  • All the materials and tools i used to make both jigs here are simple.(for welding and blade grinding)
They look like all these that are out there, but with a few "tweaks" and ideas that i came up with. They are not fancy but,
the final designs are mine and i also took a lot of information from the net, magazine and books.
References were taken also from :
Fine Woodworking magazine No40 year 1983.This article was compiled from information contributed by
    three woodworkers: Wash Adams, from Richardson, Tex. ;
Doug Polette, a professor a t Montana State University in
Bozeman; and John Leeke, of Sanford, Maine.
    for welding:
    1)map gas
2)brass rod braze 3mm (you can get thinner if you can i just hammered it to make it thin.)
3)Borax (cleaning white powder which hepls for surface preparation)
Finaly please dont get disappointed from first welds and go ahead and make 5-10 weldings from a scrap blade.YOU WILL SUCCEED.
If i did it ,you can too!

Flatten some brazing rod and insert in the joint, apply heat and once it flows you are done, clean joint, no blob of brazing to grind.

That music is dead handy. Makes it almost impossible to comprehend anything being said. I guess some peoples world must be full of background music at every waking hour.

Sound was too low, but what a great job. Testing the different joints on the tensioning machine provides the full answer as to how strong a good weld can be. Many Thanks Mike!

I could hardly hear the audio over that goofy music but I did hear a mistake (a rather common one actually), normal brazing rods are BRONZE not Brass! Even if you could get actual brass to flow into the joint it would be much too brittle so this point is important since real brass rods in small sizes are available (usually not for normal welding/brazing however) so be sure your filler material is an actual BRONZE rod meant for brazing!
It's extremely common for folks to mistakenly call brazing rods BRASS instead of BRONZE but the difference is critical! For those who are likely to argue that common brazing rods are brass I suggest you look it up first.

Ingenious brazing jig! Nowadays welders are cheap but the jig is key to a quality joint and that design would also work with my TIG machine (but I like torch brazing anyway after years brazing fabric cutting dies, brazing is tough and shock-resistant as is hard soldering).
Best to skip the music in future as viewers for this sort of thing are here for the content which is excellent. Very well done otherwise with the camera and lighting.
I use a flap disc on an angle grinder which polishes as it cuts. An 80 grit is versatile and while angle grinders are extremely useful you can also mount flap discs to a bench grinder as I did to mine. How will be obvious.

This is really nice work! Minor improvements could be made: 1) Sound is VERY low, I have a little amp. here and everything is turned up all the way, I can just barely make out what you're saying! A small thing about brazing is that all kinds of brazing and silver solder alloys come as foils and ribbons, this is very nice, and you can just cut it with some small shears. You only want a tiny bit as you know. I try to get a piece of foil and put it IN the joint, under the flux. I've had very mixed results, sometimes the blades are strong and last indefinitely.

The tensile testing was really extra! I might make a lab out of this someday. Even in a small number of samples you can see some amazing possibilities, it's a big surprise to find that a brazed blade can have the whole strength of the stock material in practice. I have seen some videos of silver-solder being used on plain butt joints, and here we see why that can work. I like your little helper better, this joint preparation takes up most of the time in this process and I think accounts for most of the mysterious failures! According to what I read, it seems that a nicely done butt joint would be good enough, but I haven't tried it, and it seems so hard to believe! I think I'll make this jig you show us just to be able to try different ways.

Good information, better if you could have talked over what you're showing.
Did you leave a small gap between the scarfed joints to allow for the capillary action of the brazing material?
    Thanks for sharing.

Brazing not welding, no one welds on sheet metal that easily. I worked in auto body repair and thin-gauge metal is almost impossible to fuse without distortion, holes, imperfections, etc.
    Good job by the way.

@@rachelbenzema7822 the reason ouse brass rod is because it's harder .it makes a great bond.silver is softer.but easier to use( melting and brazing)
