CES 2017: Clearaudio's Impressive Turntable Line Up Explained

- Clearaudio manufactures a wide range of turntables. Many models and variations. Here Michael Fajen, Musical Surroundings Customer Service Manager, lays it all out and clarifies the offerings, probably better than they've ever been described at a trade show-at least of the dozens I've attended.

I had a Clearaudio turntable and had a problem with the tonearm. The UK distributor said I had to contact the manufacturer in Germany, the manufacturer said the UK distributor must deal with it. After a lot of emails and phone calls I gave up. A little internet research showed that others have found Clearaudio aftersales service to be similarly lacking. I still have a Clearaudio tonearm that doesn't work, but I also have a Roksan turntable and a Rega tonearm. Both companies have stood 100pc behind their products and I couldn't be happier.
The moral of this story is don't touch Clearaudio with a shitty stick because once they've got your money they don't want to know. Merry Christmas one and all.
I love my Clearaudio Virtuoso V2 Ebony cartridge on my Thorens TD-309 TT. Good job Clearaudio!! Nice line up of TTs!!
Great comprehensive overview! I'm in the market for a second TT for my digitizing setup and you've really helped (as usual)!
Thanks
Coherent, balance, extended, all price / purpose setting catalogue. Well done again, Clearaudio.
14:22 "Gigue" by Robert de Vise playing in the background..I remember playing that for a guitar exam about 25 years ago.
Great video, thank you Michael! :)
18:01 "Bullet proof ply wood" for that audiophile system you gonna setup in da hood.
I bought a house instead.lol !
Love the music .
I live in the hood, but fortunately I have a stone colonial, so if the walls take fire, they're pretty durable. The windows... not so much. LOL 🤣
I have considered multiply laminate windows, like they have in prisons. That would keep my turntable safe.
Just about the best looking turntables in the industry. The quality in manufacturing is just flawless.
should check out accoustic solid turntables
i have an acoustic solid wood mpx.....but on other side of the globe, need to get a performance DC, but innovation looks so damn sexxy
Baltic Birch huh.... the same wood that is used for Velodrome cycling tracks. I'm sure everyone was dying to know that.
There is is huge difference. I auditioned the $25,000 Master Innovation to the $6,500 Ovation and the difference was staggering. The $6,500 sounded broken compared to the Master Innovation. Both tables used the same cartridge as well. Very interesting comparison.
I take it this was a double blind-fold test?
Mike P at $6500 I assume it is not supposed to sound broken unless something is wrong.
Great Stuff Michael , man the choices .............
Great TTs. Have one with Virtuoso V2. signal goes to McIntosh system & B&W speakers. Love it!!!
Love my Performance SE. The ovation looks drool-worthy
If only the vinyl of today deserved such quality.
A tip : watch movies at Flixzone. I've been using them for watching a lot of movies these days.
@Giovanni Anthony Yea, been using Flixzone} for years myself :D
Question: Other than basics such as speed accuracy and regularity, freedom from rumble and isolation from external forces, does a turntable, in itself, actually have an effect on the the sound of a record? If so, for what reason? I am speaking of the turntable only, exclusive of a given tonearm.
Well any turntable without a dust cover will shorten the life of your records by increasing the amount of dust ground into the grooves - so after 10 years, yes, these behemoths will trash your records unless you use them in a cleanroom (perhaps that's what billionaires do though)
these turntables are good when you're rich, don't use drugs, don't drink, you got 10 vinyls (specials, rare and magnifique edition, but 10 in total) that you enjoy on your eames chair. but imagine putting a record on with one of these TT when you're drunk stoned and you want to air guitar and after that song you want to change record and your friend is headbanging and the dog is strollin with you and you want to blast the Sonics after the Clash and Nirvana and the drink in your hand is goin' everyplace...
$750 for a in-play VTA lifter... this is a tapered rotating ring...costs less than $50 to make...clearly shows much high end equipment is vastly overpriced.
the statment is resonance attached by bearing so its not floating! but still resonance attached by bearing to base.
Just ordered the Concept w/Satisfy & Concept MC to replace my Rega P3-24.
What is the difference between mm and mc?
Hi where can I buy one like this?
When you consider that the level of engineering in those high end turntables far outstrips that which is used on a cutting lathe in a mastering suite.
I hope you do not doubt that they can keep a 33 rpm when cutting a disk just fine and that they put in whatever effort it ACTUALLY takes to achieve that... ;)
@@Baerchenization The speed isn't the problem. Some records aren't even centered correctly which is a disgrace. Whether this is at cutting stage or at the pressing plant, it should never happen. Some mastering suites have really old gear that needs better engineering to get the most out of the cut.
We can actually improve the silence once again: Customized coloured and selected-texture highglossy polished heavy marmor plate underneath of the whole setup.
just a beautiful turntable. I planning to get one of them by end of this month
I remember listening to the Infinity IRS speaker system and at the time they were $160,000 and I thought they were great and that people who want them and can afford them should have them. I love high-end audio but my Acoustats that cost me around $2000 sound better to me. The IRS speakers have image wander while my Acoustats have a rock solid image.
Being happy with what you have is a great blessing in life.
How much it cost for that model of turntable and what is the percentage of wow and flatter.. Raffy Garcia, Pozorrubio, Pangasinan, Philippines
Why have a belt at all if you have a motor and magnetic dive (on the flagship) ?
I watch this video whenever I want to feel poor lol😅
Reading the comments below, I think we are focusing on the wrong things. This stuff is out of my price range but I enjoy vinyl and like to see / view the latest greatest etc. I view TOTL watches, cars etc. I like my setups but can look and appreciate.
i'd love to hear the difference between that $50,000 setup and a $500 setup. gotta wonder if you'd hear $49,500 worth of difference...
Analog Planet i have not, but i'd love to, if you wouldn't mind posting a link.
I know what you mean. The highest end setup I've ever heard was probably only a few thousand (nice 70s Marantz amplifier and a Technics 1200 at a record store) and I already couldn't imagine how that record could have sounded any better than it did there. But that's probably a failure of imagination and the elusive nature of sound at work as well, plus my hearing isn't very good, I suspect.
Went to the analog audio festival in Krefeld Germany last year.
Owning a decent system (Clearaudio Concept MC wood, Lehmannaudio Decade, Synthesis Nimis (Tube class A) and DIY Wilson Watt Puppies I can say there is a difference between that and the L'Art Du Son system I heard there, amazing!!!
OTOH if you got a decent system, you can still go home put on a record and enjoy :)
So my advice is to go to an high end audio show and go listen to a $50.000 or $200.000 system.
I'd like a link as well. Search the AP profile page but didn't see anything.
Mike Hydropneumatic
Can you really do that? (compare different turntables in completely different room and with different electronics)
My experience is completely different.
I where at a HiFi show and got a demonstration of a bit electronic component on a system there. with and without the electronic in the signal chain (same room and system). And what a astonishing difference!
Then I went to another room there they where promoting 200.000 sek speakers from TAD. And I noticed that TAD had this special electronic in the signal chain that made such a huge performance difference that I just had got a demonstration off! Of course TAD what to have the best preconditions for their demonstration of their speakers.
But what where I listening to? was it the speakers or was it the super duper electronics?
One thing is shure that the speakers will NOT sound like that in my home because for starters, I do not have the same super duper electronics..
The same goes for the turntables as for the speakers.
But you have a good point that you need to go HiFi shows you learn allot there. :)
Very cool!
When they make one as pretty as the Mitsubishi LT-5V I might consider it. With brushed champagne gold amps and panels of course.
The Innovation is kind of my grail TT. From the Performance DC on, I'm sure I'd be happy with any of them as far as performance is concerned, but the Innovation is a statement piece. The only thing I don't get is the $1600 up-charge for the "wood" version instead of the MDF on the Performance DC. I'm sure it's a nice Birch plywood, but $1600 for a less than 2 sq ft piece of it? What does it have to be machined with diamonds? That same piece of wood is $800 in the concept wood. Doesn't really make sense to me. Panzer wood I'd understand. Oh the feet are different, yea but not in cost of materials. I wonder how they sell?
i have the same thought as you. after looking at this innovation i am torn apart btw this and performance DC wood. the extra cost is also due to the rigidity which i saw in some video.
I believe the dollar is stronger against the euro today than it was in 2011. yet the innovation wood, with the same arm, is $6,000 more expensive today. with no discernible upgrades. ...
FlyBy Night scams dont make sense
I prefer direct drive instead of a rubber band drive and automatic
Make a turntable that does what LSD does to sound. Then you'll have something.
Make a turntable that can automatically center records with off center holes
(like most records) too and you'll really have something! Don't let Crosley beat you!!!
Nothing but eye candy
Amazingly gorgeous set of gear here. Looks like I need to sell a kidney now.
is this for real and there are no bathrooms here
they use on osmotic sucking device for there needs
Sorry I'll stick with my £40000 Dohmann Helix 1 with the fabulous Minus K suspension
a
At 6:13 I don't see a tonearm...
The Tonearm Is the Bar at the back. It Is a longer version to the Previous one shown. They are the Best way to play back records. As They are the same configuration as the Cutting Lathe that Cut the Record In the First place. They are called Linear Tracking Tonearms.
I will stick with my Technics 1200......
Clearaudio's Most beautiful tables in the world, better than VPI and Technics.
Try looking at a Walker Audio, you'll feel differently.
Michael is it true you are Andy Payor's Brother-in-law? Andy Payor is the Brilliant Rockport Technologies CEO & owner
Why?
I am going to ask my Boss for a raise he will give me a kick the ass instead.
Turntable for the peasant class
Dust Cover ???
Its laughable, an expensive bulky machine to clean a disc, then no dust cover or anti static brush on the flipping turntable. Any one with a record collection knows that dust is enemy number one.
i agree shorter arms ARE better, less mass
why would you need two tonearms?
To fit two cartridges you own and not having to adjust every time. Some like to listen to mono records and thus own a dedicated mono cartridge for example.
Analog Planet (if you reply to this that would be awesome because you've given me all my vinyl record knowledge) But why actually do you need two?
perhaps sometimes ppl like vanilla and choco ice cream - both flavors for the palette
So you can willy-wave both of them?
This video is obviously made with a handheld camera. All that movement made me seasick!
I say unless you've got a very good treated room then spend your money on records, room treatments or better speakers. Who's buying $50k turntables anyway billionaires?
Analog Planet i bought a turntable in 1983 that cost $430 in todays dollars i reckon about $800 or so? I was just a young kid in those days. I have long since come to my senses as i still have that turntable and still use it. Hate to think how much i would have to spend today on new turntable just to get the same level of quality and performance.
Il stick with my nakamichi TX-1000 seeing as none of them can do what the nak can
looks like lathe
Well if only records were made of vibranium all this would have made sense , the good old record is still vinyl and it gets warped and damaged , beyond a point throwing money and tech at tracking a needle over a vinyl record cannot get any better.
IMAGINE trying to buy these turntables with Guyanese $$$😅😅😅lol very hard😅
Why so many models? Is very confusing for the customers....
They are trying to get phools to buy one then the next, then the next, in the hope of taking more money from people with more money than sense ("all the gear, no idea") - clearly its working.
Price point I think. They started with the innovation, and later back filled with the innovation basic and innovation compact. Like why have a BMW 320,325,330...
За ети деньги пригласить симфонический оркестр домой
no matter how high end these turn tables get, belt drive sux!!! LOL :D
Show us the numbers behind that assertion please... Personally an exposed belt drive is just silliness, but belt drive can work absolutely fine, as can direct or inertial mass
numbers? lol ok, my father was a professional musician, in the 60's. I'm 56 year's old, I've owned countless number's of turntables since I was a kid. You ought to see my record collection. My rromate used to be a DJ for a nightclub, has a big record collection. Gawd, the belt's I've had to replace, for a crappy turn table, that looses energy along the belt, that never keeps perfect speed any way. That's my basic gripe, is the loss of energy. And the longer the belt, the more energy loss.
Nice but pricey for no reason.
What a waste of money! CDs are SOOOO much better; glad to have gotten rid of vinyl YEARS ago!
17:00 under that huge slab platter is a shitty Crosleys style belt motor!. A scam not to engineer a proper direct Drive motor, and include an bla magnetic bla bla transmission. Well, someone have to take money off from those stupid rich retired dudes, hahaha
I've seen a few expensive belt-driven turntables running a bit off speed and no way to correct it or a built-in strobe to indicate it.
My Technics 1700 will demolish those.
debut carbon ...500 canadian lol
My minidiscs sound better & better all the time. Thanx!!!
Just imagine a dj doing mixes on 2 of these $50.000 turntables which looks like ,weird to put it nicely😂And the console on which it sits.Funny they don't specify if its for professional or private use.Again its just wasting money buying thes items at these prices .The amplifier .equalizer also the speakers have alot to do with the way the vinyl(RECORDS) sound .Sorry the cost of there TT are to exorbitant ,they are like the FERRARI,LAMBORGHINI.PORSHE.of turntables 😂😂😂😂lol😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂
if you buy this, you have WAY too much money and you're a flog!
I use these turntables for making chapaties.
30k for a tone arm????. Wow what a rip off....maybe 30-80$ bucks for materials and maybe a few hundred for Labour and R&D. you can buy a nice car for that ( which has much more technology and R&D invested)
Analog Planet so....you're telling me that that tonearm has the same amount of material and time invested as an Audi A3???.
I suppose a 5k audio cable is needed to let this component "breathe" ( or some other audiophile bs)
Analog Planet
hey dude you opened a public forum for discussion...
you may not always like what you hear.
I actually enjoy 2 channel audio.
economies of scale.....good one
2.5-3k for that tonearm would still give a healthy profit.....
Analog Planet you're insane to spend that on a tonearm.
Analog Planet Personal opinion.
You are right, people can spend what they like.
You have to be insane to think there is an appreciable difference between that tonearm and 1 that costs 3k.
It's playing vinyl for God's sake. how much information do you think is in the grooves of a record??
The salesmen/reviews in Stereophile etc. are rooking people to make ludicrous profit.
Analog Planet Will do.
How do u fall for these scams
Spending that much on a turntable is completely pointless, all that a turntable does is spin the record and hold the cartridge, nothing else, you can unplug the turntable and spin it yourself and it will still play. And you can make it as precise as you can in the end it comes down to the quality of the record, the master record is probably cut with cheaper equipment and the pressing itself isn't nearly as precise either.
Actually if you spin it yourself the wow and flutter is unacceptable to everyone except audiophiles who'll describe it as superb rhymthic presentation!
LMAO You guys are quite the jokers with your OVERPRICED turntables. THIS IS PURE SNAKE OIL AT IT's BEST.
$9000!? Sorry, I'll stick with my Technics SL1600MK2, JBL L50's, Cary Audio SLI 80 and tube phono pre amp and save myself thousands to buy vinyl~! Most so called "audiophiles" are just audio snobs who for some strange reason invest a ridiculous amount of money on audio equipment to somehow "think or believe" that they can actually hear the difference in sound reproduction. Just like the so called audiophile speaker cables, interconnects, power cords etc. All snake oil bs~ But a tremendous amount of marketing goes into all of this audio hype and sadly many fall into it...
Your Technics has a more sophisticated speed control system, I bet it can outperform these Clearaudios in speed stability... and you also have a magnetic drive system.
Neither of you have heard or spent any amount of time with these tables you're bashing. What you're saying is the definition of "bs".
chgofirefighter - You're hilarious; typical ignorant response from someone who has no experience or any understanding of high end audio.
"High end audio" is definition of "high end" means more money then by all means enjoy~ With 9k you can buy a complete audio system without breaking the bank and enjoy "high end" audio.
Flappo Spammo you're the best dude...teach me.
What is the difference between mm and mc?
