SW Saskatchewan: 10 Thrilling Places To Visit

- From Happyland to Happy Valley, you’ll see a ton of amazing places that are mostly unknown and have very little tourists. Most of these places are in remote areas of SW Saskatchewan and have little or no services. They make for amazing photography and hiking.
#saskatchewan #shaunavon #swiftcurrent
I moved to Shaunavon, SK from Banff in 2006 and have explored most of these places many times. It’s still amazing how many people who live in the province never heard and or never visited any of these spots.
SW Saskatchewan is also where you’ll find unique treasures such as the French town of Gravelbourg or the ghost towns along Highways #13 and #18.
SW Saskatchewan is one of the most thrilling to visit in Canada if you are a photographer, and the adventure begins only 4 hours east of Calgary or an hour south of Regina.
Did you know there is quicksand? Scorpions? Rattlesnakes? Places you can find dinosaur bones?
As a bonus, if you visit Old Man On His Back, in the extreme SW, you can see the mountains on a clear day!
Most people who drive through Saskatchewan take Highway #1. Next time, drive across using one of the southern highways and explore some of these places for yourself. You will be glad you did!

I`m from here and like the fact no one knows about much of the sights, I get to keep them for myself, there are even better places than this that a tourist has never seen.
Saskatchewan is a beautiful Providence in Canada, My mother and her elders were all born & raised on the Piapot Reserve outside of Regina SK, ever since when my great great uncle Chief Payepot (Piapot) signed the Peace Treaty #4 back in 1875 and I remember back in 1975 my grandfather used to ride me in his old Ford pick-up truck and when they have their Pow-Wows, he would sometimes take me on a tour of the park regions of Saskatchewan (Cypress Hill NP, Prince Albert NP, Grasslands NP, and Banff NP,) in that old Ford truck. And thank you for sharing this video, it brings back fond memories👍🏽
Thank you! I am glad you enjoyed it!
Amazing story and thanks for sharing. I'm from Washington State where I keep coming back to visit SK.
It’s good that people are aware of their family history, especially one as interesting as yours
You were a very fortunate person indeed.
Hi from Meadow Lake, Sask.
I encourage all people to go to Pow-wows learn about the culture and history of the 1st peoples. Many different 1st people each with their own knowledge and wisdom. Mostly Cree up here.
Because of this video, I just spent 10 days of travelling, camping, and hiking in SW Saskatchewan. I saw most of the places in the video. Thanks for this!
That is awesome! Hope you had a super great time!
I just love videos about Canada. We are so fortunate to live in this country. We are blessed in the sense that we have everything, from rain forests to deserts, grassland, mountains and lakes, but mostly the friendliness of our people. Love you Canada.
I'm from Washington State where I will be bicycling home from Flin Flon, MB across Saskatchewan which will be my 4th time. I love the wide open spaces, wind, sweet residents, grid road system and campgrounds in even the smallest towns. I've been to all most all you mention. Looking forward to riding through the boreal forest of the north country in Saskatchewan this summer on paved all weather roads equipped with shouldering for safety.
Oh wow that sounds like an amazing trip!!
That's awesome! I hope you have/had a great time. You have certainly seen more of Saskatchewan than I have, and I have lived here my entire life (I'm in my 60s now).
I salute your cycling stamina! Stay safe on our roads!
How did it go?
Howdy Jim Le Galley here,
Great bike holiday especially on the Hansen Lk. Rd. SK 106. The Cree 1st nation's folks were awesome. They stopped to visit, take pictures, give water. Some wanted to give e me their their lunch and even money. Super people and totally unexpected.
Had to end in cranbrook, bc due to heavy smoke from nearby st. Marie's fire.
I'm 65 finishing my 50th year of bicycle touring.
Canada is a beautiful country with many hidden gems, i love it.
And they say Saskatchewan is flat!!!! Love being born and raised here. Love your stuff, Chris. Absolutely gorgeous.
Thank you!
Yup. I annually oil up my Saskatchewan Seal Skin Bindings. Passing them down to the great grand-chidrin soon. 👍🇨🇦
Ha ha I remember that Super Dave
Saskatchewan is the hidden gem of Canada. I crossed our country from Vancouver Island to Montreal, an although the rockies are obviously beautiful, Saskatchewan have some kind of magic. The endless horizons are of such beauty. Thanks for sharing these treasures!
I agree :)
Did you check out Cypress Hills? It’s an oasis in the middle of a desert !
@@ryanduncan8470 No, I was twice in Saskatchewan, but only for a few days, on the road. I'd like to come back for at least a few weeks. I'll check this out for sure on google maps. One place that still haunts me is Kandahar, on the 16. It was like a mirage, the water and the horizon were hard to differenciate and it was a windy day. The waves in the fields and thoses on the water were just beautiful. All I would have had is a chair and something to drink and I could have spent many days there, just enjoying the view.
this video is so fake I live in Alberta this is nothing more than click bait
@@jefffisher1995 How is it fake? The places exist.
I visited all of Canada except for Saskatchewan, Manitoba, Yukon and NWT. Had no idea Saskatchewan had such great scenery!
Yeah I was surprised when I moved here

We are thinking of retiring to Saskatoon as living in Vancouver is impossible. We have hiked in the Alberta badlands and we loved it. I’m doing my research!
You'll love hiking valley of a 1000 Devils!
We are moving to SK from ON. Very excited! Best of luck!
Living in Vancouver's easy, as long as you're a multi-millionaire who doesn't mind a few meth-heads parked on your front door.
I escaped four years ago.
Saskatoon is the best city in Saskatchewan.
Saskatoon great, or even a near by town. Always something going on in stoon.
I used to travel for a Wholesale food Company outta Speedy Creek and my territory was from Leader in the North, Chaplin in the east, the US Border to the south and the Alberta border to the west. Throughout my years traveling that territory I had the greatest of all pleasures of visiting almost all the areas in your Video and had the privilage of living in both Willow Bunch and Swift Current. The southwest is by far the greatest natural history area in the whole province and I have traveled this province from La Ronge to the US border and from Manitoba to Alberta borders. But in Saskatchewan if you are willing to travel and go off the beaten path you will likely find a small chunk of anywhere else in Canada or very close to it except the High Mountains (Rockies) and an ocean beach. Saskatchewan is a HECK of a place to call HOME.
You got to see all the great areas!
I was raised on the family farm ten miles straight north of Willow Bunch, graduated high school from there in 1975.
Love this video, you did very well showcasing the beauty of SW SK! ❤
Thank you!
I LOVE the SW. Such a vast landscape.
I love it too!
Thanks for producing this video! Your photography is really stunning. We visited Cypress Hills and the Qu'Appelle valley two years ago and loved it. Looks like we missed a lot though, and need to plan a return trip!
Thank you!!! I hope you enjoy your next trip!
we did the Red Coat Trail both ways about 4 years ago, we came in from Alberta on road 502 I think , past Consul to Eastend , stopped at the Dinosaur museum ,to Shaunavon, then Hwy 13 to Cadilac then Val Marie and Grasslands Park. then to where Sitting Bull wintered then North via Weyburn ended up at Creelman for a night then Regina to start our northern loop. Now that our daughter is tranferred to Moose Jaw we will be back to see more of southern Sask. I really enjoy the southern Prairies. Being that we live in the Kootenays of BC, in mountains all the time is is nice to be in the big sky country. So many small towns and places to camp with no crowds from Alberta. We will be back a few times this summer for sure.
I am glad you enjoyed the trip! I love the fact htere are no crowds wherever you go in Saskatchewan!
I was born and raised in Saskatoon and I had no idea there were so many badlands areas and dunes. Wonderful stuff! I now live in Florida, so this was fun to learn more about my home province from so far away.
Lots of cool places to explore, and you are mostly the only person there in some of these spots.
. I for several years trucked to most of the uranium mines. When Uranium City was still happening. For six weeks or a little more every winter the Ice road was opened. Maybe twenty miles before arriving at the south shore of lake Athabasca. One enters the desert. It's huge sand dunes all the way to the lake. Almost straight up and down. Nothing but big sand dunes. Almost zero vegetation
From Saskatoon to Florida!!! That was a huge downward spiral.
Been to Florida, it's actually pretty nice. Going down the Florida back highways and through all the small back towns is super cool. The humidity in summer is unreal tho, but the cool lizards everywhere help make up for it haha.
My Dad is from Rockglen and have had the privilege of see a few of these spots. The people are great and very friendly. Night time skies are unreal.
I worked two summers on the Arnold Finnell ranch south of Ponteix back in the mid 60's. They were a great family to work for and I had the delight of working near where my father was raised on a small farm near Ponteix. Thanks for the tour
Have visited most of the sites on your list. Sk is just fabulous.
I agree!!!!
I was at Cypress Hills Provincial Park as a young child with my parents. Fort Walsh wasn't developed as it now is. This was back in the early 1960's. I can remember being amazed at the Spruce & Pine Trees growing there & how high the elevation was compared to Pense, Sk., on the Regina Plains.
cypress hill is my fave place to go camping because the fact that less mosquito, tons of activity , i just like the place , clean washroom, their trails is nice. highly recommended for those who like to drive a bit longer depending where you came from.
We camped in Cypress Hills last year and it was amazing experience. We live in Ontario and want to return soon.
The Badlands are definitely on my list of places to visit, possibly next summer. I want to see all these places. I had no idea there was a T-Rex museum in Saskatchewan.
That was some video! I had no idea, but all I've ever seen was from the Trans Canada Hwy., and it was a long time ago. Great skies, I remember. Saskatchewan is clearly a helluva lot more than just wheat and Burton Cummings.
Lots of these spots even people who live here don't know about
Just went to Saskatchewan this year by car, great place and people.
I visited the Badlands in 1973. My Mom was born in Rockglen so we toured around some of the sites. Your video was a great way to revisit the area. Thank you.
Thanks for watching!
Saskatchewan is a place of ancient times. It still retains tbe landscape just the way it was when the Mammoth and other Ice Age animals lived on the land. Absolutely unspoiled and ancient dinosaur bones quick sand. An unbelievable place !! ❤
I am amazed...looks like parts of Utah and Nebraska and the badlands in South Dakota.
Love this video
Thank you!!
thanks for sharing, so awesome
I have been to several of these places. I would love to see more of Sask. Cheers
The best part is, almost no people!
Awesome video thank you so much, The Willow bunch museum is a cool place I've been there many times very nice people there.
LOVE THE DEAD SEAS OF CANADA, SASKATCHEWAN. (watrous)
This was a nice little walk through my childhood, I lived on a little farm at the bottom of the Swift current cut banks back in 1980, we used to go to the Shaunavon Rodeo every year. we passed our time hanging out with the Hudderites (Hey Curly!) and campfires on lake Diefenbaker.
Glad you enjoyed it
Great video showcasing beautiful SW Sk.
Glad you enjoyed it
Amazing job on your video sir, great narration as well.
Wow! what a great watch! Thanks Chris!
Glad you enjoyed it!
I miss it there, been living in exile in the US for a few years now. Every day I miss it.
Those all look beautiful. So many amazing sights to be seen in the prairies. The most desolate places are some of the nicest. God bless.
Thanks for sharing. I've driven through Saskatchewan several times and I would never have used the word 'thrilling' to describe any of the parts I've seen.
We drove the southern rout this summer (2023) , on our way from On. to the Yukon .
It did not disappoint us , endless views and wild life .....
Excellent Video!!! I’m from Saskatchewan , originally.
Thanks for watching!
You did a really nice job on this video. We were wanting to spend a few days in Saskatchewan, and you gave us lots of ideas :-)
Hope you have a great trip!
Really enjoyed it, especially the abandoned building night shots.
Awesome, thank you!
Great video chris, visiting there next week, looking forward to it
Have a fun trip!
Wow ive knew some of these existed but never had the opportunity to actually go to them. Thanks for sharing, im hoping i can go to a few this year.
I hope you do!
Thanks for sharing! Incredible information and views!!!
Glad you enjoyed it!
My formative years were in Saskatchewan. So many fond memories. Thank you for your great work bringing out the beauty of this great province.
Thank you too!
Excellent video! Went to grasslands park last year.Coming from west coast it was such an enjoyable contrast.I highly recommend visiting. The people there are as welcoming as is the scenery.
Totally agree!
Chris - great video and very helpful to me. In September 2021 I spent a week by myself in Grasslands National Park - half in the West block and the other half in the East block. I really hope that I can come back to the park and the province for a longer period as I love Saskatchewan.
Wow, great imagery. A whole new perspective on Sask.
Hope you get to visit!
Interesting!
Amazing video! Perfectly done.
Thank you very much!
Always great vids!!
Glad you like them!
Great videos Chris thanks
Thanks for watching!
Wow, what an AWESOME VIDEO! Thank you very much for this. I have family in Canada and have been there at least a half dozen times, and love the landscape. However, this is just amazing!!! Happy 2024! Just found your channel. New Sub!
Glad you enjoyed it!
Beautyful photography and videography as a photographer my self looking for inspiration for visiting places you have definitely inspired me
Wow thank you! You will enjoy it, hope you have a great trip if you go!
Great job Chris. Although I was born and raised in Climax, there are many of these l that I haven’t seen but the Sandhills are amazing and Jones Peak is almost a spiritual experience!
Thank you!
Very well done video!!!
Thank you very much!
I would absolutely love to visit Saskatchewan one day. Especially grasslands NP.
NO crowds!
Love your ride Chris. I must say the music that you put in, they are legend. ❤❤
THank you!
Good job, I think I'll visit.😊
Thanks for all of the info! I’m planning on hiking to Valley of 1,000 Devils this weekend
Great time of year to do this!
@@attrell I made it back from completing it today! I survived the -3 or so night time low. Perfect time the avoid almost all bugs. I picked off about 5 ticks though. It was a great adventure overall and a unique landscape to visit
Great video!
Thank you!
Excellent video. You’re a great ambassador for SW Saskatchewan. I’ve visited some of the sites you showed but have yet to get to the Big Muddy and Castle Butte area. Or the East Block of Grasslands. Maybe this year! Cheers and Happy New Year!
You'll love it! And thank you!
Thanks Chris. Hammond homestead 5 miles north of Climax. Lots of wildlife and big sky.
Very well done video Chris. Lived on Saskatchewan for 15 years and thought I had found all the Gems but thanks to your video, I have more to explore. Sand dunes blew my mind and I had never heard of them in that location, which is an area I had hunted and fished in.
Glad you enjoyed it thank you!
Very nicely filmed. An excellent synopsis of a relatively untraveled region.
Many thanks!
WOW! Kool Saskatchewan.
Eat your heart out Toronto.
Omg, I want to go back there. Looks beautiful
Thank yoy for this video. Very lovely
Yes it is amazing! Thank you!
I drove through Saskatchewan in September, and thought it was absolutely beautiful. I have a plan to spend every October in Saskatchewan, every year, after I am retired; living in my RV, and exploring. I am also a bird hunter. Could you make a documentary about birding around Saskatchewan.
That sounds fun! Lots of birds especially around Cypress Hills.
Thank you for the video. It makes me homesick especially for some of the less tangible things such as watching storms roll in from many kilometres away. If you ever revise this video I'd suggest adding a few things. 1) You mention that snakes are not found in certain areas. You should specify rattlesnakes as there are other species of snakes in those areas. 2) Add more about First Nations background as you can find tipi rings in many of the areas you've shown. There is something special about realizing that you are standing in a tipi ring where people camped likely pre-contact. 3) Eastend is also where Pulitzer Prize winner, Wallace Stegner lived as a child and is the area he writes about in his novel Wolf Willow. 4) You mention, almost in passing, about how you can be alone in this area but that is worth its own bullet. Even in summer you can drive some roads and maybe not pass another car for an hour. Outside of the summer season, it can be much longer. While this means people should be more prepared, more importantly it is as much a part of the attraction to SW SK as the storms, skies and stars. It also true while hiking and is really amazing for people who like to hike solo. 5) Perspective. Most people visiting SW are amazed by the vistas and the broad scope of the land. Yet in reality, many of those places are not actually that distant. The lack of trees in many areas removes any sense of perspective. 6) You show some of the great empty houses and other buildings on the ghost town roads but was surprised there was no images from Robsart which actually is a town. Not very big anymore with only a few streets but you can actually drive past abandoned houses and stores. There are still a few residents but the vast majority of the buildings are now abandoned. While these might make good additions to your video, you have still created an excellent video that I will now be showing to many other people.
Thanks for the feedback!
I have indeed been to SW Saskatchewan. I drove hwy 13 from Weyburn into Alberta and beyond. I'm looking forward to travelling Hwy 18 next. I love old ghost towns and I'm just fascinated about the railway history across the country, particularly Alberta and Saskatchewan. I'm sure loving your vids.
Thank you! I hope you enjoy your trip!
Saskatchewan is beautiful.
I agree!
Great vid Chris. The only problem. I get home sick each time I watch one of your videos. I grew up on a farm close to Hazlet Saskatchewan.
Thank you! Hope you have a great trip!!
Thank you very much for the videos i my self just moved to Fairlight S.K and love being out of the big city of Ottawa. So many cool places to visit now lol
Hope you get to visit these spots!
I like the landmarks in saskatchewan. It's so beautiful. I would definitely like to get a dinosaur bone. they're prehistoric
Great video for many years I have wanted to travel this area seeing it will be done next Spring , I just have to plan my trip well as my car is an EV :) I will be going through you list of videos . Thank you.
I hope you have a great trip! No lineups at EV charging stations here.
‘Butt Castle’ and ‘70 miles of Butt’ sounds about right 👍
wow great I was from and raised in southern sask Gravelbourg area and elated to most of east end and shanavon thanks for showing my home town
Glad you enjoyed it
I had been in Rockglen , Assiniboia and Regina back in 2009 as a tourist. I have relatives there in South Sask.
I'm from Germany but never see more Living Skye as in Saskatchewan.
Hope you enjoyed your trip!
So cool seeing many towns I've been to in your videos, I visited Coronach for the first time this year with my father, its a nice little place, His family has a farm near there.
I like that town too!
Very nice video.
Thank you very much!
Very beautiful and informative. Want to visit mastery rocks at Cypress Hill in June. Thanks you
I have never been there!
I miss the soft billowing of the open wheat fields!
Hello, great vid
Hey, thanks
great video
Thanks!
Great vdo
Thank you!
Will do.
I worked with dept of hi ways ( road building) for a number of years and travelled from U City in the north to Govenlock in the SW and almost all points in between and there is a lot more to see in sask.
Awesome and cool. Thx Chris.
Have you ever heard of the Athabasca Sand Dunes. Its in Northern saskatchewan and is such a nice place to visit. My hometown is Uranium City sk and we boat over to the sand dunes during the summer
I wish I could get up there. Plane or boat to get there.
Been there several times. Flying floats out of La Ronge.
Vancouver has 'one' dark sky preserve location, so envious you have SO much more there! Would love to spend days exploring all of them, first tho! The wonderful natural beauty. 😍
If you like dark skies, you will LOVE SW Saskatchewan
B.C. would be so much cooler if there was less people. It's far to busy to really enjoy I found.
ok, as a photographer , you just confirmed that i need to see saskatchewan ! you made great shots !!!!
Yes! Thank you! You'll enjoy it!
Awesome video Chris! I know your sister Heather, as she was my sister Gwen's troopmate. Lived in Red Deer with her and her husband Steve. Also have been to Cypress Hills camping with a couple of friends when I was 16.
Very cool!
In SW Saskatchewan towns you missed Instow, Admiral Elevator ( still going; farmer owned,).Coop store that sold food , fuel, lots of farm repair parts like bearings, combine chain, etc. Creighton, Divide: I used to do Pest control in 9 Rural Municipalities in the SW !
I wished I had been able to west to Consul and Robsart
I have a ghost towns of SW Sask video on here that covers many of those towns
Old MAn On His Back is not the only place one can see mountains. In Consul area one can see, when air is clear, The Cherry Ridge mountains to the south east or the Bear Paw mountains in the south or the Sweet Grass mountains to the southwest, sometimes all three
Oh weird. I been there many times, never seen it. Next time I will try again
@@attrell It isn't often but when conditions are right. Last week I saw the BearPaws but not the Sweet Grass.
way awesome! thanks from medicine hat ab
Thank you!
I seen a cougar in Cypress Hills, only one I've ever seen
WOW! That must have been neat!
