- As the 2021 regular season comes to a close, San Francisco and Los Angeles- the teams with the top two records in the game- are battling it out for the NL West title. The Dodgers- Giants rivalry is one of the fiercest and longest standing in all of sports, dating back to when they were both in New York in the 19th Century. And with so much on the line in this final week…..and then a possible meeting in October, the rivalry is ready to add another chapter to its long and storied history.

I think it would be cool to do a one off like the Field of Dreams where they play each other in New York (a Polo Grounds replica maybe). I know theres still some generations of fans who grew up there and root for them

As a Giants fan, I just want to say that SD vs LA was NEVER the biggest rivalry in baseball. I love our rivalry.

I'm a die hard Dodgers fan, and I'm gonna be honest, I respect the Giants. They have an amazing logo, organization, fans, players (for the most part), and a beautiful stadium. I think all Giants fans and Dodgers fans can agree that our lil bro in San Diego cant put up a good fight.

@@oscarponce6045 Another Giants fan - and this is the best rivalry in the game, by far. I know Yankees/Red Sox gets most of the hype, but even with the recent run of success by the Red Sox, that rivalry is still historically lopsided in favor of the Yankees. (Same with the other "great" historical rivalry, the Cardinals and Cubs. It's just no contest. The Cubs win for having a cooler stadium in a bigger city...and the Cardinals have a huge advantage everywhere else.)
Giants/Dodgers? The Giants have 8 World Series, the Dodgers 7. But in California it's 6-3 LA. ...But five of those six are at least 30 years old, while the best player from the 3 recent Giants championships is still active with the team. ...But the Dodgers have many more divisional titles - I don't have a count, but I know the Dodgers have finished in 1st place way more frequently than the Giants in the divisional era. The Giants have the overall head-to-head advantage if we go back to the New York years, but it's close, and again the Dodgers would have the advantage in California. I think the Giants have the best ballpark in the game, but Dodger Stadium is a classic. I also think the Giants have better announcers, but that Vin Scully was the best of all time (and he grew up a Giants fan).
Basically, it's a real rivalry. Both sets of fans can find ways to make the rivalry look like it's in their favor, but neither set can make it look like their team is dominant (at least, not over more than a few seasons at a time). And both sets of fans probably had a moment of fast forwarding through bits of this video, not wanting to be reminded of painful losses to...THOSE @%$&ing guys. It's the best.

Saying this as a tri-stater, I think the fact that this rivalry survived both teams moving coast to coast makes it a greater rivalry than the yankees vs. the redsox. Plus the number of penants and world series the yankees have won makes that rivalry rather lopsided. I say this hating the yankees more than just about anything I can think of. I detest the yankees, but I can't ignore their historic dominance. And now that the redsox cheated to win in 2018 I hate them almost as much. Plus the overall importance of the Dodgers and Giants bringing baseball to the west coast can't be understated. It was sickening when it happened, but for baseball to grow they had to leave

Growing up as a giants fan, there hasn’t been any other games I’ve enjoyed more than The Giants Vs Dodgers games. So much hype and just all out amazing players. And the fan base is astonishing on both sides

As a Die Hard Dodgers fan, I have to admit that the Giants had a fantastic regular season. You guys never gave up. I literally watched every game that the Dodgers and the Giants played since the All-Star game. What a season this has been for both teams! This 2021 season has been the most fun I've ever had following the NL West! I'm pulling for the Giants, but the Dodgers being able to throw Kershaw, Scherzer and Beuhler at the short division series is going to be fearsome. They seem to be a team configured specifically for crushing the post season.
Need to pitch better than recently though...Belt being out is a real smack in the face for the Giants.

Dodgers fan here and this is a very challenging season no doubt. I knew that the giants would've bounced back and answered us when we won the world series in 2020. They have a strong team I must admit. I'd like to see them in the NLDS.

I recently read the 2010 Wille Mays biography by James Hirsch. Starting with his first season in 1951 with the New York Giants through his last two years returning to the Mets one season at a time through Willie's mind was great. I also learned much of his personal life going through the seasons. Being old enough to begin following the Cardinals each year since 1960 I really enjoyed seeing him play. I think the Giants games of the 1960s with Marichal, Mays and Mc Covey and the Dodgers game with Koufax, Wills, and Drysdale were my favorite matchups with the Cardinals. It was great when Cepeda came to the Cards for a few years from the Giants. I enjoyed seeing some highlights from the book I just read.
Just wanted to add in 1962 the Cardinals swept the Dodgers 3 games in the last series of the year forcing a 3 game playoff between the Giants and Dodgers as they tied for first and the Giants then won the pennant. In 1965 the Cardinals beat the Giants 2 out of 3 at the end of the year knocking the Giants out of first and the Dodgers won the pennant and world series. This was mentioned in the Willie Mays biography.
MLB sure tried to push the narrative of a Dodgers/ Padres rivalry. This season and series proved the Giants ad Dodgers longtime rivalry is alive and well. Both teams left it all on the field and had a showdown for the ages. Respect the real NL West rivalry.

I've been a Giants fan since 1981, when I went to my first game at 5. I have a deep rooted hate for the Dodgers. With that said, I respect this iteration of the Dodgers. My issue is with the press, MLB network included. The Giants and Dodgers have given baseball the best pennant race in the the last 30 years. I can't remember anything this exciting. Yet, all the sports media talks about is the Yankees and Red Sox. This isn't the "best rivalry in baseball", though it is one of the best ones. It's the best on the east coast, and the east coast is the best coast apparently to the media.
This is potentially the first time the Giants and Dodgers will play each other in the playoffs. How in the hell is this JUST NOW getting any national attention?

130 years as rivals, hard to beat that. Long time, life time Dodger fan. Moved to the Bay area in the late 80's and met many a Giants fan. Still good friends with them, we talk trash and strategy all year, that is why this is the best game. Always friendly and enjoyable throughout the season having a beer at the bar. In the Pacific northwest now and the coverage of this potent rivalry is minuscule. It is a shame really. Do away with inter-league play. Play those games against your division opponents. Become a true champion of your division.
