- In search of beauty is a film about the search for those secret hidden gems that are so often missed by photographers when out with the camera, no matter what the light is doing. It's about being present and slowing down and I for one, never get bored of this search and in this video I share the reason why that is. The video also shows that it's possible to get great images of bigger scenes in harsh light conditions, how to deal with harsh light on small scenes and last but not least, how I rate my images from 1 - 5 and in this video, I do just that.
Love 1 and 3 ... the joy of the unexpected, expertly taken.
Thank you both very much.
The uplifting branches in the first image elevate my mood.
Cheers Paul
Beautiful images 😍😍😍
The birch pictures are stunning. I especially like the last picture.
Thanks Anna.
Really atmospheric image of birch, painterly! Another inspirational film - thank you.
Thank you for watching and commenting. The fist one was a lucky break for sure.
There's nothing that proves your point of a treasure hunt better than going out when the conditions are 2-star at best and you come home with some 3-4-5-star images. The images that started and ended the video were beautiful but I think my favorite was the one of the Alder cones and moss (Alder...Larch..."A rose by any other name"!) Really liked your linen light diffuser. I use a grey umbrella which mimics an overcast sky nicely but your linen invention is much easier to carry. Another superb vlog Simon.
Thank you William. I have had that piece of cloth for over 20 years. That's what I call value for money.
Absolutely love that first image. Thanks for another great video.
Cheers Trevor
Loved the Spring green shot!
Wow. That was my reaction to that first shot. Nicely presented too, it really captures that feel of magic with new spring leaves. Every year I hope for an image opportunity like that and think melancholy thoughts about the number of springs I have left, which makes the beauty that much more precious. Love what you said about the search for images like that. So elemental to being human, like foraging, but for beauty. Lovely lovely pace again to this video Simon, real artistry there. And then that last image. Another wow.
Many thanks Richard. You have some nice opportunities at your end too. I just watched your trailer. Richard Creek looks lovely.
@@SimonBoothPhotography Thanks Simon, I am very fortunate to be surrounded by so much nature here. I always appreciate your knowledge of the plants and animals and the way you work it so naturally into your videos. Part of what gives them such depth and resonance.
Another great watch and superb images as always 😃 the cones on the moss was my fave. Stunning!
Thanks again Gary. It came out extremely well that one.
What a way to start the day absolutely beautiful photo Simon as always all photos were amazing but the first on of the tree would be a 5 star rating for me. Thank you for sharing your video
Thank you John
Beautiful images and great video explaining your process. Great work!
You must be all caught up now. New one this Sunday ☺️
Wow, stellar photos. I love the almost abstract images. Very inspiring. Thanks.
Glad you like them Thomas
Great images Simon. Even Van Gogh would be proud of the last image, it was stunning.
That's very kind. Perhaps like him, I will be better appreciated in death, unless I get the silver play button. That would be nice.
Great job in them harsh conditions mate! That first shot was really nice. Great spot!
Cheers again Tom
Three really good images there Simon. I especially like that first one. It's very impressive how you 'see' shots such as that - the photographer's eye to the fore!
Patience and a calm mind is key to seeing I think Gary
The shot of the cones really grabbed me, lovely!
Thanks Billy
All great images Simon. Hard to pick a favorite but I think that first one gets my vote.
Thank you Christopher. It was a lucky spot that started the day off well.
I believe my eyes are always scouting for the wider scenes but miss the small intimate scenes. When you highlighted the cones in the moss I was blown away. Thank you!
Glad it helped you Tara. These little gems often save my day.
Glad it helped you Tara. These little gems often save my day.
Excellent video & Nicely presented...
Thank you
That last image is definitely a four star. Super image.
Pleased to see that you are holding up well after your last surgery.
Thanks Martin. As I type, i'm getting over another. Just out of hospital yesterday!
Thanks for the video. Beautiful set of images. Love your process. Keep up the good work.
Will do Larry
Great images in harsh light conditions. I can´t decide which is the best. Maybe the last one :-).
Cheers. I'm the same, not sure?
Excellent video Simon, and great images. Thanks you so much! 👍👏❤
As always, thanks for watching Yujin
Great film Simon. 3 very different images; the last one is my personal favourite but they all show the magical green of the new spring growth.
That magical green is so fleeting isn't it. In a matter of weeks it becomes so dull by comparison.
Wonderful images and tips as usual. So thanks again.
Glad you like them!
Wow, you sure work hard for some of your photos (larch cones)! Beautiful! It’s so nice to hear the birds.
Thanks Karen. I have to confess, while the first shot came easy, the second took some time and when it came to the last, I had all but given up but then it appeared when I was least expecting it. It's just how it goes and it's why I liken it to a treasure hunt. You just never know when!
That stacked photo of the seed pods on lichen is especially superb.
Nice and sharp for sure. The stack worked out really well.
Beautiful set of images Simon. Wonderful to be able to happily wander in such a place. Good on you.
Dunwich is a lovely area Denise.
You really are an artist with the camera, beautiful images ✨✨✨
I wish I believed it. I constantly strive for better but there's only so much time when you work full time in another occupation.
Again 3 superb images Simon thanks for sharing
Cheers Dave
Lovely film again Simon 👍
The first "by chance" image is beautiful and really peaceful looking.
Great spot for the close up, and if we're going to continue with the artist theme... I think the third image reminds me of Monet's work. I can imagine it covering an entire wall in a gallery ♥
I do love an artist reference Jeff, thanks again for commenting.
Hello from Ukraine, thank you for great atmosphere!
Thanks for visiting the channel and for watching this film. I sincerely hope it managed to divert your attention from the horrible situation you find yourself in, even if only for a short time.
That last image is defo my fave… very abstract… i love when photography almost verges away from a straight picture and looks more like a piece of art… you’re channel is so inspirational to me that way… I defo need to add a macro lens and a bit white linen to my bag when I head to the woodland
Thank you. That's very kind.
Hi Simon, I would rate the last picture with a 5. Really loving the way you are looking at your surroundings. And I totally agree: the search is the goal and not the picture itself.... Best regards, Wim
Thanks Wim. I suppose from the RUclips perspective, the search comes with a bit of pressure, but so far they keep turning up
1st image exceptional, you have what I call , The seeing eye. An artists ability to differentiate the ordinary view into something of simple beauty.
Thanks Maurice. I certainly feel like I have been in training most of my adult life for these.Practice has certainly helped me see better.
All 4 stars in my judgement Steve!. Number one may be even a five? Thanks for getting out and about again and sharing your creative genius.
Steve :-) I've been called words. Thanks David, or should I say Gary? I do it all the time 😂
@@SimonBoothPhotography Sorry Simon! I must have watched you after my other hero Steve O’Nions and got a bit mixed up!
Great photos! You are the one who inspires me the most!
Why thank you very much Martha
Excellent Simon, great images and great narration!
Thank you
a beautiful start to your day... those little reminders to slow down... great advice... cones and mosses are a great story for the cycle of life... wonderful diffusion screen for an easy make and take... think I have a new project for my sister the sewer... the last image is not substantially different compositionally from the first one with 3 beautiful rectangular bands of colour... Thanks for sharing your morning wander in the woodlands 🙂
Thanks Dave for you perspective on the film. And it was my pleasure.
Most enjoyable! That first tree is a winner! And last trees / glen I never would have seen that- I would have written it off as too chaotic. Sigh. I'm on a mission for the cloth- it's such a simple but useful tool. Now I just need a sewing machine...
I've had that cloth for over twenty years and it's the only bit of kit that I still have from back then. That's what I call value for money.
That middle image is amazing. Thank you for sharing.
Glad you liked it! I suspect it would look great in one of your frames.
Love to watch your way to see the nature 👍🏼 and it gives me a lot of inspiration 😃
Making the films gives my eye plenty practice. Thank you Karin.
impressive amount of details in your cones and moss picture, I really like the composition too!
The beauty of a successful stack is incredible sharpness. Thank you.
I loved the last image! You have an amazing talent.
Cheers Russ, that's a nice thing to say. Very encouraging indeed.
Very nice shots there Simon and I am always curious to hear your thought patterns !! Rainy weather in Germany today, so it's nice to have a virtual walk through the woods with you and your cameras .... really like the last shot because the transition of the light is so smooth, it's o relaxing ! Thankx
Thanks again Herbert. It was a good productive day out that one.
I love your Macro photography Simon. Thank you for sharing!
Thanks for watching
Stunning first image
Cheers Ian
Nice images Simon. really liked the first one..
Thanks Glyn
Another good video, certainly helps towards composition and seeing a picture! Cheers.
Glad it helped Alwyn
Well you searched and yes you found, fabulous images Simon and as a bonus you identified the green woodpeckers call which I've heard but didn't know the identity of the bird. All your videos are 5*
They seem to be following me everywhere this year!
Lovely film Simon, so relaxing. I enjoyed the first image and would definitely give it a 4 ⭐️ rating!
It was getting up that way Richard, thank you.
I am always in awe of your eye for images Simon. Love the three but the last is magic. Mr Heaton described you as a photographer who consistently knocks it out of the park - oe words the that effect. This video is fresh evidence!
Thanks John. I wonder if he still watches? Another plug would be good :-)
Fantastic simon Fantastic 👏
Cheers Gary
It’s not just me then, lm always looking for shots while driving the wife’s always telling me to watch the road not the scenery! Love that shot with the soft grass in front of the glowing birch!
We disasters waiting to happen Neil!
Another wonderful video, Simon! Thank you!
Thanks Jim
You should consider becoming a landscape photographer, lol. Love the first 2 shots. As always great videos and photos as always.
If only 😀
Thoroughly enjoyed watching your video whilst eating my breakfast and WoW such beautiful images Simon. I can relate to what you said about searching for images.. Yesterday I was out with my camera just after sunrise looking for pockets of light through the trees hitting the wild flowers and grasses that are around and also highlighting the beauty of the new leaves appearing on the trees. I always feel so chilled out after watching your videos, thanks for sharing them.
Glad they hit the spot Lynn. I try to make films that I would want to watch myself. Videos that make me want to be there.
Excellent video Simon. I really love the first and the last images. I am usually "scared" of shooting in harsh light but you've shown that it is possible. Thank you! The white piece of cloth is a great idea. Better than carrying a dedicated diffuser. Thank you, all the best to you! Glad you have recovered well.
I think it's a case of ignoring what the light is doing and pay more attention is what it's being complimentary to.
Great work again! And I like your how-to with the linnen cloth.
It's over 20 years old that cloth and the only item from back then that I still use...or have even!
I adore the larch cones image. Not only is it captured so well, but I have a habit of picking them out on the forest floor as I explore my local areas. There is always a cone in my coat pocket somewhere ha so it resonated with me. I like the use of the cloth to help diffuse the light, not something I've seen someone use before but a great idea!
Hi Courtney. That cloth is the oldest bit of kit that I still use. It's over twenty years old, possibly older than you?
Some lovely shots, has given me some inspiration to go out and capture my own at a time of year I normally struggle. Thank you.
Great stuff Adrian, never waste a moment if you have one.
Another fab video (film!) Simon. I'm struggling now to do long hikes and hilly stuff so with your inspirational videos I am getting out more and more into woodland, which in turn slows me down, to get more intimate shots. (I have yet to capture a 3 and above star image lol)... Thank you so much for sharing your wonderful photography. I'm now off out to a local woodland!!
It's nice to just slow down isn't it John. When I go on a regular walk now with friends, I find it all a bit stressful!
The first image is fantastic blew me away
Thank you
I really liked that last image. It's well observed and well executed and it also works, for me at least, as an abstract. Not a genuine #4? You're a hard man to please!
I nearly always find something wrong David
Nice video. I also love the search, but I often find myself in slight panic mode when the light hits just right. “Everywhere looks beautiful. Where to shoot?” After firing off some panic shots, I get focused and my searching feels more relaxed.
I think that can happen to everyone Shaun, even me.
What can I say that I haven't praised endlessly in your other videos. Lovely images and a very enjoyable video, backed up by snippets of knowledge of the environment/ecosystem. Fantastic Simon.
Thank you David, glad you liked the film.
I watch a lot of landscape photography videos, but yours are quickly becoming my favorite. Looking broadly at that first scene, I know that I would have walked right past the opportunity you found. You are teaching me how to see better. And you're teaching me that a worthwhile image can nearly always be found in the woodland no matter the conditions. Thank you!
That's nice to hear Bob. Thank you.
I like it, most of the third one! Thanks.
Thanks for commenting Petr
I was just thinking, why doesn't Simon rate his photos as he was just talking about his rateing system and there at the end of the video are his photos of the day rated. I find rating photos is a great way of showing us your thoughts on your images. Keep the videos coming Simon they are great.
Glad you found the ratings useful Neil, cheers.
Such a wonderful video. These videos remind us to never take nature's beauty for granted.
Absolutely we shouldn't
Hi Simon ! Great video !!!🤝
Thank you
Very nice Simon - think my preference is your first image - lovely soft/ diffuse light. Excellent as always - have to say whenever I watch one of your videos it always makes me want to pick up my camera and go out which is really frustrating cause normally I watch them in my lunch hour at work... Anyway, keep up the good work - cheers👍
My advice is ditch the day job...if only I could take my own advice eh!
@@SimonBoothPhotography haha.. I wish although I must say I am thinking about it more & more.. maybe even cutting to a 4 day week would be bliss.... ;-)
What a wonderful way to start a new week - with a tea and a new video of yours! Thank you! I enjoyed it as always. And the first photograph was my favorite! A nice reminder to look out for scenes like this. I often focus on macro shots or try to capture a whole scene and forget to watch out for composition in between!
Everything and anything should be on your table Susanne. New film this Sunday to start your next week with.
Great images Simon! You've inspired me to go out and search for those harder to find "back lit" scenes and work with the harsh light. With the right composition - those lighting conditions can be spectacular! Well done! I give all 3 images a good 4 thumbs up.
Good on you Alan. Sometimes it just takes time to walk past the right spot...then it just leaps out at you.
Hi Simon, wishing well. Extraordinary eye/vision/images. If your "3 stars" are 3 stars wonder what the 5's are? Wow. Keep the lessons coming. Bob.
Hi Bob, they tend to be images that I cannot fault, which are few and far between to be honest!
@@SimonBoothPhotography Hi Simon, I know what you mean; seems like the “5’s” or “10’s” are almost like a gift.
@@robertfleckenstein5031 spot on.
I like each photo from this trip, but the first one of the birch in the morning light with the tan grass below is easily my favorite. I know you have rated that shot as a 3/4 but in my eyes it is easily a 4 and possibly even a 5!
That's my opinion too. Inspirational, as always :-)
I will addd why it's not quite a four for me. I would have preferred a tad more of the upper part of the tree, which was not possible because of the horizon line. It's not much but it would have made all the difference. I would have liked slightly less of the grass too, but I wanted to retain the aspect ratio. I tried 6:17 but this was too slim.
Thanks Jonathon
I consistently enjoy both your photography and the demeanor of your presentations. Regarding your metal detecting interest, did you watch the British sitcom "Detectorists"? We watched every episode and were disappointed when another season was not renewed.
Thanks for your kind words. I did watch the series and loved it. I would be surprised if it never came back. I watch quite a bit of detecting on RUclips. This channel here is one of my favourites for the way it is calmly presented. ruclips.net/user/TerraGermaniaTG
How interesting, I used to be a keen metal detectorist also Simon, and a keen fisherman. It’s the search for the special coin/fish/image clearly that attracts us
fancy that Jamie...I was a fisherman too.
Another fabulous video Simon, you are so inspiring, every time I watch your videos I want to get out with my camera 😊Andy
Thanks Andy. It's great that the films do this 👍
Beautiful images and so inspiring, as always. Thank you.
Many thanks Steve
Genius at Work!
Not sure about that Rick but cheers for the compliment
Nice images Simon, you did well in those harsh light conditions. I think this sort of light lends it's self to more abstract photography
I tend to just go with whatever the light seems to compliment and the most. Never say never I suppose is the lesson here.
I'm so glad I've found your channel some time ago. Great videos to relax and appreciate the art. The first picture in my opinion deserves at least a 4,5 ; it's gorgeous!
Thank you. It was a pleasing find for sure
Your work is visually stimulating be it 3, 4, or 5* Simon.
Thanks Ian...appreciated.
Stunning images again, Simon. The glow on the first tree, the colour graduation in the 3rd and you really can't go wrong with the 'larch' 😉 cones as a subject. Thanks for taking us along for a wander.
Glad you liked the wander Kerry. Thank you for watching.
Simon, again lovely work. Just love your way about the entire process. Very inspiring. Thanks for sharing your time and thoughts once again showing us what beauty is just lurking out there to be found! Keep snapping and sharing! Many thanks…
Thanks for commenting Alan. Glad you liked the film.
Absolutely beautiful ❤️
😍😍 xx
Really amazing photos here Simon, I love your channel!
I noticed on your website that you use the Pentax smc 45-85mm f4.5, and the Pentax smc 80-160mm f4.5, how do you like those lenses for digital work with your 645z?...I'm considering getting them for my GFX but seeing as how they were made for the film camera I question their resolving power.
Thanks for watching the video. In terms of the lenses. I actually prefer them to the new HD lens that I have, the 28-45mm, which is designed for digital. The older lenses seem to give a lovely analogue look to the file, which I really like. It's like a drum scanned piece of film. I actually didn't know that they could fit the GFX...interesting!!
Simon! Again you suprised me in positive way !! (how do you do that ? ;-) )
Your two first photos were stunning, and this moss with cones was messmerising. Saing that, I definitely did not expect third photo anytyhing at list such good. How much I was wrong !! Third photo is just as simply as possible, but even though, it draws my attention and does not releases it a bit !
Congrats mate, you have a real talent !! And thank for sharing :)
Awe thank you Krzysztof. I only wish typing your name was as easy as taking photographs. My goodness :-)
Thanks again, Simon, for another lovely video. I agree with the 3-4 star scores on #'s 1 & 3 but the moss image is inspirational and makes me want to learn to focus stack, so I am giving it 5-stars. There are excellent lessons for us in #1 and #3 in that you are looking at 'parts' first while most look at the 'whole'. Again, it is about training our eyes counter-intuitively (hope that makes sense).
I think I gave it 3 stars because whilst it was a nice find, it wasn't particularly artistic in terms of seeing something special. More representational really.
Number 1 is gorgeous.
Dave
Thanks Dave
Thank you for adding the ratings to your own photographs. That you cast a critical eye on your work frees me up to do the same on mine. member
Glad it was helpful David. I mostly do it subconsciously.
Man I am ready to get back out and shoot its been 13 weeks since my last outing and iam getting ancie for some quality shutter time in .grate vid like usual thanks for putting it out thair .
13 weeks! Good grief you must be ready!
@@SimonBoothPhotography oh boy am I thair where so many plans of stuff I wanted to shoot this year but I don't know if I'll be able to at this rate.
Fascinating video Simon and nice to hear how you rate your images. I would be interested in where you search for your woodland reference material. I'd love to better understand the woodland in my area and the types of species that grown around them. Any tips in future videos would be gratefully received.
Hi Stuart, try magic map for England woodland areas. You can filter ancient and replanted so it's good for finding quality areas around you. The ancient tree inventory map is also useful. This takes you to very old trees but often they are within nice woodlands themselves.
New growth always has that lovely green glow that you captured so well in your first image. It speaks volumes for the way you are very observant and see what the camera sees and can capture. I also think that we all have that point in a given day where we are thinking of where we are no longer paying attention to our surroundings, and our minds are engaged elsewhere. In this case setting up the camera for the video brought you back to "seeing" and being present in the moment. Do you have any other suggestions or techniques for refocusing and staying in the moment?
Hi Jim, I often sit down and take a break. Get the back off, relax against a tree for ten minutes then have a walk around where you sat. This often works for me.
Nice photos as always. Have you considered changing your video/upload setup to 1440p or 4k? 1080p has its limits.
It boils to to cost to be honest. I need a new mac at present and am waiting for Apple's new release. My current model would not cope with higher than 1080. Even now it's struggling. There's a donation section below just for you :-)
@@SimonBoothPhotography Have just donated a little
@@Alseki7 Oh no 🙈. It was a joke, clearly a bad one! I will send it back, sorry if it was taken out of context.

Another fabulous ramble through nature. Love the calming meter of your presentations and the level of detail in both the discovery and execution of the treasures you find. Fist shot is my favorite of the bunch but the third shot has sparked my curiosity to find similar situations. Looking forward to your continuing search as I am inspired to conduct my own.
Thank you Bill. I find that when I am calm inside, I tend to see more successfully and rarely go out if i'm not in that frame of mind.
