I recommend My First Summer in the Sierra by John Muir, who is one of the fathers of conservation in my area. It's a fun one and he just describes his adventure while hiking new forested areas and talks about his spiritual connection with nature. It's so good.
i have houseplant survival manual too :) super special to me, my godmother gave it to me over a decade ago when i was 18..i think it was my first houseplant book!
I read Braiding Sweetgrass for one of introductory wildlife classes and it was very eye-opening and makes you appreciate earth, the environment, wildlife, and relationships much more than you can imagine. I also had the privilege of hearing Robin talk about TEK ( traditional ecological knowledge) and indigenous peoples connection to place. Highly recommend to everyone!
Such a great video. Thank you for making it. Not only was it super interesting to watch, but also you made me want to dive into the world of plant books. I really appreciate your vlog channel, because you honestly are the best youtuber ❤❤
My fave book period is Prodigal Summer by Barbara Kingsolver, it’s fiction, about our relationships with the land and nature and others and it really is just such a sweet, beautiful story where nature feels like one of the central characters. Highly recommend!!! Honestly any book by Kingsolver, she’s a biologist and a gardener and a prolific writer and I just love her and wish she was my auntie lol
I recently received ✳️Wicked Plants: The A-Z of Plants That Kill, Maim, Intoxicate and Otherwise Offend ✳️ as a birthday gift and I'm so in love with it, it's not even funny 😩💚💚💚
I loved this video. I had some plant books from my mom but I gave them away cause they were “old”. And I hadn’t started my plant collecting and loving. Now I’m kicking myself. But you’ve given me the impetuous to get some plant care books.
In one of your old shows you showed your plantopedia book I soo loved it and I got it. Thanks you for sharing it. No I got it because you were expired me to get it.
My husband bought me a book called Growing houseplants and it’s a book from Kew Gardens which is a Royal Botanic place here in the UK. I was always hopeless with houseplants before but it inspired me to try and do better and ignited my passion for it.
My first, and one of my favorite, planty books is "How to Make a Plant Love You" by Summer Rayne Oakes. It's so good and was a great introductory book. I also love "Root, Nurture, Grow" which focuses a lot on different propagation methods, and also has some general care, an index of different houseplants and basic care needs, and even some DIY projects thrown in too!
This was such a cute video 😊 There’s a few I definitely would like to read. Specifically, The Hidden Histories of Houseplants looks really interesting. And it was so sweet you shared you read that after your thrillers to help fall asleep. Thanks for sharing with us Fern 💚
Hi Fern, love your collection!! I have both of Hilton Carter's plant books, the Terrain houseplant books, all of Martha Stewarts indoor and outdoor garden books along with The Gaines family childrens garden book. And that's just a few, not to mention my Orchid books, and I am currently looking for The Orchid Thief, I think its any orchid grower should have in their plant book collection!!!
If you think plant care has changed you should check out a fish care book from a decade or three ago! I’ve found a few at the thrift and it’s really wild lol
I loved this video. Makes me want to look through my plant books, from houseplants, roses, etc. Knowledge is power! I live in upper NY and it is hot, 86. Soon I will be checking out yard sales on weekends to find planty stuff. Where you live are yard sales popular? I love books so much, and your selection was so interesting.
I bought the PLANTOPEDIA when you had the giveaway.. It's a stunning book so thanks for sharing all your books. I have started my tomatoes seeds, hot and normal peppers, zucchini and cukes.. Too soon here in Toronto to plant them but its been 24-25 this week so seedlings are in the greenhouse 👏💚 my fav book besides Plantopedia is The Hidden Life of Trees..
I’m just back from the library to pick up, If a Poem Could Live and Breath, A Novel of Teddy Roosevelts First Love. Can’t wait to get into it. I have a bunch of houseplant books and just turned down two, old (1970’s) I’m kicking myself 🤦🏼♀️
Girl! You’re gonna make me poor! 😂 I’ve already gotten some new plants (and have updated my wish list) based on plants I’ve seen in your videos, and now I need/want new books as well!? Keep up the good work! 🙏🌱
I can't wait for Not Another Jungle by Tony Le-Britton to come out, this month I think. I heard him talking to Jane Perrone on her podcast, immediately ordered a copy! You have a lovely collection 💖
The New Plant Parent is the very first plant book I got too!! I don't know if you've read The Well Gardened Mind by Sue Stuart-Smith, but I'd highly recommend. It's a beautiful read about how working with nature can help transform our health, wellbeing and confidence.
‘The drunken botanist’ by Amy Stewart. It sounds like it is somewhat similar to the featured ‘The hidden histories of houseplants’. The author has a lot of knowledge in botany and anthropology. The book tells the stories of most popular plants to make alcohol from😅. The book goes plant by plant in alphabetical order. In the very beginning Amy says, that if you have a favorite plant, the humans already have tried to make alcohol form it 😅. Each entry is full of botanical knowledge and cultural background of the most popular drinks. Very entertaining. And makes for nice conversations at parties. 😊
I recommend Botany In A Day, fantastic book that teaches you about recognizing and identifying plants. Gaia's Garden is a great resource for permaculture gardening. Lastly, The Apothecary's Garden is a beautiful fiction, written by a Canadian author, set in Belleville Ontario.
I never knew you were a Thrifter. I could tell you were a major bookworm. I feel like the older books were more informative starting out in my collection deffinetly learned by their latin names than common lol. I felt like the new the books are not as informative but more decorative and focus more on the popular plants but not Persay exotics.
Such a great video Fern! I’m really interested in the book for balcony gardening. That’s my type of growing setup living in the city. 🧑🌾 🌆 I absolutely love Braiding Sweetgrass! I’ve been reading it outside on nice days and it’s really grounding and touching. It’s made me cry in the park a few times. 😅❤ I also love colllecting plant books and specifically on magick. If you are interested, I would suggest “Garden Witchery” by Ellen Dugan - one of my fav. books. 🌿✨
Ok I need a "Storytime by Fern" in my life. Having you read us (and Olive) a book would be amazing!

Just bought two tonight @ target Wild Creations & Living wild both by Hilton Carter …. We have no book stores
Semiosis by Sue Burke if you’re interested in science fiction at all. It’s about super intelligent plants.
I have a few planty books. My favorite is becca's book. Houseplants for beginners by Becca de la paz.
Hey I dont know if you’ve read it, but I enjoyed Wings by Aprilynne Pike. Its a series about fae who are actually plants. Really cool!
Just you is a great video too
I recommend Botany In A Day, fantastic book that teaches you about recognizing and identifying plants. Gaia's Garden is a great resource for permaculture gardening. Lastly, The Apothecary's Garden is a beautiful fiction, written by a Canadian author, set in Belleville Ontario.
I recommend a book that covers a topic close to plant life, "the secret life of fungi" by Aliya Whiteley
Fern where did you got that gorgeous shirt from? 😍
