The phrase “Banzai!” actually is a shorter of “Tennōheika Banzai!” which means “long live his majesty, the Emperor”. The gun they most commonly used was also an Arisaka Type 99.
Banzai is a conjunction of 万(Ten thousand) and 歳(age/years), it comes from China and it is pronounced "Wan Sui" in Chinese, later becoming "Ban zai/ばんざい" in Japanese.

I'd love to hear more. I'm American but I can't help but feel like not enough is known about the Japanese side of things. These days stories from journals and those who lived are more widely available but such information also has a rarity to it. Not just the bad stories of loss and battle but such stories such as getting drunk on duty and narrowly getting caught or even getting caught, the music they played, the songs they Sung, the jokes that were told... People forget the war is over, I feel deeply sorry for the ones who survived on the Japanese side and either resorted to Seppuku or endured harsh treatment. One thing I've realized is, the Emperors Troops all honored Bushido as no enemy boots set foot on Japanese soil (Homeland) It was the government that chose to surrender as it was the best option for the people, the military did it's duty to the fullest. (Not saying the government didn't but it was still those who lived in the Emperors Military who were blamed) May the souls of the fallen rest in peace and may the grip of shame & dishonor be cut away from them! Damn dude. Such a, simple? forumla, but it isn't simple: it's elegant, and odd, and entertaining, and devastating, and utterly confusing. Bravo man. Bravo.
Listen to this with headphones and you can just feel the atmosphere around you even though you weren’t there. Just close your eyes and imagine actually leading the charge, brings tears.
Saipan is genuinely one of the most interesting battles ever - but is often overshadowed by the D-Day landings which happened 9 days prior. largest tank engagement in the pacific, largest banzai charge in the pacific, the orchestrator of Pear Harbor and Midway ends his life there, the largest naval battle in human history occurred off its shores and the airfield put American bombers in range of Tokyo.
I always tear up when I see or listen to videos like these. White army charges, banzai charges, red army charges, it's like a meat grinder, that chops and minces thousands of brave men at once, burning lives like they were nothing but matchsticks thrown on a pile. The music makes it even worse. I don't know why, but it's always the music, that really drives me over the edge, and wrings out the tears. Let's respect eachother more, and even if we don't manage to eradicate war, which will likely never happen, let us at least make it a gentlemanly affair, as it was in the past.
My great great grandpa took part in the pacific,He didnt fight but built traintrack's for supply engines and almost got sent to saipan sense he was a engineer but talked his way out of it
My grandfather of the same name fought as a Marine on Saipan in WWII. I visited Saipan in December of 2019. I climbed suicide cliff on the island which is where a large portion of the islanders committed suicide. I regret that decision...
When I have a Japanese friend there is a good chance that when we visit a hotel, he is going to jump towards an inflatable buoy yelling "Tenno heika banzai" doing some sort of a human Kamikaze dive.
I am currently living here in Saipan (born and raised), it is good to know about my history and what happened, nobody really knows about our island but seeing youtube videos about it is really interesting
Fun Fact: This song is still one of the most widely used military songs in Japan, and is frequently performed by the military bands of the Japan Self-Defense Forces and Japan Metropolitan Police Department for their official military parade. In Japan, many of the military songs of the former Imperial Japanese Army are still inherited by the Self-Defense Forces. The Imperial Guard still exists in Japan as an emperor's escort unit.
I can’t help but feel bad for some Japanese soldiers. They fought for what they believed in, and never gave up. Sort of like the samurai at shiroyama in a way
I will show the respect to them for the idea of quite literally giving all you have on the battlefield, that's some intense dedication But I don't respect for their actions of _how_ they had to arrive at such dedication The cruelty of the Japanese during this period is often buried or dismissed outright in favor of the scorn being mostly focused on the Germans I am happy they are allies now yes, but no I don't want to give them more respect than that when it comes to this period of Japanese history
It was the one time in history where you'd literally get scared from tons of meat with pointy sticks charging at you even though you've got ample supply of ammunition for a turkey shoot. Gotta admit, the Japanese where really dedicated to the cause even when they knew it was a 100% fatality rate with a 10% to 20% chance of a victory...
Generally speaking it worked well against the Chinese, who didn't have automatic weapons or real training and would flee when forced into melee. Against the US it was generally done to ensure soldiers were killed rather than captured.
The charges managed to overrun many positions and were extremely deadly but it was a double edged sword. Not to mention, it wasn't just American firepower that managed to stop the attacks, it was the extensive and intense hand to hand combat training as well. Worst place a Marine back then could be was first line of defense during a suicide charge. However, it wasn't like the Americans were totally vulnerable. Many fought back, many managed to block, deflect, or stop a bayonet by dodging, gaining control of the front of the rifle, disarming, and going for the throat. They don't call em Devil Dogs for nothen! "It wasn't a matter of knowing you were killing people, they were there to kill you, in the heat of the moment, you don't think about if it's right or wrong, the brain goes into fight or flight mode and for Marines or anyone in the military, it goes to fight. Your brain is only concerned about survival. Your body becomes a weapon, your hyperfocused, your adrenaline surges, your muscles tighten, your heart pounds, and your reflexes are heightened. It's war, them or you, keeping yourself and buddies alive by any means necessary. It's not glamorous, some argue honor is reserved for the dead, and coming home alive is a blessing in itself. You want to come close to understanding what war is like? First get religious because it's the closest thing to hell the living have and God's the only one that can get you out of it" - fron the journal of a US Marine veteran of the Pacific theater WW2.

This went from awesome and intense-to absolutely terrifying. Jesus Christ, well played, sir. Well played.
Press F for those lives wasted in Banzai Charges. Perfect example of lions led by asses to the abyss. The only lion among Japanese leaders - Tadamichi Kuribayashi - forbade banzai charges.
99% of banzai charges were conducted when there was no other option. It's not like they wasted manpower.
@@yaboiarchy9718 Nah man, on Iwo Jima, Kuribayashi discovered that conserving his own men and efficiently killing US soldiers can traumatize US citizens and wear down the US. Banzai Charges were counterproductive. 30 years later, the Viet Cong were champions of this concept.
IMO Kuribayashi is the only good Japanese army commander. Watch Letters from Iwo Jima. Sadly, there was one Kuribayashi, and a crowd of braindead dumbfucks like Masakazu Kawabe.
Just for info
Banzai charge -> Gjokusai "Glorious death"
Banzai charges were ordered when either the enemy had very little firepower, which was the case in the war in China, or when everything was lost and they wouldn't bear the shame of being taken as POWs.
Death as redemption and purification. Quintessentially Japanese mindset.

My great grandfather served in the IJN as a gunner on a destroyer and was alive to see both atomic bombs drop when he narrowly skipped being sunk with his crew because he got sick while on a leave. His destroyer went out a week later and was sunk, and as he was he was in the hospital he saw one of the bombs drop. My great uncle served in the Battle of Guadalcanal for the IJA and then my other part of my family which had already migrated to America before the war were in concentration camps. Crazy times those were….
Wait. Guadalcanal vet ? That place was hell
One thing I've realized is, the Emperors Troops all honored Bushido as no enemy boots set foot on Japanese soil (Homeland)
It was the government that chose to surrender as it was the best option for the people, the military did it's duty to the fullest. (Not saying the government didn't but it was still those who lived in the Emperors Military who were blamed)
May the souls of the fallen rest in peace and may the grip of shame & dishonor be cut away from them!

I can’t help but feel bad for some Japanese soldiers. They fought for what they believed in, and never gave up. Sort of like the samurai at shiroyama in a way
Tremendous respect to anyone brave enough to charge a marine corps machinegun position with a katana and a prayer.
I will show the respect to them for the idea of quite literally giving all you have on the battlefield, that's some intense dedication
But I don't respect for their actions of _how_ they had to arrive at such dedication
The cruelty of the Japanese during this period is often buried or dismissed outright in favor of the scorn being mostly focused on the Germans

This is so detailed you can literally hear Allied soldiers dying.
feeling history is the best way to truly learn it.
But they won at Saipan until fresh reinforcements arrived
Generally speaking it worked well against the Chinese, who didn't have automatic weapons or real training and would flee when forced into melee.
Against the US it was generally done to ensure soldiers were killed rather than captured.
For the Emperor! Not the God-Emperor! Just Emperor!
Fun fact: If you hear this much during a battlefield, you f*cked you big time.
