Based on a true story, Message to Shigatse puts a spotlight on the disappearance of the Panchen Lama in 1996, Tibet's second most revered spiritual leader, at the young age of six. More than fifteen years later, there is evidence that he is still alive and being held captive by the Chinese Communist Party. Often referred to as the world's youngest political prisoner, the Panchen Lama plays a key role in choosing the next Dalai Lama. His ongoing captivity has threatened the future of the Dalai Lamas and also the deeply spiritual tradition of Tibetan Buddhism.
