I remember watching your Rhinestone Eyes video and thinking, man I hope he’s doing well nowadays, that was years ago, I’m both excited and glad you’ve done theatrical work, good on you man!
CircularMirror7 yeah! I feel so lucky that I got to work on the final chapter - the 2nd movie came out right when I was finishing up my MFA in animation and it inspired me so much, so it was a real full circle moment.
Calipurnio, el Rey del Odio yep! These are some of the shots I did fir those movies. Glad you enjoyed them! So many people really pour their heart and soul into making these films :)
Your animation seriously reminds me of Brad Bird, meaning your character designs and their movements and how they both say so much about the character. Like you know they move like that but not this other guy, he moves like that. You’re really going under appreciated
My man, this is the biggest glowup I've ever seen, the last I saw from you was the rhinestone eyes video, and now your working on dragons, you're cracked my friend gg
ephlox these are just my animation work, I didn’t make any of the characters or anything - I was lucky enough to work on How To Train Your Dragon: The Hidden World and Abominable while at Dreamworks, and very briefly work on Spies in Disguise at Blue Sky :)
richard van as y didn’t gorillaz animate rhinestone eyes they animated feel good that would’ve been legendary if u did both - nice work like actually takes some real talent to do that
What software is used to animate these? also is how much reference material is given to you before you start animating? is it just a drawn storyboard or does it go into more detail?
I use Maya mostly but dreamworks has proprietary software :) we get given a pass called “Layout” where the basic beats of the shot are rendered very quickly as a guide, then we go to work! We have the directors instructions, video of the actors in the recording booth and the rest relies on video reference we shout ourselves!
Dylan Cameron yes! There are clips of my work on Abominable and How to Train Your Dragon: The Hidden World which I did at Dreamworks, a performance test for Spies in Disguise which I did at Blue Sky and a shot of my own (the glasses one) which I did for fun!
Yes! I animated every character you see in these shots! In addition I was responsible for animating the props that the characters interact with too - the shot of Toothless and Light Fury at 0:44 was particularly challenging because I had to animate the characters, in their chains, attached to the ship, and then do Grimmel running along the top, and make it all work together - such a quick shot, but so tricky to figure out!!
Energy Blast yes! I actually did far too much schooling - I got an undergrad then a masters in animation then went to animation mentor the online school and that was the place where I actually learned to animate. Wish I had just gone there first 😕 but you live and learn!
