  • Whether it’s loud trucks, planes taking off or rattling freight trains: Noise makes people sick. But there are innovative solutions to reduce noise. This documentary presents some of them.
So-called "crossbars" are a great relief for many residents of noisy cities. These are new buildings that close gaps between rows of houses to keep street noise out.
In the Middle Rhine Valley, as many as 600 trains thunder over the tracks in a given day. In recent years, so-called whisper brakes have been installed on many rail cars to reduce rail noise. But for local residents, it’s not enough. They are calling for further "quiet” measures.
The start-up "recalm" wants to use "antisound" to reduce noise in mining vehicles. Until now, drivers had the roar and hum of the machines in their ears for eight hours a day, all but guaranteeing hearing loss. With the new high-tech system, low frequencies are reduced, leading to 50% less noise.
Owls are silent. That’s why they are the perfect model for Professor Jan Werner Delfs of the German Aerospace Center (DLR) in Braunschweig. Along with a colleague, the acoustics expert and aerodynamics engineer is researching the art of silent flight - and thus the possibility of making aircraft fly more quietly.

Honestly, i think it just comes down to budgetary problems. There were plans similar to this that was completely diminished due to its high demand so I wouldn't be surprised if the traffic problem continues in another decade or so. Not to mention, cars increase in the roads day by day so creating a solution like building another road infrastructure would only mean as a temporary gateway.

we need to get rid of zoning laws, and allow 3-5 story buildings to exist with the 1st story being businesses that aren't loud, etc. Then we can walk/bike anywhere without needing a car, everything will be denser if you don't need parking lots, so you don't need a car. and it'll help with co2 as well. add thorium nuclear reactor power for a real kicker.

one of the greatest sources of noise is lawnmowers. if u have a neighbor mow for 90 minutes, then a 2nd neighbor mow for 90 minutes then a 3rd, that's 4.5 hours of noise. manufacturers need to make quieter mowers, or go back to reel mowers which are nearly silent. reel mowers are better for the environment as no oil or gas, either. one reason people are so fat, is they sit on a mower for 90 minutes, instead of getting exercise using their body to push and sweat it off.

The worst of the worst are "enthusiasts" with their extremely loud mufflers on cars or motorcycles. The urban landscape is noisy enough without these blowhard's completely unnecessary loud choices in personal transport. No, "loud pipes" do not save lives but proper riding technique, safety gear, attitude, and especially road awareness does.
These antisocial blowhards often will be starting up their vehicles at 6am and drive through a suburban environment with no care at all. The transition to EV would be good alone to get rid of these vehicles.

Shouting children (but not crying babies), trains, planes, mowing lawns and constructions very early in the morning, and the noise of highways don’t bother me at all. It’s just bass from music (even if it’s soft), 2 songs playing at once (like at a busy pool), repetitive dull noises, repetitive coughing/sniffling, and chewing sounds that drive me insane. But I get irrationally angry and irritable specifically with the bass. I once lived in a poorer area and the amount of people with loud stereo systems in their vehicles was too much for me. I got another job just to be able to afford to live in an affluent area so there’s no more bass.

The problem is that low frequencies can't be stopped by just a little wall, the sound will easily bypass that. It can vibrate miles away if it's really bad. I had a problem in an old apartment where I used to live, the noise came from an industry 2 miles away, it was vibrating from the ground and my apartment was the resonance box literally. How do I know? Well, when there was a power outage at that industry my home was so damn quiet that lovely day. I thought I was crazy and just imagining the sound. Could do nothing about it so I had to move. The frequencies was measured to be below 100hz(measured with a microphone and enchanced in software, people still didn't believe me), most people that visited me couldn't hear it, only me and my father.

Bars and saloons partons are loud there are 12 with in 2 blocks of my apartment building. Firehouse up the street police station across the street. City Construction has been on going for 2 yrs. Once the drunks go home Morning traffic starts garbage trucks dump trucks school buses. I fell for the ad city apartment in trendy area....which means noisey loud no place to park no laundry....but it is trendy.

I can hardly believe that train brakes still act on the same running surface - disk brakes just seem obvious, especially as the wheels will stay circular and last longer as a result - cheaper and quicker to replace pads/disks/rotors than to rework the whole wheel surely? Building a wall to keep the noise out of a courtyard seemed completely obvious too, even without the use of sophistated equipment such as traffic cones to demonstrate the echo, and the sound cancelling technology demonstrated with the speakers has been available in headphones for decades - couldn't the digger driver just get a set of those and save himself over a thousand euros, or even just a set of ear defenders which should probably be mandatory anyway?

Imho having opposing train wheels NOT be hard welded to the same axel would reduce noise and wheel wear.

so, look into the issues of overcrowding. Why gentrify. of course the answer is one word - money/profit/greed
why let money overtake everything - that is the question.

Trains produce impact noises from their sheer weight that are difficult to mitigate. You can get rid of the screechy brakes but you'll still have the constant thump at every rail joint.

Dunno if it's because they're Germans. Eventhough i actually do get a feeling that's why. Either way. DW are extremely good at making stuff interesting. Whatever it is. Even how simple, or boring the toxic sounds.
When I see a thumbnail I'm like: " Well... I give it 10 min to entertain me".
But here I am.. Googling. Going down, deeper into the rabbit hole.
I don't mean specifically this episode. Cause this I knew was interesting.
But.. what I mean is. It happens almost every time, after I watch DW. Down the rabbit holes I go.
It's like VICE for grown ups😅
DW makes gold. Whatever they touch.
It's like when they chooses a topic. Someone blindfolded point at a random page in a encyclopedia. And no matter the word. The niche. They make it interesting🤙🏻

I must be the weirdo American over here because I can't sleep at all if it is too quiet. I had insomnia for a solid year after moving out and moving away from the trainyard where I constantly heard the freight trains, day and night, moving out or backing in (and all of the squeals and clicks that go with it). Regular traffic isn't enough!
