- Опубликовано: 15 окт 2024
- On today's explore we found an abandoned Chicago METRA Train with 16 train cars, in the Chicago area. The Engine was a MARC Train and one of the train cars were burnt. I'm not sure why these are abandoned but they've been here for quite some time.

MARC - Maryland Rail Commuter line. The green loco was run by an ENGINEER not the conductor. The loco was sold by the BNSF to Metra then Metra sold the loco to MARC. Have never seen junks bi-level gallery cars…
Thank you for the info! I knew someone would help me out haha
BNSF never owned it but BN Did and then sold it to metra and metra just left this here
@@Railfan124 So strange. Reminds me of Southern and PennCentral passenger cars left to rust in Charlotte, NC 20+ years. Some were bought for a restaurant/office complex which never took off. They bought maybe 5x as many cars as needed. A lot in poor shape.
Do you have any idea why there would be all that French waiting in the gallery cars, it seems like they are primarily French, maybe they were used in Quebec? It also said Sortie, which means exit in French
There is actually some more metra cars in the California desert
Couple of points: The E-9 is the last of the classic series of GM Electro-Motive division passenger diesel locomotives. They were in production from the 1930's until the early 1960's. I am sure that a museum would still like this shell and then put in a more modern prime mover and generator in addition to the other requirements needed to operate locomotives. Also, how cool would it be to convert one of the old commuter cars into a home. I lot of the plumbing work is already done. Seems it would be easier to convert one of these than a shipping container.
@@jeffholloway7974 it was initially at IRM, but all the internal went to a booster (cabless) locomotive. I’m not sure how it ended up here.
I honestly want to visit this because it's a piece of Chicago history! These are so beautiful
I remember riding in that train in the 1970s..from the western suburbs to Chicago Union station
I checked this out on Memorial day of 2023 and this train is in a lot worse shape than it was when you guys saw it. Sure is sad no museum wants to preserve it as a display model or even use it as a part out
There is so much abandoned house and buildings in the Chicago suburbs it’s crazy!
Way to much!
Pretty sure this is the chicago train that was abandoned in california??
New Detroit.
Thanks for showing this aspect of Midwest
These were gallery cars manufactured by Pullman in the 1950s and 1960s. Chicago sold them to various transit agencies such as MARC and VRE (Virginia Railway Express). VRE bought brand new railcars and sold them back to Chicago Metra
1:05 that "cool little window" is where the headlight would have gone, I am guessing someone took it off as they can be used for other locomotives or someone stole it
Probably sold it since it’s probably rare light
The place you recorded this video, thier will be soon a bunch of abandoned houses because their building a factory so all the houses are getting bought and people are moving out lmk if you want cords
LMK LMK
Well that’s smarter then me climbing on to an autorack (car carrier) that was parked on a side rail 😂
I would always get yelled at for using the outlet by those priority seats on metra
These cars and this locomotive were purchased by Iowa Pacific Holdings. Most likely they were intended to be used in excursion services. Or possibly used as parts sources for the rest of IAPH's fleet.
Iowa Pacific Holdings went bankrupt and left this equipment in situ. In fact, IAPH left a lot of equipment stashed away in several places.
incl in LA? cuz i found some abandond train cars near a warehouse in LA on google maps
How do you know that?
Nvm you’re wrong
I don't think it was this specific trainset featured in the video, but Iowa Pacific did have an old METRA trainset which they used for University of Iowa football train excursions from a nearby mall to near Kinnick Stadium in Iowa City. I believe the Pandemic and other factors resulted in the service ending.
The Hawkeye train was Iowa Interstate, not Iowa Pacific.
When I use to ride the Chicago trains when I was a kid they were still Chicago & Northwestern now it is Metra I always liked to sit on the upper tier someone said that was not a good idea in case there was a train derailment you would be sure to get killed you guys must be in the industrial area of Bensenville / Elkgrove / or DesPlaines Illinois near Ohare international Airport
They are called railcars. Most are coaches and the on you had to climb over chairs is a cab car. The cab car has controls like the locomotive so you can operate the train from there
MARC is Maryland Area Rail Commuter is a commuter rail system in Maryland
The e-9 locomotive was used for the Marc passenger railway this locomotive was invoked in a deadly accident, a women ran across the tracks after a train passed and she didn’t make sure another train was coming and she was hit and killed by this train going 60+ mph
I will never forget the impact, she was flung right past the cameraman.
I skate these, dope video g. If you ever come out again, the weekends are when the workers are gone
A lot of fond memories in my childhood riding those metra trains.
0:17 I don’t think you know what the disturbing past of this train really is…
Is this _the_ locomotive from that video?
@@JoeyLovesTrains yes sadly.
@@JoeyLovesTrains no the locomotive you're thinking of is 9912
@@SCRM_Railfanwell there is no number so idk
hey ive been here a few times, it was pretty neat
MARC is Maryland Area Regional Commuter. idk how a train from DC/Maryland ended up in Chicago but its interesting.
What age when I'm ready to restore this train (1991 Metra Train)
Dude you’ve never been on a metra train before???
Nope never. I don’t think I’ve ever been on a working train before
Wtf are you not from the Chicago area?
@@decayingmidwest lol
I believe today it's METRA and South shore line 😊
Also that is not a table at 2:38 it the seat back in the day some train cars had the feature for when train was switching directions at the end of the line. The seats will also be flipped to match the direction of travel, which was also used on the Shinkansen zero series. But it fell out of favor also Sortie is the French and Spanish word for exit
They deserved to be saved and preserved in the future!
My childhood dream. Well into my sixties now!
It’s a Burlington northern e9
It’s sad about the accident that locomotive was involved in. A woman was walking across a crosswalk on the tracks at a station and she got hit by that locomotive. Killed her instantly and flung her body towards the camera man. Just look up “train hits girl” or sumthin like that .
I really find it interesting that not only the coaches are there but the matching locomotive as well
OMG would love to find this and photograph it
MARC METRO AREA RAPID COMUTE I BELIEVE Chicago area I believe before Metra i think I read a train magazine about it
I just saw this now you got to be by O’hare , and yeah this old trains are so cool except in the winter when snow would fall threw
The locomotive is emd e9 BN
at 5:17 what is the name of the mall pictured and how it got there?
Gotta be careful in chicagoland abandon areas. Might run into a homeless person who might want problems.
Been good so far
Nah bro 😂 the most they will want from you is some change or drugs
Omg the E-9 is a peice of once rolling history
old metra coach abonndoned REPEAT OLD METRA TO NEWS METRA
Very cool, unfortunately the back story of why it rest here is quite sad,one day a train had just stopped at the station and back in the day while the train sat unloading or loading passengers people would cross the track, well one day this woman and her lawyer were at the crossing while another train was idle unloading passengers well this woman, marry and her lawyer were discussing the divorce that was in the process at the time and unfortunately she was to distracted talking and failed to relise another train, that green one ex burlington northern was approaching fast and she didn't have time to react the lawyer saw the train and stepped back but marry got hit and died instantly, then the railroad was hit with multiple lawsuits and couldn't sell the set,now they lay for the rest of time
MARC ran I'm no expert 1960-1980 I believe
How does it smell in there tho?
Not bad while frozen
What section of chicago was this in?
Anyone know why French seems to be the primary language in these cars?
The cars were probably made in Canada by Bombardier. Bombardier sold its train car division to a French company Alstom in 2020.
Parts of America has turned into an ugly mess for which there seems to be no concern to clean it up.
Plate C
The engine is a Burlington Northern E.8 or E.9
and it hasn't ran since the 1980's....
Sorti is exit
i think one of the cars originated in Quebec due to all the french signs (sortie, the emergency instructions)
Dudes little friend is hot
Is this the e9 that killed a lady on video?
I believe the reason this train was abandoned was due to it being involved in a collision with a pedestrian at the Downers Grove station back in the 80’s
Jeez
The passenger cars shown in this video never operated on BN or BNSF. They are either ex Chicago and North Western or ex Rock Island.
Without the road numbers it's hard to say but definitely one of that locomotives fleetmates. Then Es were retired in the early 90s because they were the bulk of the Burlington passenger fleet from the 50s to early 60s and with a major rebuild program by the newly formed Burlington Northern Thad a little over 50 years of service under their belts.
These are cars built by Pullman in the 1950s. Most of them have been retired by Metra now, but some were converted to bike cars.
The one that hit the pedestrian was 9912 which is at a museum
luckly gustavtime restore this (fictional)
Do hobos live in there
nope
Surprisingly nah. Went there recently didn’t see anyone.
MORE TAX DOLLARS WASTED...
Wasted? How? This equipment was purchased new by private enterprise - the locomotive was built for & purchased by the Chicago, Burlington & Quincy Railroad & the coach cars were built for & purchased by the Chicago & North Western Railroad. When the Regional Transportation Authority was created, this equipment was purchased by & used in their fleet for many years. In fact, many years beyond their original service life expectancies. Not a penny of money was wasted here…the taxpayers got their money’s worth. Everything mechanical has a lifespan of service which these have exceeded. That’s why they’ve turned to junk. Also, Metra sold these to Iowa Holdings & made a little money in doing so.
@@chooch1995 ALL TAX MONEY IS WASTED MONEY..PERIOD..
