I have been watching you from the beginning......a long time. You always come across a honest and friendly person! You are a talented and hard working person (videos, Chapman Guitars, guitar playing, etc.). I just want to pause and just say THANK YOU for being all these things. Many do not hesitate to express their dislikes and forget to express their thanks. Once again my friend I want to say THANK YOU!!
Great tones!!! Two requests Rob... Please... 1st - Nuno Bettencourt Tones (Pornograffitti and Six albuns) 2nd - Pearl Jam Tone (Ten album) Thanks very much, and keep posting!!! Regards from Portugal Cadaval
Your guitar skills make everything sound great. You've been hitting it on the head with your content recently and this is another fun and useful video. Keep them coming!
@Rob Chapman I’ve met you a couple of times over the years & have watched your videos for many moons. This is the first time I’ve really been impressed with the tones coming from a Katana! You did a damn good job! 🤘🤘
I picked up the Katana Mk2 artist head to use as a backup to my tube amp for gigs and found it so versatile that it is now the main rig. I've been relying much on the internal boosts and double EQ settings to sculpt the high gain sounds. Very cool these tones you were able to dial in straight from the knobs.
It just goes to show how incredible of a product Boss has created, that Rob with nearly infinite accessibility to amplifiers, would choose a Katana as his home base.
Love the shape of that new Chapman. Much love for you rob since the days when yall chucked guitars out of 2nd floor windows. I was there for the dorje inception and got to see you and Bea when you came to Dallas TX back in the day. Drove 3 hours to come see y’all 🖤 love you buddy! The world could use a lot more Chappers type folks
Love the shirt! You should do an instrumental called "The Pork Chop Express" and play some cool guitar on it. As my old friend Jack Burton used to say, "may the wings of liberty never lose a golden feather." Love that movie Rob. Good video!
Great work! I’m copying these settings lol. Just got the Gen 3 100w head and I’m in love with it. I own a 50 MkI and a 50 MkII and they’ve been great for home use, but this Gen 3’s new voicings and features are fabulous. The 5” reference speaker is fine for now, I’m saving up for the cab! Cheers!
Both Joe Satriani and Steve Vai used Boss DS-1 pedals heavily throughout their career. Of course it's easy to nail that tone with the Katana. I'm actually both guys aren't flat-out endorsed by Roland.
Thanks for vid - considering the Artist gen 3. I never knew you went to GIT! So a hi (and secret handshake) from a fellow (but older) alumni ( 86-87 ). Tbh not a Satch/Vai guy - firmly in the Henderson/Diorio (RIP) camp
I saw Steve give up his lead and play jamboree whilst the guitarist played through his amp at a G3 in Portsmouth a few years back. Big big respect to him. That says more than his playing will ever say. Fabulous guitarist too.
I have some really great tube amps. But the one amp I plug into most is a Katana 50. It's just so versatile and sounds great. I can get any type of tone out of that thing. From country to shred, it does it all. Really impressed with what Boss has done there. I can even match the tone from my custom shop Princeton Reverb but I had to go to the website to tweak it a bit. AND I'm not afraid to take it out of the house or gig with it...
Don't cut yourself short. I only wish I had the control of the guitar that you have. Keep up the excellent videos and maybe one day I will be able to mimic you. Thanks for what you do for the guitar world.
I've done a lot of tones on the Mk2 exclusively through Tone Studio and sometimes you make me feel like I'm using this thing all wrong, like in a good way. Great tones right from the panel. I may have to disconnect from the computer and do more hands on the panel. 🤘
I had a Boss Katana II but it broke on me. Then got a Vox Valvetronix. Was super stoked when Rob picked it as the winner of the Anderton’s blindfold challenge. 😊
This was one of the best gear reviews I've seen. One confusion on my part, though: I thought Master Volume was what sets the final loudness of the amp, i.e. what your neighbors care about; with only a relatively minor effect on the tone for something like a Katana, whereas the pre-amp Volume affects what's going into the effects, so would have more of an effect on tone and less on loudness. But you were very specific about where to put the MV and always said to set the pre-amp Volume "to taste." How are you thinking about these two controls?
Tasty Hendrix tones (I use a Fender custom shop tele thinline with NUX Trident: weird mix but it sounds quite near to The Man) but I'm confused how you got them setting the Katana to "crunch"
Those are some fantastic tones. I have the Katana and use it occasionally, I wish it were easier to obtain tones with the onboard controls. I can’t seem to get a decent tone without hooking it up to my laptop and doing a deep dive.
I have to admit, I’ve neglected the Lead channel on my 50w MKII. I usually go for Brown. Have you ever used the line out into a DAW? I’ve made countless demos using my Katana this way and the recorded tones are incredible.
You nailed a "Hendrix" sound: just wish I could use Katanas: the wiring in my house (UK) gives me so much hum, buzz and pops that I can't use them. Thank goodness for the Trident via some active monitor speakers using balanced cables: silent bliss (until I hit a chord!)
When I was buying a new amp I've tried few and these, they're decent. I've tried them but chose Line6 DT25 over it, just loved the resonance and straight up tone that I could dial.
I've learned that an amp needs to provide a certain reactive feel to the fingers. Once I have that feeling locked in the tone comes easily. The Boss K does it well.
Moddlers get some stick but you cant argue with this.. satch and vai have all the gear in the world, and here is a very affordable solid state amp that would get a gigging musician (on a budget) up and running. i have a katana and a GX100 and get so many sounds....
I'm very disappointed (I understand it's all about profit) but I will never buy a Boss Katana again. The MK2 only had one upgrade.... In a year they will release gen 4.5 and no one can follow that. I bought a boss mk2 katana head + speaker cabinet + all original Boss controllers and expression pedals. I should have bought a decent tube amp instead. I'm not saying that I'm not satisfied with the sound quality, but I'm absolutely dissatisfied with the upgrades. I definitely have to praise you Rob and I always enjoy watching your videos and appreciate your opinion. Greetings.
I was very disappointed to see what the Gen 3 50W version offered in particular. I mistakenly bought the Gen 2 50W when I knew no better and subsequently found it lacked an FX loop and I was hoping they would address this with Mk3 but no. I don’t need a 100W amp but I do need an FX loop. Yes, the 100W has lower power modes but I’d probably blow out all of the windows in my tiny house if I ever accidentally selected the 100W mode!
Same here, I won’t buy a katana again unless they DRASTICALLY improve the clean sound and make it a 2 channel amp. I hate having to switch the setting instead of having a separate channel with the different sounds like the Roland cube 60.
Are the newer Katana models any louder for recording? I love the idea of connecting an amp to laptop via USB, but because signal comes in so damn low you have to artificially increase it which causes loss of overall sound quality.
I had a Boss Katana when they fist came out- awesome amp- but sadly my £££ have now been invested in a couple of Tube amps- 1968 Fender Princeton and a Vox AC30 and many pedals
SV's Ibanez Jem is a uniquely sounding guitar. It sounds - and feels - totally different from ANY other guitar I've tried. It's not just the pickups. There is a unique magic in this instrument no other axe can replicate. So try next time an Ibanez Jam and see how that sounds. I bet it will make a HUGE difference. GREAT video! LOVE the JS sounds! The Jimi cleans were also very tasteful. Good stuff. Katanas rock!
Hmm that's a weird take. I've never played a gem, and never been interested mostly because every Ibanez six string I've ever played, strung, wired or repaired sounded thin and dead unplugged. I would rather use them as firewood than to play music.
At the Andertons blindfolded video, Katana sounded very bad and Rob chose the Vox over all modeler amps… Not sure if I buy that Katana is all that good now…
@RobChappers thanks for the honest advice. No other amp I've had has been such a joy to play. But sometimes, you see all the hype on RUclips and think, could I get just as much joy but for less money. But, I'll stick with the badcat now. P.S. My favourite guitar to play with it is my chapman workshop series guitar. You did a great job with those guitars. Absolutely stunning!!
It’s not the best amp out there but it’s one of the best solid state amps you’ll find. Put it on full volume, it doesn’t sound bad. To me it has a really good clean channel and decent overdrive channels, which have probably gotten better on the newer models. It really sounds excellent using the recording line out into an interface though, something about it sits extremely well in a recorded mix.
Bought the 50 watt returned it the next day.out of the box it sounded terrible and I’m not digging through a”tone studio” when I can buy an amp that doesn’t need it.most overrated price of gear I’ve ever seen.and obviously nothing sounds in the room like it does on you tube, but that amp sucked, and the noise was terrible.should have looked into it closer like I did after the fact and saved a couple trips
Challenge? I challenge you to make a video of how fast you can chuck it in a dumpster. Boss has made and continues to make MANY great pieces of gear. This is not one of them. No, it's not the worst amp ever made. But it's in the same ballpark! And it is WORTHLESS to a traveling musician.

@@NintenDub you nailed it! I can truly say Rob is an amazing human and an even better friend.
Same here. Memories of Rob in the kitchen!
Katana can get any tones you would want. Tube snobs hate Katana. 😉
It's very affordable, and it works.
Good analogy, Katana is the new Peavey Bandit. I've owned one for several years now, and still love it's versatility.
id rather have the Peavey bandit over these boss amps any day of the week. They were goods amps.

Buy an Ego battery and their 400 watt inverter. Never use you home electricity again.

It was the PEAVEY express 112 as well as the Bandit.
