- Josh and Kalie from ExpatsEverywhere wanted to show you some smaller towns in the Algarve in Portugal. They visit Loulé and Olhão. Take a look at what those cities have to offer. They also break down the cost of living for four adults (remember Ami and G have joined the team) plus Cia of course, for the two weeks while they were in the Algarve.

Kalie is back! You did that entire video with Nick, no Kalie or Cia! Where is the dog? I'm really glad that Kalie was on top of things, noticed the value of the bus. Now I want you guys to close your eyes, picture the bus, with "Let's get Movin' " on the side, no one else on the bus except me, in the drivers seat and G and Mrs.G working on the gear, and the dog. A/C blasting, waiting for you to get in and I drive while you all relax! Can you visualize that? Yes!

Glad you liked Loulé and Olhão. Olhão is a fisherman town, it is not very “touristy” but that is changing, the last few years a lot of foreigners have discovered Olhão, and since they build the new hotel by the water there are tourists all year round. The French have discovered Olhão and are going there, they buy and renovate the little traditional houses, it's nice to see the old houses being revived.

I was in Loule on June 21st, and I loved it. It struck me as a very liveable town, and very authentic, which not all of the Algarve is. It has everything, apart from the fact the train station is a way out. I haven't been to Olhao yet, but I will. I don't think I would be tempted to live there though. Thanks for the video.
Thank you. We agree that Loulé seems authentic and there's something both authentic and rugged about Olhão but also touristy in a way. It's an interesting place that we'd need to spend more time in. - Josh & Kalie
Thank you, thank you, thank you! So happy you filmed/shared info on a couple of other towns! Particularly interested in Olhao as an affordable, up-and-comer. We prefer towns/smaller cities with low rise architecture - smaller, neighborhood feel. Sounds like Olhao has not been overdeveloped so there's potential!
You're welcome, Kathy. If you'd like warm summers and cool winters, maybe Beja is a place to check out. We're not quite sure just how cold it gets there but we do hear about houses not being insulated well so that could be a problem. It's a cute down with friendly people though. - Josh & Kalie

Great video of Loule. You guys comment on how rough it is on the stroller with the cobblestone sidewalks. Have you guys considered a runner's stroller with larger wheels that are like bike wheels? Raising 3 boys of my own, these types of strollers opened up where we could go, including off-road.

If they used the word “favela,” chances are they were from Brazil. Favela would be bairro da lata in Portugal (literally, tin neighbourhood), which is basically a shantytown. What you guys showed looked a couple of notches above that.
That is very far to be a ghetto and "Favela" is a not a word we Portuguese use, it's from Brazilian Portuguese. No way that neighborhood is shantytown (Favela in English).
I dont know the place in the video, but there are one very similar in Vila Real de Santo Antonio (East side of Algarve) and in Vila Real Sto António is where the fisherman live for generations.
PS: A young women can pass there alone at night that nothing going to happen, they are simple fishermen who try to support their families with little more than a minimum wage and live there for generations.
I was surprised at the world usage too because I only knew it from Brazil, but that's what they said. They nicely asked what we were filming and why we decided to come film that area. We've seen favelas in Brazil and it no comparison. - Josh & Kalie
What others said. I've lived in Brazil, know the word 'favela,' and that was nothing like the ones I remember from Brazil. That just looked like a small half-block that was in need of redevelopment.
I wonder whence those folks were in Brazil? I've read that Brazilians are the largest expat community in Portugal, which makes sense.
One of the great things about Olhão are the ferry connections to the small islands of Armona, Culatra and Farol. Truly awesome beaches, great seafood and typical places to rent. Try it next time :)

Saturday is Olhao’s most famous market of the entire Algarve!!! During the week in the autunno or winter is more peaceful

Everyone will assume you’re British, as they are VERY common there to vacation. So glad to see you went to Olhão. It’s very busy by the water because that’s usually where the tourists are and everyone from the islands go there to shop. Olhão is definitely growing. While we were there, my husband showed me all of the new buildings in place of the “favelas”. Favela is a Brazilian thing, but I’ve heard Portuguese people use it as a nickname of sorts for a rundown area, even though that’s not what it is. My husband nicknamed a shed we have here “favela” because of the way the old owners put it together. Lol. It was so cool to see that playground! I wonder if that’s what they were building while we were there!! I can’t wait to take the kids 😁
Hey, Elayne. Thanks for sharing. We were surprised by the word usage too. We've seen favelas in Brazil and this wasn't a favela. It would have been the Beverly Hills of favelas if so. Olhão had some interesting character. The waterfront properties look very nice. We'd like to see how they're equipped inside. We're guessing it's a lot of foreign buyers though. The tracker of every Euro spent, the one that carries the Euros, and the one learning to walk...love those designated job titles 😅 I thought you guys rented a car to get around the Algarve but it is good to see it's possible to take buses and public transport. I didn't stop in Loulé when I was in the Algarve...all I knew was that massive IKEA. Quite a charming town. I didn't quite get a good impression of Olhao except for the market area. I didn't realised they have a favela and thought that concept only existed in Brazil. I like Alentejo area and I think you guys will like it there too. Safe travels!
Hey! If you see what the Portuguese viewers were saying, they're saying the same as you regarding the "favela" usage. We were surprised as well, but it's what they said. Maybe because they thought I would understand it. IDK. Regarding the IKEA, by bus it's about halfway between Faro and Loulé city center. The little old towns of both Loulé and Olhão are nicer than Faro's in our opinion. We didn't walk through any rough areas in Loulé but certainly they exist, right? Nonetheless, it felt safe everywhere we went. As for the car, we have one now in Alentejo. - Josh & Kalie
@@ExpatsEverywhere Yeah, you definitely need a car to get around Alentejo. There are charming towns around the region but I was told it's hot and dry in the summer. I should head to Evora and meet you guys there for a day. Lol! With regards to favela in Olhao, maybe it could be a Brazilian interpretation as I haven't heard any locals using that word. There are shanty bits in Lisbon which many might not be aware but nothing like Brazil's favelas.

Looking forward to Alentejo! That will be one of our first road trips after arriving in Lisbon next week!!!! First up though is opening a bank account and finding an apartment!! Homeless in Lisbon for the moment! We do have a hotel booked!

WOW…I’m (selfishly) happy you all made it to Loulè and Olhao…two places on my list. So happy you found the market in Olhao…Veronica told me about it! I also think it’s great you took the train and bus. EVERYONE knows you can get around by car but the big question in my mind is can you get by w/o one? Of course, you can rent one but can you survive only w/the occasional rental? I’d rather not get one-if possible so appreciate your efforts. Loulè vs. Olhao? Hmm…looks like Olhao might have more every day conveniences but you gotta watch out what part of town you’re in. Loulè appears charming and looks like you can get there easily by bus for the occasional visit but might be too small to live(?). Tough one but I’d say Olhao. We live in the Algarve and don't think it's easy to live here without a car. It's very limiting otherwise. Sure, trains and buses are possible but not particularly convenient. And you've got it reversed about Loule and Olhao. Loule is much bigger and has more of a city feel than Olhao with more services, including hospitals and clinics.
Thanks, Larry. Yes, Loulé is the biggest municipality in the Faro disctrict. The city itself has just under 27,000 people with the municipality has 70k. Loule's hospital seems very influential in the region as we saw them sponsoring various things outside of Loule itself. www.algarve-portal.com/city.php?p=3&id=3
Both were very interesting to check out. Kalie and I got a really good impression of Loulé, but would like to spend more time where to figure out where the best area in the city would be to live. As for the car vs no car thing, it's really tough to say because even trying to consider train or bus travel, it would get pretty annoying in Loule for example to take a "taxi" to the train station and that taxi ride to cost the price of the train or more. If you plan on traveling every week/weekend, it might get frustrating to travel by train or bus. This is where Faro makes sense. If you're traveling one a month to a new place and you don't mind walking around your city, it could be doable.

I think I'd pick Olhao just because it is closer to the ocean. We like Loule and were there for the Saturday market. Mostly just more produce stands around.
We were opposite direction on the day. We were really impressed with the market activity. There were several foods stalls as well but we didn't try any. Thanks for sharing y'all. See you Saturday. 😉 - Josh & Kalie
Olhão surprised me, I hadn't heard a lot about it before. I was more interested in Loulé, but Olhão looks like it has a lot of possibility to it actually.

Great videos as always. I was wondering if you can be a little more specific on the prices. For example, you had your lunch with pork, rabbit and beer in you video. I would love to see the total bill for the lunch like that. It is more helpful to us than total spent on the trip, etc.

Thanks for your input. We thought it was alright too. We were actually surprised after adding it all up. It's going to be more for Alentejo though, we know that. We've rented a car here and we've found getting accommodations to be tricky. Normally, Alentejo should be much cheaper for housing. - Josh & Kalie
I don’t have rabbit meat for a few years, I used to hunt them here in New Jersey but every year we have less places for wildlife and I stopped, my son continues the tradition and is more in hunting deer, elk, etc.

With the pandemic, the mini bus circulated inside the city are free, to the train station maybe is not expensive or 1€, not sure. You also have the other buses to Loulé. Do you know that in Loulé there is the only muslin therms in Iberic Peninsula? Thanks for showing my beautiful city.
Love Loule and Olhao. You're on a very generous budget. Good for you. I wouldn't want to pay more than EU450.00 pm. Don't know what I'll end up with though. Are prices not a lot cheaper now?
If I may answer, no. Prices are not cheaper. It's high season. Are you talking about renting long term for 450 euros? I just don't think you'll find even a studio apt for that, not in the Algarve. Other rural parts of Portugal, yes.
It's not by choice, but by necessity. The apartment we rented for 3 weeks wants €1,000 for a longer contract, but honestly, it's not worth that much in our opinion. We've lived in nicer in Porto for less. We're finding accommodations very, very difficult on this trip. One reason is that we have a dog. The other reason at least in the south is high season. - Josh & Kalie
Cheap accommodations in the Algarve are a mirage, be it in low or high seasons. The prices go up but the quality doesn't follow, not saying that they're bad but paying double/triple the price for the same thing that didn't change in the last 10 years is bad. In the Algarve we have a saying: the Algarve is not for those that want it, it's for those that can afford it".
I have seen in your videos before, in portugal they serve just plain rice? Won't it be too hard to just eat plain rice without curry or some gravy?
That's an awesome question. One that we haven't seen before. Thanks! Yes, often times there's rice and in general it's plain or lightly flavored. As for eating it without curry, sauce, or gravy, yes, it happens. It really depends on what you order. It's pretty common to have a meat, little salad, fries (fried potatoes), rice, and a piece of bread served with a meal. Different than Asia, huh? - Josh & Kalie

Portuguese cuisine has many ways of serving rice. It can be plain, with peas, with curry, greens, seafood, etc. Depends on the dish.
Protip: uber is everywhere in the algarve! Your driver is just a couple clicks away

2000+ euros for 2 weeks? That seems expensive compared to what you were spending in Porto.
We think we're doing really well. That's €500 per person for 2 weeks! That doesn't included health insurance, phone and internet (hotspot) and the "business" expenses of running the channel, but we reckon we're doing well on this budget. - Josh & Kalie

"Favela" is Brazilian for "bairro da lata" illegal shacks built with whatever is available to be used as building material. What you showed is a fisherman's village, a poor neighborhood, not a "bairro de lata" or "favela."

Why you guys dont rent a car? A small car can be less than 800€/month.
That's the way Portuguese survive to live with wages about 800€/month and having lower wages, is buying in farmers market fresh and local fruit, vegetables and fish and always you can try negotiate the price to be a little lower.
Hey Arte, you'll see how a small car looks for us in a future vlog. We just rented one of a week here in Alentejo and it only just fits all of us and our gear. It's not pretty. We look like 4.5 clowns crammed into a circus car. - Josh & Kalie

But believe me when i was kid i live with my grandmother in Lamego, when my parents come from Switzerland (they work there), was my father, my mother, me my brother and my sister in a Mini Morris, all the stuff, cloths, toys to the beach, the tools and even some snacks where transport in the roof of the car.
And the car with only 2 doors we 3 in the back almost crushed there.
We travel from Lamego in a tiny car to the beach in the silver coast in São Martinho do Porto where we always had vacation (holiday) for 2 weeks.
