I remember on September 8, 1974 I was on a camping trip and heard on my tiny transistor radio that Ford pardoned Nixon.
I was a timber stand improvement contractor, camping on the job. Partner and I went to town ,bought two beers we couldn't afford to witness Nixon resign. Bar tender said "SOB" we had a comrade. "Using them words nobody can understand"

I believe the founders expected that when a candidate wins the election but can't pass a preemployment screening, we go back and do the election again, with another. Nixon's Vice President was Spiro Agnew, who stepped down just in the nick of time for Ford to become vice president and then when Nixon stepped down Ford became president ( how convenient)! And then went on to pardon Nixon . It seemed a little shady at the time like that game of three card Monte. Look for Trump to bring in a vice president who has said they are willing to Pardon him.

It is such a pity that the unlawful exercise of class privilege let Nixon off the hook for his crimes. His famous use of 'dirty tricks' might well have been at least somewhat mitigated, whereas since then we have seen such things become an evermore critical element of our national politics.

To add to your points indicating that Trump knew that his actions while president were not above the law, this is what Rex Tillerson, said: “The president would say, ‘Well, here’s what I want to do, and here’s how I want to do it,’ and I would have to say to him, ‘Well, Mr. President, … you can’t do it that way. It violates the law. It violates treaty.’ He got really frustrated when we would have those conversations.”
So Trump KNEW that some/many of the things he wanted to do were illegal, and he is lying, as usual, when he claims that the president is above the law!

Although that is just one of many problems with the system the US president is elected, so I can not be sure, that the distortion of ballotweight is the main issue he has with that system.
