was a late 50’s model. Cool birds.
@@olivercoray for sure, I'm born and raised in Wasilla so I'm very familiar with the king of the bush beaver. Wish I had $500k to get one.
