I'm always using a .6 mm with Adam Nolly's technique. Having a flex pick allows to get through the string like a slaped note instead of plucking it. It also limits the tension in the arm and acts like a compressor
I find that a lighter pick calls for more hand tension.
I made a pick from plexiglass that is almost 2 inches wide and 4-5 mm thick in the center, down to a fine point on the edge. It works so well for me and the attack is off the charts. To each their own but I say make your own pick. I had a jazz buddy who had a pick made of fossilized amber.
1.5 gator grips are pretty fantastic bass picks. I like the thinner tortexes too but they can wear out fast sitting in with a jam band.
Tortex sharp 1.0mm all the way. They are great especially for faster music. Like thrash or punk.
That's what I have been using for 31 years.
@@ricardojmestre You just have to buy a lot of them because when the sharp tip is grinded down they don't feel the same. 👍

Thanks for your comment I’m trying to learn bass but since I used to play guitar I only had really thin guitar picks. I listen to a lot of punk so I need to play fast, so I’m hoping getting thicker picks will help
@@Lord_D33 sorry for the late reply. Yes, if I am playing Rock. I don't use the pointy ones, I use the ones with the round tip. If I am playing reggae or fuck, I lose the pick. But I have started with pick, added fingerstyle and now I am learning slap.

My favorite currently is the Dunlop Big Stubby (2mm). It has very round edges and so it has a very big, beefy tone.
I have the 3 mm I'm trying to see which lick fits best bevause I'm new

Sweet. I enjoy the 3mm, however I experimented a bit with the Flow 4.2mm from Dunlop as well.

I usually go straight for my Jim Dunlop USA Nylon .73 mm or .88 mm. They have a textured grip, it aren’t too heavy and hard to play fast. And they both have a little reflex to them for dynamic range.
yup, thats the one. and with the beveled edges it eliminates all the clank and ratling
Dunlop Tortex 0.88 is the one that sounds best to me here. Coincidentially is also the one I mostly use myself lol
Currently I'm using Big Stubby 3mm and Big Stubby triangle 3mm. I've ordered Dragon Heart 2.5mm and, yeah, we will see. I have pretty high expectations :)...
ive always used the 1.5 gator grips from dunlop. Love the powder that sticks to your sweat when you use them instead of a rough surface.

I'm a huge fan of jazz picks. Anything at least 1.0mm thick is ideal, as more thickness translates to more effortless playing (too thick will impact dynamics and clarity).
From my experience I found Dunlop Jazz 3s good all around.
Not too thick or thin, doesnt bend, stays in place. And I feel like I got more control over the tone with em
They're just a little too small for me, but I do like them for guitar
I'm surprised more bass players don't use the red Jazz III picks. I compared every pick I collected over the years and the Jazz III was a clear winner in terms of sound. It had much more low mids and its small size made it easier to handle for intricate playing
1 mm Dunlop Flow, played inversed with a shallow corner. It has the perfect profile for bass, with some of that Flow edge shape going on.
We need a big triangle jazz pick. Big area to grip, solid feel, jazz pick like precision. Yay or nay?
I ALWAYS use a Dunlop big stubby in 2 or 3 mm. They were so comfortable and gives that big, intense bass sound.
Gotta say if you want rich flea type tones nothing else is better than a plain stainless steel guitar pick.
Try any gauge.
It sounds very poppy and slappy like a coin but with no bevel to catch on the bass strings.
Dunlop flow jumbo 4.20 plectrums are also amazing for bass.
Been playing with my fingers since I started playing bass but I'll be jamming with a Motley Crue tribute band and believe I need a pic to get that bass sound I hear on the recordings. After watching your video I decided I'm going to start with the Dunlop .88 Tortex. Anyone have suggestions for me please hit me up. ✌️😎
Great place to start!! That’s the standard all-around best option. Lower the gauge if you start feeling fatigued or your notes sound uneven. I tend to use .73 nowadays.
What picks do our Pick heroes use? Chris Squire, Paul MacCartney, Roger Waters, Anthony Jackson, Bobby Vega?. Curious. Great video.
I use the Jazz III on bass. 😆 I am definitely wanting to try some other ones now, though.

I notice you pick eighth notes all downward. I need to start doing that to get a more even tone, rather than strumming both up and down.
I have used .73 for bass for a long time now. It is the perfect balance of flex and rigidity. If you're picking a Jazz bass, these are your friend.
Lately, I'm really into .60s.
You just spoke my life story, haha! I’ve religiously been .73 but lately, .60 feels like it just glides over the strings.

I have been on a pick journey. For me I hold picks lightly so alot of spinning I encounter on bass. 1. Hands down Jazz III carbon fiber max grip does not move and sounds great. 2. Any Dunlop Poly Gel is great. I like M Purple or ML Green for no spin and a flex feel. 3. Dava Nickel tip is a great bright tone tho does spin at times, but the tone is worth the inconvenience.
Heavy picks are the way to go for a good tone in rock and metal
After buying a bunch of picks to see what worked best for me, I found myself stuck between the yellow (.73 mm) and the green (.88 mm) Tortex. It is comfortable to play and I really like the sound.
The lighter picks sound weak and I can't play very well with the heavier ones (issues with tempo and dynamics). Also, those big triangular picks feel a little clumsy. I just couldn't get used to it.

@marcos same here. Love the yellows, but starting to appreciate the green from heavier songs. I like the "sharp" style as well.
A company called Mick's Picks has a model called the Spink. it's a green rubber composite of some sort. You almost can't tell the difference between this and plucking with fingers. Might not be enough attack for metal however...

I noticed when i want to play faster songs, that i do better with the thinner picks. It just depends on the song for me.
I use the purple gator grip too
The stubby is thick but the edge is more rounded so you can actually get a softer attack.
I love the tortex .60 but moved to the gators live because the chalk life saver
0.60 triangle tortex - my choice for 20+ years
My choice: 0.88 mm green tortex for almost everything and Big Stubby 3 mm for heavy music.
Love orange tortex for gigging with :) curious about gator grips in .58 though
for me a pick is a pick I use any picks except the bendy ones
I normally use Dunlop Jazz III XL series. Best of both worlds. Sufficiently thick, while still retains some flexibility. Occasionally I use Jazz III Ultex 2.0. Generally speaking I like the Jazz III form.

Duralin 1.0 m.m. played with a slight slanted angle.
Works best for me.
I used many, including a 12mm Vpick. I settled with the Jazz II

I just got James Hetfield’s white fang which is just a dunlop flow but expensive because of his name. It’s 1.14 and I love the grip and beveled edge.

Dunlop Nylon 1.25 for me sounds and plays best.
And what about steel picks? Would those work for bass? Just watched an advertise of some 30*26*0.3mm steel picks 🤔🧐
Pick marketing is laughable these days, but there truly aren’t any rules. Try it! If it sounds good, it sounds good!
I like the dunlop gator grip black 2.0 mm
I use the Triangle shape Dunlop Tortex 1.14 (Purple).
Tried the green one which I think is .70 to .90, it was Green, and i fucking hated it. Couldn't get the attack.
I used to play the Dunlop Green on guitar which worked for Guitar, but for Bass it just doesn't work (for me).
The 1mm Blue is OK.
1.5mm Dunlop is my choice.

For me, I largely use the Dunlop Big Stubby 3.0mm, occasionally I experiment with the Flow 4.2mm, however I'm thinking about a 1.5mm or 2.0mm in the future.
Update: After learning alternate picking, I've found myself preferring the Dunlop Max Grip 1.14mm pick. Still kinda THICC, but it allows for greater agility while keeping the pick firmly in the fingers.
Hey can u help me ,my bass's first fret is not playing but I can play the other ones what should I do....?(not able to go for repair because of lockdown here..)
Sounds like you need to ajust the truss rod and bridge saddles. There's a ton of videos on youtube explaining how to do it. Easy enough you can do it at home.
First fret doesn't make any note, but all other frets do? Sounds like you need to shim the nut up higher or something. That or replace it, or could be a cracked/broken nut. Hard to say.
