This historic win will inject much needed talent and reinvigorate Latvian hockey. Kaspars Daugavins was actually retired, and as he sat watching one particular tournament game on TV he thought to himself about returning for a final push. Returned, trained, and in 2023 made history with others. Wonderful! So proud for all! 🇱🇻🇱🇻🇱🇻
And today is a national holiday in Latvia. As an American living in Finland, I am so happy Latvia got the bronze. Latvians also happy about how they were treated in Tampere!
Cannot commend the city of Riga or the people of Latvia highly enough. Watched 3 preliminary games out there and it was great place to go, amazing atmosphere, good food / beer and fantastic weather. Enjoy this!!!! Lat - vi - ja!!!
Hello from Latvia. To us third place is like winning first place. Don't know who will work tomorrow, because everyone is celebrating today and tomorrow we will greet our team in Latvia.
@@Charles45633 but it has plenty of capable hockey players to select no? I mean is that really dependent of the size of the population? The capability of the players seem to matter a lot more than the population. Look at finlands team, dominating hockey for so long. It has a lot smaller population than russian or the usa. If thats the main thing then how can finland play against russia, the usa and so on so well?
It's literally a national holiday in Latvia you cant imagine how long we fought for this. So much blood, sweat and tears. Our men are legendary and true heroes for achieving this even though circumstances we're against them.
@@neceto1145 Love it! It is truly amazing to see the love and passion Latvia has for hockey! In the end, Latvia was the true champion of this tournament.
3:40 Latvia has had some other really amazing goaltenders. Matīss Kivlenieks got Latvia's first ever win and a shutout against Canada just 2 years ago (and, unfortunately, he passed away the same year), Artūrs Irbe, an absolute hockey legend of late 1990s and early 2000s who was also the goalie coach for Latvia this year, Edgars Masaļskis and Elvis Merzļikins as well, whose performance recently has been pretty bad but he has to deal with being the primary goalie for the blue jackets.
So awesome to see all the support for our team from hockey fans around the world, sometimes even over their own team lol. Felt like the entire world is cheering them on with us. Brings a tear to my eye.
And as you say, it wasn't a case of the US having a terrible game, or a goalie standing on his proverbial head. This was a full team effort. One of the most rewarding things in sports is to see an underdog pull together and all play at their absolute best when it matters most. Congrats, Latvia!!!
Talking about goalie/goaltender, you have to remember Arturs Irbe (Artūrs Irbe), nicknamed The Wall, he was playing in NHL as well and later became coach, then he coached back for our club for one season back in 2015-2016, and now he was the goalie coach for this championship. Arturs Shilovs (Artūrs Šilovs) is walking in his footsteps, he might be the legacy, the next Wall. His future is bright, so expect him to be seen at NHL games in later part of his career.
For Latvia it is the biggest achievment in hockey. Latvija Uzvara!!!! And you got it right it is great win for old Latvian hockey players like Arturs Irbe, Sandis Ozoliņš etc
Now the Latvian government is working on declaring tomorrow a national holiday, when the team returns to Latvia, so the whole country can celebrate!!❤❤
by the way Rubins didn't join the team late cause he ''didnt make the starting lineup'', but he had some problems with his club. He is always a top 4 defensman for us, so we were waiting for him to arrive. (no hate)
I'm not from Latvia but i'm so happy for them and this is very good for ice hockey seeing new countries rise! Ps. Seeing you guys so happy for Latvia made me smile a lot.
Must admit this a very profesional and highly positive video about our team, i liked. Realy loved to watch. This year tournament is coming closer, hope Latvia can show a consistent moving forward and bring a lot of good exciting games. Not a secret, there will be a lot of attention this year, as some countries like for example Sweden is maybe not aiming for medal first, they go for a rematch with Latvia. 😂
And the greatest captain Kaspars Daugavins/Daugaviņš... mighty be interesting - his surname is derive from "Daugava", the largest river in Latvia and by diminutive "-iņš" could be translated as "small Daugava".
Latvia beat a hockey world power. Congrats Latvia. From Ilinois in the USA. Also congrats to USA.

An interesting fact is that the whole team with coaches are professional hockey experience, and they are completely Latvians by their attitude. In the year 1996, when they played first time in the highest level championship, there were about 50/50 ethnic Russians, from the Soviet past, some of them being even really pro-kremlin, like colonizers mentality Russian...like Znaroks. Now these are totally mentally motivated patriots of Latvia... without those "I've born here" therefore I am legit. You are Latvian when You feel like it, not mentally in Russia, but living in here for your career.
it wouldnt matter for us latvians if we won bronze/silver/gold medal we would be just as happy all that matters that we got any medal at all for the first time ever in history
Congratulations to Latvia from Finland! 🎉
Thankyou, and so nice to co-host!!!👏
Kiitos
Incredible feeling!!! The whole country is soooo extremely proud! Our boys did amazing job and gave us such a shot of positivity!!!🇱🇻🇱🇻🇱🇻🇱🇻
🇱🇻🇰🇿✊✌️
Not me thoug, it's a fucking 3rd place... That's how you rise looser by celebrating 3rd place and making a next day a holiday, wtf?
Saules mūžu Latvijai!

The only sad thing is that his father passed away just last year. Hopefully he is able to still see this achievement from above.
Yes its tough to play hockey in your 30s. Once you reach that you are on your way out. Its a short lived career as a player
I think it was his wife who made him come back for the home tournament. Thanks to her!

Not from halfway but from last group game. Rubins joined the team immediately after the season ended in AHL.
I'm so happy for my country! Latvia never gives up!❤🇱🇻❤

Didn't realize that! We got to watch Rubins fairly close, he played in the ECHL for our local team!
@@rinksidedigest yeah i think he had AHL play-offs and maybe some issues a bit later, not sure... I hope he gets another shot at NHL tho
