I got this laptop solely for schoolwork via the cloud (i.e. google ecosystem), this is why I did not mind the 128GB at the time, little did I know that "other" storage eats up 30gb out of the box. I have tried video editing in 1080p in blender; render times are good and the scrubbing is OK, it could be better, whether that is the laptop's fault or blender's is up to debate. Also the keyboard feels good to use once you get used to it.
Overall, the laptop is a very powerful system for the money.

This was very informative, and not only for covering what a 2019 13" MBP is capable of. This also provides a window into what other small form factor laptops and tablets might be able to do. I'd be fine with offloading to a workstation for rendering and grading if I can assemble and cut 4K video on the road with something small and with great battery life.

Major Production companies prefer to use 'proxy's on a 4k timeline (premier pro) to bring down the resolution to create a butter smooth timeline which upon finishing can be unproxied to reveal its fullness in the export.

There is absolute no point to use 1:1 or 1:2 with resolution that MacBook pro has. You have video preview like 1:3 of screen which in resolution is about 850x 530. That's about fourth of 4k footage. Only if you use it with 4k monitor with full screen video preview you have some benefits.

Nice video! I have an insight on to the Resolve performance that might be of interest. I have a fully loaded 2016 15” MacBook Pro. Resolve stutters on a dissolve but if you wait a few seconds it runs perfectly. It looks like what happens is that it renders in the background automatically. I think that’s why your clip stuttered at first and suddenly worked perfectly a little later.

So easy, should I explore the Mac world? I manage a sports team and need to feed social media during the actual event. This on the hobby level, however is really in the border and some 'professional' look is needed. 'Dropped dead' just trying to color grade in DavinciR from go pro footage to what is immediately 'iphone film quality'! Grateful for your time and #staysafe as we need to flatten the curve at this point in time! Cheers

Good value is $2000 for an i7 with 16g and 1t for a 13” mbp. The reason they keep prices high is because you are not critical enough. For example look at smartphones. Hi Max! I'm torn between the macbook pro 2019 base model and the 2019 imac 4k base model.
I want to upgrade my 2011 21.5 imac. And my main use would be photo and video editing as a hobbyist/enthusiast.
I know the MacBook pro should be faster and overall more powerful, but having the tinny screen and just 2 thunderbolt ports kills me. Apart the thing that 128gb is very little and I'll have to be using a external ssd for almost everything. I thi k that just with the OS, lightroom, photoshop and da Vinci or fcp, the 128 ssd is already full.
I know the imac has a much slower hard drive, but I can always buy an external ssd and install the os there and boot everything from there and use the 1 Tera hard drive for storage only I guess.
Right now I have my 2011 imac booted from an ssd and it is a game changer.

If your just getting started but want the computer to last get a base 16” MacBook Pro. 👍 if you start with resolve just stick with it!

Max Yuryev that’s out of my budget, can u recommend the MacBook Pro 13 inch with 256 ssd.($1499) if I’m going to buy the Final Cut Pro?thanks for the advice

If that’s your budget then it should work ok in FCX (like I show in this video) but I would personally buy a used base 2018 for the same price if you can find one.

I'm currently editing through FCPX at the low-end MBP 13' with color grading and effects, the only issue is 8GB of RAM is totally not enough, looking forward to do some Premier work through it. Thanks for this Video and the info, totally suggest upgrade RAM to 16GB or more for editing. thanks

I'm seriously considering the same. I've got a 2013 15" MacBook Pro on my desk that's working fine. However, I could use this new 13" for travel, etc. and have it ready to go if my 2013 model poops out.

Hi Max. Great video. Please could you shed some light on the thunderbolt 3 bandwidth offered by this machine. Is there enough to have both an Egpu as well as a thunderbolt 3 dock like the caldigit ts3? Is each thunderbolt 3 port “full speed”?

If I'm only going to edit 1080p 120fps, will the base model do a good job? I have no choice but to purchase this model. I can't push it to 16GB RAM because it will take 40 to 60 days before it will be delivered should I order a custom config. Someone please confirm I am making a good decision.

regarding Resolve playback issue, i think it's a software issue. i experienced similar issues with previous version of Resolve on my 32gb RAM iMac. i am not sure what is going on. but seems Resolve needs to "warm up" a bit sometimes... sometimes if you change where the playback starts will make a difference, not really sure

I'm not an expert like Max and I would say yes. I have a 2011 iMac that I do basic video editing in 1080p and photo editing and it works fine outside of some period lag simply from me having it so long. So a 2019 laptop which shows a solid ability to edit 4k, I'm sure can handle those basic tasks. Hope this helps

For the $1799 model should I upgrade the ram to 16gb? Or upgrade the ssd to 512gb? I can only do one or the other.

No you should get the m1 MacBook Air it will do more that what you need and is cheaper than the m1 MacBook Pro. If you are on a smaller budget you can always look at refurbished models or just get the m1 Mac mini since it is the best and cheapest (cheapest depending what monitor, keyboard, and mouse you get)
